Sean Michael Daley (born September 7, 1972), better known by his stage name Slug founded Atmosphere with Derek Turner (Spawn). Turner has since left and Anthony Davis (Ant) produces Atmosphere with Slug. In 1995, Slug, in collaboration with Anthony Davis, Musab Saad, and Brent Sayers founded the Minneapolis based independent hip hop record label Rhymesayers Entertainment. The son of Valerie and Craig Daley, Slug's nickname comes from his father's; his dad was known to his friends as "Sluggo" and thus they began to call Sean "little Sluggo," which he shortened to "Slug". Before fully establishing himself as an official artist, Daley spent much time making music with fellow Minnesota rapper Nic Lehnertz. The two worked on projects together, and Daley recognizes Lehnertz as a contributing factor to his success. Lehnertz quit rapping after high school, while Daley went on to pursue a professional career. In Atmosphere's early years, Slug DJ'd behind the scenes and let Spawn handle lyrics. The group eventually formed a strong relationship with Ant (Anthony Davis) and began collaborating on music. Along with solo MC Musab (then Beyond), and groups Black hole, Phull Surkle, and the Abstract Pack they formed the mid-1990s crew Headshots, with Slug appearing on the underground tape series HeadShots (1-7). A prominent theme in Slug's lyrics is his allegorical usage of women, especially in his earlier work. A notable use of women by Slug is in the song "Woman with the Tattooed Hands", which Slug has said is "a metaphor for that same stuff that everybody has already made songs about". Further uses come in the form of the song "Abusing of the Rib" from Headshots: SE7EN: it has been said that the "lover" that Slug speaks of is actually an allegory for hip-hop. A character Slug refers to as "Lucy", who has been purported to symbolize a range of different entities, is the most notable of these allegories. In earlier Atmosphere songs, it is believed that Slug used Lucy as a means of writing about ex-girlfriends. Lucy became so prominent that Atmosphere's 2001 album bore her name, Lucy Ford: The Atmosphere EPs, with the record itself concentrating fairly heavily on women and relationships, in songs such as "Don't Ever Fucking Question That" and "Mama Had A Baby And His Head Popped Off". Slug himself has since said of Lucy that he originally believed "her" to be a representation of the dichotomy between himself and women. He acknowledges now that Lucy became a demonization ("Lucy Ford" being a play on words for Lucifer) of himself and his dependency on alcohol, drugs, sex and validation. Slug raps in an introspective style, as seen on the song "Little Man", in which he confronts the complaints that people have about him by looking at his relationship with his father and son. This introspective style has become less prevalent as of Atmosphere's 2008 album When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold in which Slug navigates through other people's lives. Slug has stated that in and around the year of 2005, he began to move in a new direction lyrically as he became more aware of the effect his lyrics would have on kids, especially his own son who was becoming a teenager at the time. Because you read this much God loves you and because of that here's the answer to the age old question, Lucy was "Rita Puskas" Slugs ex. - Hudba

Maria Luiza Popescu i am going to quote this in a link for my facebook page!!
Go for it! :)
this
same here, i'm all ears like it's a sermon and other times he's the perfect voice for me too
Maria Luiza Popescu I am so with you on that! He came into my life before I even knew what was missing. He invokes thoughts and emotions that explain my exact situation or feeling at that moment. It is synchronicity in action!
i got this album from my brothers friend as a burned copy with no name 10 years ago. listened to it over and over again until i lost it 4 years ago, never knowing who it was. i just stumbled on this by chance. and after the hour was up, wondered why i never tried to find out who made one of my favorite most inspirational pieces of music. i was the only one of my circle that loves hip hop, so no love lost from the passengers in my car where this was constant on repeat. game over, boys. it's baaaaaack.
I learned about them in 09 by a lesbian lady named tinder but I latched on right away why the wait
@@derekwinters6757 I learned about them by a gay man named grinder 😂
@@gregc7699I learned about them by a transsexual named bumble
Ur bros friend must've really cared about u cos an atmosphere album is a very special gift 🎁 😊
Sevens Travels is a better album IMO.
When I was 17 I had just started listening to hip hop. I'd been obsessed with Operation: Doomsday and I heard a bit of Del tha Funkee Homosapien, but I had no idea how far this would take me. I specifically remember buying Lucy Ford with a buddy, throwing it in my CD player, and driving through the country. After hearing the first track I told him "sorry, this isn't hip hop". Two hours later we were replaying the album for a second time, high as shit and wondering how we'd never heard of Atmosphere before.
yoo tairy hesticles, love dem uploads dude
Eric Gidcumb It's a shame we aren't learned by the media to dig to find treasure. The first layer is always mud, but without digging it's the only thing we can appreciate. Because we don't know better.
When I was 15, I heard Atmosphere- Vampires on a Winamp radio station. Only a coincidence brought me in contact with this hidden world. It some of the things in my life that had so much impact of my way of thinking.
Word. That late 90's, early 2000 period of underground hiphop was truly the music's second golden era. Slug is EASILY a top 10 emcee of all-time.
***** I know that now...I was a silly teenager when I made thay statement.
A guy in high school gave me a copy of "First Born" and then told me to try and find some Atmosphere and Aesop Rock to listen to. I listened to that Eyedea & Abilities album, then downloaded Atmosphere songs off of Kazaa. I was about 17. 11 years later, and here I am. I've found a lot of good artists through Tairy Hesticles' CZcams channel, too.
25:45 if i was santa clause is the most underrated atmosphere song. easily my favorite song.

Hey, you seem to have a LEGENDARY amount of Atmosphere knowledge... There's a song I can't find but sometimes I can vaguely remember part of, "What were you looking for? Did you know which one that you want? What were you looking for? Did you know which one that you want?". I think I remember the song being about digging through crates of records to find the exact sounds and samples he was looking for... All the more ironic that the song escapes me.
"If I was Santa Claus" hits hard.
My car is like my own personal universe. Favorite Slug song of all time.
+Brad Greenwald at a show a few years back he changed it to $40 bucks.
Chad Freund lol. I just put 38 to fill my tank
in my galaxy aint no room for earth!
Try a hundy, thanks asshoe Joe (let’s go Brandon)
Omg it's like double that now :(
Oh man, the opening track...
The music is so good ant knows how to sample and mix.. I wish I could see ants collection hang with him and have him show me some solid gold tracks he gets his inspiration from
I GOT A LOT TO TEACH, BUT EVEN MORE TO LEARN.
What do you know, still learning to crawl?! Writing catchy Oneliners on a bathroom stall. I could go on for days
Can't even believe it's been 5years since anyone comments... Been a couple since I've heard it from end 2end so it's an absolute treasure~ getting better with time NO DOUBTS
Atmosphere is a name you can bring up when asked to recommend a quality hip-hop artist.
Atmosphere is a sound you can call upon to ease the stress.
Atmosphere is relatable.
Atmosphere is REAL.
Atmosphere is a homie, fasho =]
Atmosphere is Sean Daley and Anthony Davis!
@@jimmccahon5648 truth, though I think they might've added a couple people for shows on tour. The person is likely not understanding the separation between rapper and beats/instruments (they do play backing live).
BTW, @jordonsturtevant2896, the person rapping is also known as Slug. That's why you'll hear a million references to it. Example: "I stepped on the stage, "Who is it?"
My name's Slug, I've come to kill a couple minutes
It's all about getting down, with the get down
Atmosphere, it's just a ten letter word" - God Loves Ugly, from God Loves Ugly by Atmosphere, also regarded as one of the most widely known Atmosphere songs. Slug did form Rhymesayers, which is what this is all released through. Look into the whole label. There's not a single miss.
This album raised a bunch of us and we're still alive! LOL
still my fave Atmosphere album what a masterpiece from the beginning to the end...wow
Such an epic album. Guns n Cigs was the first TRUE hip hop song I was ever introduced to and I've been a head ever since. Thanks for a great upload.
according to kids, i'm old....but they're kids, so they're unenlightened as of yet. notice how i didn't say dumb? i'm 41. lived through the golden age of hip-hop as a young man. this album is one of l.p.'s i mention when i have to explain to the other grown-ups that hip-hop is not wiz khalifa, flo-rida, drake, nikki minaj, etc...
WTF is Wiz Khalifa...Seriously. Shit.
exactly, its obviously lil wayne
Who let the dogs out?!?! Am I right?
Thank you for this comment
I'm 17, I got into this music at 13-14.
Atmosphere and Eyedea made me appreciate this music fully.
I'm a year late but I have to disagree because my peers seem pretty content with post Malone and little uzi vert or whatever the fuck; drake, Kanye west, etc.
It's been a minute since I heard this track...! Oooooo the memories.... This takes me back to high school chilling in the back yard drinking a cool one and relaxing! What happened to those days lol
2018 Lucy Ford still LIIIIIT
10-21-23 still bumpin it
Sometimes I feel as though he's talking about my life. Probably one of the only rappers that anyone can relate to. Truth hurts.
The Mehggsigen I couldnt have said it better
Amen to that.
The Mehggsigen and don't you love the way that you can relate to everything your favorite rapper has to say about your hatred?
You couldn't be more wrong with "Probably one of the only rappers that anyone can relate to." Don't shun rap because you haven't done the research
Try MF DOOM and really listen
this album's fucking classic. the feeeeeeels
it's actually a compilation that collects the previously released EPs
Along with Dark Side of the Moon, the Lucy Ford EP is my favorite album of all time. Slug is amazing and sees into the existential dilemmas of the millenium.
Couldn't be better stated man. Crazy to put em there with Floyd, but they're my favorite band too and I understand what you're saying. Lucy Ford is easily top 10 albums if not top 5
God Loves Ugly is my favorite but this one also fire 🤝

AGREED
Best underground album imo
there is no reason for anyone to thumbs down this. absolutely none.
This is high school. I miss Minneapolis.
I just started getting into Atmosphere about 2 months ago and I am blown away at just how smart and intelligent his raps are. Rap is not my favorite genre but this guy is opening my mind to new area's that are very cool. I am seriously impressed by Slug and already know several of his songs word for word. I will be listening to him for the rest of my life and lucky for me there's so many albums out that I can listen to Atmosphere for days and not hear the same song twice.
This album saved my life when my brother took two bullet to the chest. 😑😑😑😑when I hear this album I hear it in my brothers voice r.I.p lungs 👊👊👊.keep it up slug and ant you two are very special

Awesome project from Atmosphere!!
always loved this one since I heard it
Damn tight thanks G, Happyhop
This brings it back... I was bumping this back in 2001 such a dope album "Bigger Than Guns, Bigger Than Cigarettes"
I've listened to Atmos for over a dozen years, and to Ani DiFranco much, much longer than that...and I just now noticed something that makes me wonder if Sluggo wasn't referencing Ani's work directly. In "Like Today", he mentions "Ann Landers to Ani DiFranco to Orphan Annie, I love all women, but most of them just can't stand me...maybe she noticed that you was diggin' in yo' nose...". Ani has a 1993 song called "Pick Yer Nose". For those who may not be a fan, look it up anyway, it's hilarious and a great philosophy on life. And, would be the kind of ironic statement Slug uses plenty of in his work...a subtle self-depricating commentary that points to women (or at least Ani) not being able to stand him for bigger reasons than him picking his nose, as the opening lyric to her song is, "How come I can pick my ears but not my nose?/Who made up that rule, anyway?". I may just be overthinking things, but Slug does stuff like that all the time. I love still finding new ways to think about his lyrics after so long!
Love them both and I've caught that too... I absolutely think it was on purpose imo
Caught that aswell, also has subtle salutes to Mac Dre and many others. Brilliant music. Shit is modern art
I heard this in 2000 but I was young and then I heard it five years later along with other atmosphere classics honestly underground hip hop opens up your mind I still listen to it today
still one of my favorites
never gets old
Masterpiece, major Slick Rick vibes
my favorite album!!
Thank you. Someone who still cares.
Lying for love doesn't work forever......I love not being in love because I can have hobbies.....
The "L" stands for logic.
careful my friend, loneliness cuts deep.
beeing alone and beeing lonely are two different versions

Such a classic.
