    No. Yid is NOT offensive.
    I'm Jewish and I'm a Spurs fan. We call ourselves Yids to reclaim the word. It's a badge of recognition and honour, it's our label for ourselves and Jew and non-Jew Spurs fans use it with pride.
    If some are offended then I'm glad we live in a country where we CAN offend each other.
    But I will not accept real racists preventing me using a word just because they use it in a derogatory manner. I have the right to call myself what I want - how dare anyone stop that.

    The word 'yid' is not a racist word but some football fans do use it in a derogative term. Spurs fans don't. Spurs fans have always been called 'yids' by opposing fans and in a derogative way. So just like homosexuals did with the word 'queer', we have turned it around and went with it so it would no longer offend the jewish fans of Spurs. It is in no way shape or form, chanted by Spurs fans, as being anti-semetic. But fans such as Chelsea, West Ham, and Leeds fans are being anti-semetic when abusing our fans with it. Spurs fans call each other it and the players to

    • @TheDoctorOfGaming
      @TheDoctorOfGaming Před 5 lety

      yid, when used in the context of yiddish language, is not offensive when spoken by Jews, it's actually pronounced "deed". When pronounced by non-jews it becomes offensive, especially people who have no idea what it means/where it comes from or how to say it. The truth is Arsenal have more Jewish fans than tottenham, tottenham are not a jewish inclusive club and so the very use of the word becomes offensive. Spurs claiming a term out of jest and using it as their identity when the majority of fans are NON-JEWS is cultural appropriation and by definition anti-semitic.

    • @schmatever
      @schmatever Před 5 lety

      Which is basically a really questionable justification considering how small the actual percentage of Jewish fans there are at Tottenham... at least 5%. So basically non-Jews are reclaiming a word that never belonged to them in the first place.

    if Spurs use the word - even as a badge of pride - that makes it acceptable for other sides to use it, often as an insult. the word isn't acceptable in any sense. there's a lack of understanding over what it means and how threatening it can sound. why do we insist on using it?

    The truth is that north London's Jewish Tottenham fans have become immune to hearing Yid as an insult by non-Jews because they have become ghettoised and forced to do so. I know this, I grew up in north London and remember the unbridled hatred from some non-Jews towards Jews at school and on the street. I am a Spurs supporter and not Jewish. I find the chanting of 'yiddos' at the ground offensive. Not only that, it implies all Spurs supporters are Jewish and we are not. It is strange how these myths grow. All my friends and work colleagues that support Arsenal are Jewish and yet they are not considered a Jewish club! My belief is there are as many Jewish Arsenal supporters as there are Spurs. This is simply because most Jewish communities are in north London.

    I'm Jewish and Spursish and am more than happy to identify myself as a Yiddo. FA - Please stop sticking your nose in where it's not necessary. The term 'Yiddo' (oops, said it again! OH NOOOO!) was adopted BY Spurs fans themselves to defuse the anti-Jewish connotation behind the original insult. So where's the problem!!?

    However, by now, Tottenham is connected with the jewish heritage only by remnants of historical buildings and a couple of older fans who don't usually visit the games themselves.. and the yiddo-chants. It's become a pretext for starting fights and preserving a violant atmosphere ...it should stop because it has nothing to do with judaism, in fact brings it into disrepute.

    If you were to use the logic used in this video - the word used to describe the race is used to defame the race - to ban "Yid" then ask yourself how that logic applies to this comment (use google translate).
    As I read it, the logical conclusion is that you would ban the word "Jew".

    The most common pejorative for Jews is...get this...Jew! Or Jude in other languages. Any use of the J word makes you an anti-semite by the logic in this video. Shortening words does not make them suddenly offensive, people using words in an offensive context is what makes them offensive.

    • @schmatever

      Yes it is context but the context of Jew and Yid are not the same. Also, especially if you are Jewish and grew up in North London listening to the bile of racism like I had to during the 70s and 80s. Thank God, things are changing now. Thank God we are actually discussing it and non-Jews in this video are supporting us Jews that are fed up hearing this term.

    Supadupaguy81, the fact that you have decided to call yourselves "Yids" may not be offensive to you, but is to other people. Have some thought for others rather than defending what is a racist insult just because you think that it's ironic. It's not just about what you want to be called, but how others will be affected by it. I know you see this as meddling, but Holocaust survivors or their relations will be offended, and rightly so, by this peurile name calling.

    "back in the 30s and 40s jewish people all over europe were being rounded up and killed. people called them yids"
    are you saying he´s reffering to england?
    the word "yid" wasn´t being used by nazis. yude - that´s how it´s pronounced in german and also slavic languages have totally differently pronounciation. Therefore there is no 2WW connotation if you chant yids yids. it can be a neo-nazi english thing if certain people mean it that way.

      Nazis did insult Jews though, duh... obviously..... using hateful anti-semitic terms so its the same thing. The term Yid is considered to be and used as a racial epithet. It was used against Jews in London during the 70s, 80s especially when I was growing up and its as ugly and nasty as any other ethnicity having to suffer hearing "Nigger" or "Paki". Its exactly the same.
