DA NANG STREET FOOD WITH A LOCAL

  • In todays video I explore Da Nang street food with a local. I met dee when I finally decided to get a haircut. Dee owns his own salon/barber shop and while we were talking I noticed his impeccable English. As we chatted I learned he is extremely passionate about the local food scene and asked hime if he wanted to join me on a Da Nang street food journey. He obliged and here we go.
    First stop was Hờn Fishcake Noodle Soup for Bún chả cá. A savoury broth with delectable fish cakes and pork set with noddles. A beautiful introduction to central Vietnam cuisine. maps.app.goo.gl/WCxjrFGnEbaHQ...
    Next up, we headed to Bún mắm Ngọc for their Bún mắm nêm. A dry noodle dish with your choice of protein and the super pungent mắm nêm as well as papaya, fresh herbs and cashew oil. Despite it's heavy aroma, the flavour of mắm nêm is other worldy delicious.
    maps.app.goo.gl/UqFJS5kd6yzNn...
    After being blown away with mắm nêm why stop at just one dish with it? So we head to Quán Đại Lộc for Bánh Tráng Trộn Thịt Heo. Here you make your own delicious pork rolls with pork, herbs, sour mango, unripe banana, rice noodels and of course your rice paper. Dip into the mind blowing mắm nêm and enjoy. Theses delectable rolls are to die for.
    maps.app.goo.gl/NYbSfbNrXcgcJ...
    Still not willing to stop on the mắm nêm we head to Quán Ly for cá đuối nướng & bèo dạng. Or grilled stingray and morning glories. The stingray is slightly chewy yet flaky at the same time with a very subtle seafood flavour. We make rice paper wraps again and dip again into the mắm nêm. We also got a fish sauce and chili dip but prefer the mắm nêm.
    maps.app.goo.gl/jYvkh2c5gmLHh...
    Our final stop I have no idea where it is or what is was called. Sorry, I was super full by the point. Here I go after the Da Nang style of eating Trứng vịt lộn or balut. Balut once again being a fertilized duck egg with the embryo still inside.
    Dee is an amazing young man so if you need your haircut when you are in Da Nang pay Dee a visit.

    If you like mam that much, then when you get to Hanoi, try bun dau mam tom. Max loves that dish and I think Sonny does, too. Get the platter that comes with the blood sausage because I've seen some without and blood sausage in Vietnam is delicious because of the herbs used in it. It's the only blood product I'd eat (I usually eat it in chao/congee, though, which is called chao long as it often comes with organ meats).

    Don't forget to try all the seafood while you are in Da Nang. They have amazing seafood there. Also try nem nuong as it's from Nha Trang so it should be popular there since Da Nang is in Central Vietnam. Banh xeo also came from that area and is different than how it's made in HCMC. Hunt down some banh khot, too. Tons of amazing food came from that area and Hue.

    • @PureDetour
      @PureDetour  Před 4 měsíci

      Running out of time here quickly so I don't think I will get to do any more seafood on camera. Had Bahn Khot in Hoi An over the weekend while filming there for an upcoming video. Was hard to find (for me anyway) because they don't call it bahn khot as my research told me it was called also. They call it bahn can trung cut..

    • @doodahgurlie
      @doodahgurlie Před 4 měsíci

      @@PureDetour Banh canh trung cut is a slightly different version of it. It has egg in it vs seafood or ground pork filling. It's also whiter in color vs the more golden fried version of banh khot. Maybe it's easier to find in places like Vung Tau and such.

    • @PureDetour
      @PureDetour  Před 4 měsíci

      Fair enough. I was specifically looking for the quail egg version (didn't know another existed) and had read that Banh Khot was the egg version. This is all so confusing. I'm going to have to spend a lot more than 90 days in country to start to understand it all lol

    Not sweet potatoes but pumpkins.In a bowl of fish noodle soup, there is usually pumpkin, cabbage, dried bamboo shoots, and tomatoes next to sliced fish or fish cakes with fish soup and spices, plus a plate of vegetables.

      You may want to re think that, Sadohr. This is 10x more pungent than buro for instance. the one I had in Saigon was much more mellow and resembled bagoong more than a fermented fish paste. the ones here in central Vietnam makes you want to hurl when you smell it lol

    that mắm nêm looks like our bagoong monamon or fish bagoong (as opposed to shrimp). good ones are made in Pangasinan. people eat it with boiled okra/veggies sometimes with calamansi. can't stand the smell so i refuse to eat it unless it's sauteed and cooked in a dish (eg pinakbet or dinengdeng)

      buro (preserved, fermented, or pickled) is usually rice but there's also burong mangga (mango), burong hipon (shrimp), burong isda (fish), mustasa (mustard greens), etc. It's only fermented for a few days and then needs refrigeration whereas bagoong is fermented for a few months (the clear liquid on top is patis aka nam pla) and the stinky residue at the bottom is bagoong@@PureDetour
