Draining A Swamp

  • Draining a swampy area down to dig a 150' long ditch for another contractor to install a french drain. A friend of mine did the site work on this building a few years back and nothing was done with this area. It hadn't really been an issue until this year with all the rain. I was just hired to dig the ditch and he was going to finish the drain and clean it up with his Case loader. They didn't feel the need to put fabric in the ditch just some pipes and clean rock. I also found out I need to come up with some new mounting areas for the camera lol! Thanks for watching! #EliteEarthworks #Takeuchi #TB260

    The best why I figured how to to under ground drainage system is a.
    perforated pipe surrounded with the popcorn with a sock, this is a 3 in one system.
    Is illuminates time,labor, & mess.
    In most cases it’s cheaper or if not the same price as if you were to do rock with vapor barrier. (Also love your videos👍👍, just bought a th260 as well I love it

    Quick tip, go to farthest side, lay bucket flat, trak towards low spot , keeping slight down pressure, you leave a debris free glass smooth bottom for drainage.

    I'm so glad you saved this to post - draining swamps are always fun! To make a "conclusion" I suppose you could drive by and do a quick walk-around, but this was actually pretty interesting just with what you showed. It doesn't look like it probably smelled to good in there, but kudos for avoiding an actual sewer so far! With every dip, you get better with that grading bucket. Good job.

    Damn spoil pile always in the way, lol! I use the heal of my bucket when trying to get water to move, don't have to worry about holding grade with the cutting edge so much and leaves that slick finish. Congrats on the new machine too. It took me a bit to get used to using a grading bucket, like anything else time will get you there. Might want to think about making ground contact after your bucket change, cant always rely on that button. I know a man personally that had a bucket drop off a big machine on the back of his leg in a ditch, lucky to be alive. Another not too long ago was not as lucky unfortunately.

      Hey I love the equipment but I'm not sure about the legality of playing with retention pond attached to a gas station. Couple questions, first off was the county or State Environmental agency contacted about the correction of the water flow. Run off from gas stations or adjacent parking to a gas station normally has to be filtered was some sort of a substrate and annually cleaned and usually burned off. That is why over half of the gasoline stations in your state have built in incinerators or separation tanks that have the runoff collected in.
      I am sure you're helping a buddy out here by using out your new equipment but, you have to be aware of the regulations for petroleum stations.
      I've seen a few or your videos where I'm sure OSHA would have had a field day with you digging without side walls or providing the proper side grade. Those rules were put in to protect your safety so you can go home to your family at night. Be careful using the mini equipment on major jobs for the Savings of other people's money.

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  Před 5 lety +1

      Bill Mcdonald this wasn’t a retention pond it was just a low spot that was never addressed when they built the KFC. The gas station does have its own retention under the parking and an incinerator. It doesn’t run to this area. Yes I just did the digging for the friend of mine, he had engineered prints of the digging the ditch like we did. He just put two 4” pipes in instead of one 8” like the prints showed I’m guessing it was cheaper. I’m sure OSHA would have a field with a lot of what I run into. I would say I’m 90% of my videos I just do the digging for someone. If these were my jobs you can beat I would have a trench box or bench them back more than what I do for these others. I do a lot of work for cheap pushy contractors and it’s annoying as all get out. I am looking for a trench box because now the city has to be on site for any main you tap. Which is great because you will have to have a box. Much better chance someone won’t die that way. Thanks again for the concern

    Brandon....really like watching your vids. Question for you but first quick background. I am a small time landscaper. Looking to do bigger jobs. I have skidsteer, dump trailers, etc. I am looking at a 2013 Tak TB138. It has 1900 hours. Looks to be well taken care of. Can you tell me what I should be looking for before buying? Also, can I add a quick coupler to it? It's manual connect with pins and it would be nice to switch out buckets from inside cab. Also, do you use a 6 way blade much and should I look for a machine with that or is a straight blade fine for most applications? Thank you.

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  Před 4 lety +1

      Thank you! Make sure all the pins and bushings look good and there is not a ton of play in them. Check the boom for any cracks especially around where the thumb cylinder is welded on. Check the undercarriage sprockets and rollers. Also for any leaks or wet areas. Make sure you can lift the machine by pushing the bucket down tells you how strong the pump is. Yes you can add an aftermarket quick coupler, my new one has a Werk Brau hydraulic coupler on it. The angle blade is handy but not necessary so I wouldn’t sweat that. Best of luck with the purchase too! 👍🏻

    I kind of have some swampy areas on my property instead of having swamps. I kind of want to turn them into large ditches to regain some land. Do you think this is possible to accomplish?

    • @eliteearthworksllc
      @eliteearthworksllc  Před 4 lety

      You should be able too if you can get them to drain off and dry a bit

    • @neolightproductions
      @neolightproductions Před 4 lety +1

      Elite Earthworks LLC well I don’t think I could get them to drain completely. They’d just have to be turning into ditches instead of swamps. What it is, is a big pond but the back of it is open so then the swampy areas can drain into it. However whenever it’s high... it makes the swampy areas fill back up. So instead of swampy areas I want them to be ditches instead. It’ll still be able to expand and contract but into ditches instead of swamps. Biggest fear is getting equipment stuck back where I’d need them.

    Wrong application for a french drain!
    Drop inlet boxes, fill and grade to the boxes that you install:)
