  • The heat is on, and its not even summer yet! We're about to leave for another BusBash and I want to make sure the engine stays super cool, so I'm installing another of Andrigs fancy gizmos. These are fixed cooling flaps that direct the air to exactly the right spots for maximum cooling. With the super fan and all the work we did to the tins we should be able to handle the heat with no problems!

    I have a Baja Bug. I mounted a 10” fan over the fan shroud, blowing fresh air into the fan intake and over the generator/ alternator. Cooling it down and providing plenty of un-preheated air to the engine. This has worked well for the long desert hwy drives and long hill climbs hwy.

    • @OldVolksTV
      @OldVolksTV  Před 2 lety +2

      That's not a bad idea for a Baja! I've seen people do that with a small oil cooler, and that's bad news. But just a fan seems like it would help!

    That fan replicates the Corvair fan I think. IDK if the flaps are really going to do anything only if you have an original fan shroud with all the air directors in there. Probably would have made up a water vapor injector with compressor tank and nozzles around the fan intake. I may do that for my truck.

    • @OldVolksTV
      @OldVolksTV  Před 2 lety

      The shroud is actually a German one, but it's had lots of welding and bondo. The flaps reduce the "swirl" of the air so it moves past the fins easier.

    Another mod I found works for me. I blew a valve cover cork gasket on a hot desert hwy. The engine needed to breath.. So I removed the oil filler cap and with a hose clamp and N-95 mask 😷 covered the oil fill hole. This gave a lot of extra heat breathing for the engine. Since then The engine runs cooler and I have not blown valve gaskets.

    • @OldVolksTV
      @OldVolksTV  Před 2 lety +1

      Interesting. I wouldn't recommend too many miles with that cap off, even with the mask. Vented valve covers are easy enough to find or even make. That way you keep all the dust out of the oil.

    • @Mikefngarage
      @Mikefngarage Před 2 lety +2

      good road fix. breather kit would be the best answer. you need one if you have a bigger engine and driving it a bit faster on the freeway. all those RPM build up crank case pressure. Also best to redo the gearing on the car or bus. so the engine is not revving so high this will stop those things from happening. too.

      I just got back from a trip. 3 hours of hiway driving, fully loaded for camping and pulling a camp trailer, with 85° temps. The head tin over #3 was 165° and the block was 180° . The fan makes some noise but it quiets down while cruising around 55mph. Overall I'm very happy. From what I hear he's making a new version that looks like a stock fan and is even more efficient. Worth every penny.

  • @crackpotts5347
    @crackpotts5347 Před 2 lety

    Fellas, I got to see these in person. If you don't have the stock flaps, you must have something to direct the air. I can't possibly explain the effects of not having, over having, but, it has to do with the Lumiere effect. Wind is chaotic and must be directed to be effective. Directed air has a large amount of force when focused, however, once it leaves the machine, it only has a small amount of focus but looses an enormous amount of energy. I can imagine that there are a lot of small eddies inside the shroud next to the inner and outer surfaces of the fan shroud which causes loss of energy. Bla bla bla, directed to be effective!

      @OldVolksTV  Před 2 lety +1

      Professor Tony!

    • @andrigtmiller
      @andrigtmiller Před 2 lety +2

      I have done tons of testing of the fan and fan shrouds, and what is interesting is how the fan itself actually causes the air to swirl inside the shroud. The air directional vanes in the shroud are complex, and what you see is that the 3/4 cylinder side has a lot of vanes in it to direct the air to that side, where there are only a couple on the 1/2 side, and that is because the swirl of the air is in the direction the fan turns, so the air wants to mostly exit on the 1/2 cylinder side. That's why I chuckle a bit whenever I see those center mount fan shrouds with no air directional vanes. They certainly won't cool both sides of the engine properly.

    • @OldVolksTV
      @OldVolksTV  Před rokem

      A stock fan will work fine. If you get the RPMS too high they'll slip and cool less, and if you use a tensioner on the belt it won't slip. If it doesn't slip, it'll fly apart. That's why Berg started welding them. If you use a tensioner AND turn high RPMs you absolutely MUST run a welded fan. Or one of Andrigs fans, since they're lightweight and one piece they Han take the abuse.

    • @andrigtmiller
      @andrigtmiller Před 2 lety

      The flaps direct the air. The air flow coming down from is actually swirling somewhat, so that final flaps makes sure the air is directed where it does the most good. This was documented by Gene Berg many years ago with the thermostatically controlled flaps that came from VW. A lot of people get the used flaps, and either wire them open, or spot weld them so they stay open, but the original flaps are getting hard to come by.
