    Border View Farms is a mid-sized family farm that sits on the Ohio-Michigan border. My name is Nathan. I make and edit all of the videos posted here. I farm with my dad, Mark and uncle, Phil. Our part-time employee, Brock, also helps with the filming. 1980 was our first year in Waldron where our main farm is now. Since then we have grown the operation from just a couple hundred acres to over 3,000. Watch my 500th video for a history of our farm I filmed with my dad.
    I started making these videos in the fall of 2019 as a way to help show what I do on a daily basis as a farmer. Agriculture is different from any other industry and I believe the more people that are showing their small piece of agriculture, helps to build our story. We face unique challenges and stressful situations but have some of the most rewarding payoffs in the end. I get to spend everyday doing what I love, raising my kids on the farm, and trying to push our farm to be better every year. I hope that I can address questions or concerns that you might have about farms and agriculture.
    I hope you enjoy my content and ask questions as you have them. I do my best to answer anything I can. Thanks for watching!

    I wouldn't be worried about planting corn in April. My grandpa always said 2 things about planting corn. If it's warm and dry after Easter put it in the ground. And never plant in mud

Planted corn one year on April 17, conditions like we have this year. Turned cold and snowed and stayed cold for a week. Ended up replanting. Our crop insurance date is April 15! Love your videos!

    You can get that tractor tuned by a company and get more power. It will not void the warranty nor will it mess up the tractor. I saw it on another farming channel and it will probably get you around the 400 hp range, also get better fuel economy too

    I truly don’t understand how you in the middle of the first planting of the year, with a new planter remember to record the videos. And also in a very good way describe what and why you do the things you do.

    Amazing how you do so many things with planting and so early. We start corn after May first. We used manure to get our soil test to high levels. We prepared our fields in the past now we no till or strip till. Here in West Texas it is up to 6 miles to a round the same soil from end to end. Just takes water to make 300 bu yields.

    I think that you ought to pull all the air filters and give them the best cleaning treatment you possibly can! Afterall you said you don't want to step out into that hanging dust cloud for your breathing so why should the tractor do its work as it could if its filters are becoming clogged?
    Most impressive performance from the outfit as it is eating up the acres at an amazing rate per hour, the cultivation team will not cope when both drills are planting!!

    Are you going to use the new planter to plant soy beans? Do you ever monitor the individual row planting performance? Did you hear back on the down force issue? With the soil prematurely filling the seed trench is the infurrow placement affected? Exciting times!

  • @b_lumenkraft
    @b_lumenkraft Před rokem +3

    If you don't fill it up, you have less compaction, right? How much does the load add? Is it relevant? When you do your analysis/yielding maps, would it show when the planter was full on one point of the field and empty at another?

    This will probably be a naive comment, but has it been considered or attempted to have knives or very thin cultivator shovels go through the compacted tire tracks at the end of the planter pass? I am not sure if marginally disturbing / breaking up the compacted soil after the fact would have any impact. Does the initial compaction from the tractor wheel / track create alter the seed placement by the planter and subsequent efforts to break up the compaction would not offer any benefits? Is there a stage of plant growth that is most impacted (no pun intended) by compaction? According to an article found online from no other than Golden Harvest (search: Golden Harvest - soil compaction effects on corn growth), ideal soil for planting corn should be approximately 25% air. Would an attempt to lightly “fluff” the soil be beneficial to try and restore the soil to approximately 25% have economic benefit? I know there are probably 30 other considerations to be counter to this idea. It could be an interesting small scale / engineering challenge study to conduct Professor Nathan? 🤔. Don’t know until you try. 😀
