- The 2000 Year Old Man is a character created by Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. According to Carl Reiner's son , Rob Reiner, in a 2008 interview, the characcter was originally established when Reiner and Brooks would fool around and adlib at cocktail parties. Apparently, fellow comic Steve Allen, thought the 2000 year old man was so hilarious, he convinced Reiner and Brooks to try a recording. This was the first sketch of that recording. The first sketches of this character remain a classic today.

"I have over 42,000 children... and not one comes to visit me!" Hilarious and timeless!
RIP Carl Reiner - a genius who will be sorely missed.
thank you. legend
He's been retired for ages. I thought he was already dead.
dont know if anyone gives a shit but if you're bored like me during the covid times you can watch all of the new movies and series on instaflixxer. Been binge watching with my brother recently xD
@Dylan Salvador yup, I've been using InstaFlixxer for since december myself :D
@Dylan Salvador yup, have been watching on instaflixxer for years myself :D
Rest well, Mr. Reiner. We loved you.
Do you think the dead have wifi in the afterlife?
We had this on vinyl when I was a kid. Loved this routine. RIP Mr Reiner - will never be another just like you.
Same here! I listened to this LP until I’d memorized it.
@@alisonhalerich I still have the LP (the original)... I think I had the whole thing memorized before I was 10 years old.
RIP Carl. You’re a legend and we won’t forget you. Thanks for the laughs.
Just watched this with my 23 yr old grandson...He laughed as hard as I did when I first heard this 50 years ago...how can you not love Mel Brooks, he's a genius
I was 25, maybe 26 when I first heard this. Just a couple years ago! I showed it to my 77 year old grandmother who somehow had never seen or heard this routine! She loved it!
One of the greatest has left us. May his name be a blessing
These two gentleman are simply the best !
I'd love for both of them to reach the age of 2,000. We need laughter more than anything today.
True, they weren't filthy like so many today are and they didn't have racial or political stuff all the way through like so many today. RIP Carl, you were one of the best!
I recently read an memoir of Carl Reiner. It seems that he and Mel Brooks just improvised their way through all of this. It's a perfect example of what comics call "Yes...and" where the comics just kept feeding off each others answers.
Thank you Carl Reiner, for decades of timeless and hilarious comedy. RIP, we'll miss your comic genius.
My people. My humor my best memories. Bless the comedians of my generation
Comedy will never be the same as it ever was... Thank you, gentlemen! 😂😅🤣
I just heard that Carl Reiner has died! He was 98 and had a full rich life. Still it fills me with sadness. Thank You Carl Reiner! You gave joy! So much joy!!! I shall miss you very much!
Carl Reiner is on the Mount Rushmore of TV comedy. And great in the Ocean's trilogy. RIP and thanks.
Rest In Peace Carl Reiner 🌹♥️
I'm an '85 millennial and spend a lot of time as a kid listening to these records, timeless stuff
All improvised. Pure genius.
RIP Carl. Thanks for all the laughs.
there is no talent like these two men
RIP Carl Reiner. Thank you for the laughter and your extraordinary zest for life.
RIP Mr. Reiner and thank you so much for all your thought and entertainment.
This will never get old even if it lasts for 2,000 years! Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner were comic geniuses.
What a talent! What a life! All the laughter he gave us for so long.
My introduction to Carl Reiner. RIP. One of the greats.
One of the most extraordinary talents of our lifetimes. RIP.
These two are still with us. They should do a 2,100 year old man album before it's took late.
I thought the same thing too.
@kevin johnson what are you talking about? They famously hang out together at Reiner's place in Bev Hills every evening for dinner & to watch Jeopardy. Check out recent The Guardian interview.
Too late, Carl Reiner passed away today, 30th June, 2020 at the age of 98. RIP
RIP Carl
@kevin johnson You're taking your info from a cartoon show?
Thank you for uploading this. I have heard about this routine but never heard it before. Absolute classic
this is only one version. There are a few more.
I remember listening to this on a Sabena flight from Brussels to Toronto at the age of 13 in the 80s. Is still classic and funny and then and still is now.
RIP Carl Reiner! I'll miss you and Mel Brooks Y2K Man skits.
The story I heard from Mel Brooks on the documentary "Make a Noise" was that Carl Reiner and Brooks were so worried about doing the first 2,000-Year-Old Man album that Steve Allen had to make the recording in secret, after hours, and pledge not to release it if Reiner and Brooks didn't like it. Also Allen had to do a lot of heavy editing on the tape because Reiner kept laughing at Brooks' jokes. I love Carl Reiner and thank him for all the fun and laughter he gave us.
This cuts off at the end 😥
My father introduced this to me years ago and I've always loved it! My father just passed away in January so listening to this really makes me think of my dad. Thanks
Yeah same I grew up with Mel brooks movies and I used to love my grandmas record of this and used to listen to it every time we visited her and my grandfather !
A great, fun treat for fathers and sons and daughters on Father's Day!
The 2000 Year Old Man - Created and Performed by Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner
2000 year old man Phil
Never run for a bus there’ll always be another, I just stroll.
What was the means of transportation back then?
Mostly, fear.
...Robin Hood...he stole from everybody and kept everything...I remember that line from when I was a teenager...
Two Geniuses
very cool. Larry David sent me here, after I noticed him recommending it to Ricky Gervais in "Ricky Gervais Meets... Larry David."
me2
Simpsons brought me here!
+Celebrations yup
They did the first 2000 year old man routine in 1950. Listening to them now, in February, 2020, it feels so good to laugh -- laugh so hard that tears run down my cheeks! I think my personal favorite is Brooks's answer to Reiner's question, "What was the main form of transportation back then?" "Fear." And certainly, comedy -- the ability to make us laugh -- has to be the absolutely best thing human beings have ever discovered -- better and more essential to our survival than the discovery of space or the invention of Saran Wrap.
Thanks for the laughs!🙏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I have the original album. I grew up laughing my ___ off to this. As a kid I knew entire dialogs and I'd perform them for my friends.
Brilliant!
Its a pity brooks never made a movie about this character it would have been a blast. Instead of the cartoon from 1975
best album ever
Brilliant , hearing this for the first time ........
One of my favorites! The 20013 Year Old Man is even better.
For a nearly 70 year old skit, this kicks ass
Legends
Watching from Australia
I have not heard this in years. We had the album at home. I think my brother has all our parents records. I don't if the album is among them. Just genius to come up with this.
Masters of comedy
I think of R 'n B whenever I put leftovers in the fridge. A great pair.
Perfection...!!!
We'll miss you, Carl.
Its sad and disappointing that Blazing Saddles is being demonized by the Ban The Books People and individual teachers who refuse to teach their students about the historical value of this movie. RIP and Thank You Carl Reiner
..and not one comes to visit me! ROTFLMAO
CARL REINER R.I.P
@@dougashman5040 He was one of a kind
The "nectarine bit" was amazing ^_^
"I have 42,000 children.....and not ONE of them comes to visit!!....." 😆
Mans discovery of space? That was good, that was good. But it completely ruined the looking up in the sky sector, huge layoffs
for some reason the audio alone is funnier than when accompanied by the cartoon.
Some studio should come up an animated feature film and use the same character designs from the 1975 animated special with these two voicing their respectively.
Carl Reiner - the best straight man of all time. Missing him already.
I love the part "not in this clip" where he asks if he knew Jesus, oh yes nice young man always came into the shop never bought anything though only wanted water
Brought here by "the Simpsons".
"We didn't know who was ladies and who was fellas." Ya don't say.
He's right about nectarines, they're the best.
Fantastic----------------------
CLASSIC !
0:42 I have the same birthday as the 2000 Year Old Man!!!
Classically funny
Wonderful extremely funny!
Absolute Genius
This is so brilliant
R.I.P. Carl Reiner
This is an awesome TBT !
Rest in Peace Carl Reiner
Loved the Jerk!
Harold Ramis brought me here... ;-)
Reiner could play slapstick or, with Mel, straight man perfectly
“Hey there’s ladies here…” Props to Bernie.
Quality
That was brilliant.
Norm MacDonald sent me here
He gave you bad directions. You should have made a right two blocks back and then a U-turn.
42,000 children and none of them come to visit. lol
i bought the animated version on VHS for me and my daughter to watch,we hated it so much that it became a joke.we have passed it off on each other as gifts.i started this tradition by including it in her Christmas gifts, birthday, graduation.etc.we enjoy it more this way.
He nearly lived 2000 years! 😀
I love the Adolph Hartler sketch
I remember that Pul revere was mentioned and the entire story was on a half hour or hour program!
Enter Laughing. Exit Laughing 😄
Funny, he was always just “sir.” He never had a name. And they cut off the end.
"This is very personal sir, but at your age are you still able to produce semen?"
"I got two boys in the Navy."
Good for Bernie !
Say no to Bernie
The video cuts out before the greatest part - the ending! Who would do this?
RIP Mr. Reiner!
You knew Joan of Ark?
I WENT with her, dummy! lmao
It's dated a bit. Some jokes I think were more ground breaking in 1960, when audiences were far more conservative than nowadays, but don't get me wrong. Mel Brooks still puts a smile on my face if only for that wonderful Yiddish accent of his, and I still chuckle over the Saran Wrap line.
Yeah, at the beginning of the sketch, Carl Reiner mentions Idlewild Airport, which is now more well known as JFK.
@@jasobres oh, so that is Idlewild. Thanks.
Brilliant, thnx for posting. They should get together again & do another one, lol! I would love to see that :)
i don't think Mel could at his age
Hi Michael, u might be right of course, I don't know about his health issues but just to say that being elderly doesn't preclude u from anything ( we have an 87 year old in our over 50's badminton club :p ) & Just cos Mr Brooks is older, it doesn't mean he isn't the same incredible comedy genius - greatest of our time in my opinion!
I bet he could still make me laugh anyway without even saying anything, lol!
This pic is from 2013 & he appears to still be going strong.

A public comment is the utube is priceless. Thank you.
Still funny.
2000 years later
The 2,000 year old man doesn’t eat fried food.
RIP Carl Reiner
Bernie Sanders discoverer of women
I thought of him as soon as he said Bernie.
Why post it and cut off the ending?
