    Janna Smith will discuss When the Island Had Fish: The Remarkable Story of a Maine Fishing. Community Fishing has been a central part of life on the island of Vinalhaven for over 4,000 years. For her book, Janna interviewed many living fishermen and fishing families, and spent many hours in the island historical society reading diaries, letters, photos and more. In her talk, Janna will tell stories about fishermen and fish that will offer a portrait of an evolving island and its people, their resourcefulness, diverse talents, struggles and remarkable successes.
    Janna Malamud Smith is a writer and psychotherapist. She is the author of five books. Private Matters (1997) and A Potent Spell (2003) were chosen as “Notable Books” by The New York Times Sunday Book Review. My Father is a Book (2006) was selected as a Washington Post Best Book of the Year, and a New York TimesEditor’s Choice.
