- Paper Mario gets his revenge on the Scissors Boss from Paper Mario: The Origami King. Remember how the Scissors boss can hit Mario for 999 damage? Well, today, Paper Mario wants to give the Scissors Boss a taste of their own medicine and deal 999 damage onto the Scissors boss! The final boss King Olly might be able to change the fabric of reality with origami, but Mario can change the fabric of reality with CODING! We also might have a special appearance from Bobby the Bob-omb in this video.

In Paper Mario: The Origami King (on Nintendo Switch), Mario deals more damage the higher his HP is. Mario can normally achieve an HP value of around 200, but if we edit/ hack this value to be higher, Mario continues to do more damage. In this video, Mario tries to edit his HP as high as possible so that he can deal 999 damage onto the Scissors boss, redeeming the dignity of all paper in the harsh world of rock, paper, scissors.

- The camera angle when Mario does a single jump attack that defeats the scissors boss is weird. I'm guessing this is because the camera angle was programmed to move back down when the scissors boss is defeated, since you normally can't defeat the scissors boss with a jump attack. This is why you can't see the 999 damage hitsplit if Mario does just a single jump attack on the scissors boss, because it's out of view of the default camera

The game didn't crash, Mario's jump was just so powerful that its connection with the scissors caused a ripple dissolve through the fabric of reality, causing the very universe to implode, collapsing upon itself and leaving behind naught but a black void
It's just like what happens when two Falcon Punches connect with each other! 😂
I think that the game is programmed like "if Mario doesn't die, it means he jumped!" So when you have more that 999 HP, and the scissors attacks you, Mario doesn't die, so the game thinks Mario avoided, because normally a clean hit would kill him, so the game plays the jumping animation. Also, when you get hit by the attack and die, the game plays the animation of Mario getting cut in half. Since he didin't actually die and the game has nothing programmed to happen if Mario tanks the scissors attack, he plays the avoiding animation.

Yeah I’d say that’s very likely, sort of an “if then else” statement. So basically the game plays the special death animation if Mario’s health hits 0 (normally it would always do this when hit since it deals so much damage), otherwise it plays the jump animation. That way it’s basically 1 check and that’s it

Hey, something that came into my mind, here's an challenge idea for a video, simple.
Try to beat Paper Mario: The Origami King with these rules:
1: At the beginning, modify Mario's HP to 999 (It will decrease to 990 soon enough, but nothing can be done)
2: Go trough the whole game and beat Olly, WITHOUT healing ONCE. No means of heal. Mushrooms, hearts, 1up mushrooms, NOTHING. Neither in battle, or the overworld.

@@ZXMany What is the exact health that the Scissors need to have to trigger the "take the cover out" phase of the fight since Scissors have 336 HP? If we all know what is the damage we need to give to the Scissors before it takes the cover out, we could plain a strategy to give the Scissors big damage just before the fight gets brutal and we could take less time with the Scissors without the cover.
I guess it would be some number of 200.

Here’s a video idea if you are interested: What would be the other members of the legion of stationary, and what would their boss fights look like? I can imagine a pencil sharpener boss, eraser boss, and type writer boss just to name a few.

How to easily win this fight:
Play as Rock Mario instead of Paper Mario
Would I be correct to assume that (using your example) even if Mario is made strong enough to *deal* 999 points of damage with a jump, he still *receives* the same 999 (but has enough HP to survive it)? That is, he both deals and takes damage for the jump attack, correct? If so, then I’m curious what would happen if his HP (and the Scissors’) were such that the attack brought both characters’ HP to zero at the same time. Can you, in effect, simultaneously “win” yet still lose?
Great question! If Mario jumps on the scissors and takes damage, he doesn't deal any damage during that turn, so there's no way for Mario to defeat and be defeated by the scissors boss. But, there are other situations where Mario can defeat an enemy and die in the same turn, and I'll have that + some other examples in an upcoming video where I show a bunch of interesting experiments with Mario's HP :)

the weird thing I found about this boss is if you have gotten the plus one attack and jump on the scissors while the cover is aiming up when you jump on him the first of course it breaks the cover, and since you have plus one attack you would think you would die in one hit but no you can jump on him normally without taking damage even though the cover is already broken.
It is minor but the cutscene of the scissors going back to his sniping form after breaking the cover is much faster than him unsheathing himself so in theory, if you can do it quick enough you can save a few seconds in speedrunning.
That's really interesting! That might mean an extra "final cut" attack from the boss, and that's a bit of a long animation. In current Battle Lab boss fights of the boss, speedrunners beat Scissors without Scissors being able to use the final cut attack
@@ZXMany maybe but looking at your video on how to beat scissors quickly, in my head I would do everything the same in the video except the fourth turn where I would jump on the cover instead of the handle, and if you do it quickly enough it will not only give a slightly quicker cutscene but only prevent the scissors from using his final cut attack.

What would an attack like this do on rubberband? Will th Game Crash? Will rubber band restor 999 HP? Or will phase 2 activate?
Great question! I've done some similar testing on the rubber band boss in my POW Block video, and my guess is that the Rubber Band will be left with 1 HP, because so far, only the 1000-fold-arm attack can deal the last 1 damage to the rubber band boss (in phase 1), so there will probably be a damage cap

He will most likely survive, because if if you don’t finish the first phase with the Thousand Fold Arms, it still regenerates back HP

@@jjr_the_tree Great question! If I remember correctly, I think you might be able to take out the Handaconda without doing phase 2 of the fight if you can do enough damage by editing Mario's HP. I'll have to test it again to make sure, I'll probably post a quick clip in a tweet

Fun fact: if you layer enough paper on top of itself, you won't be able to cut it with scissors.

5 Marios = 1000 HP (it becomes too many layers for Scissors to cut through)
This also explains why Mario does more damage with higher HP, there are more Marios that are attacking!

Great questions! I'll probably post some small updates with little video clips on Twitter because it's not long enough to be a full CZcams video. With the Fire Vellumental, we've done some similar tests where we try to beat the fire vellumental without attacking it!
