As a smallholder, I look on with envy a the professionalism of proper farmers shown in this video.
In about a month, I will be posting video on how we do our hay making on our small holding.
The contrast will be stark as I attempt to get my old baler fired into action once again!!

im not really a veggie person, but ever since I started sharing a horse and had to do all the hay stuff and watch them munch on it I've become quite obsessed with hay for no apparent reason like nowadays I just find the sound of them ruffling so satisfying and the smell is so pleasant. its not like I wanna eat them at all, but they look so good that I wanna watch the horses eat it. hence this video is very very satisfying to watch. i think my therapist might become concerned though.

Do the farmers grow a specific type of grass for that soil type or does it not matter which type of grass is grown?
Also do you have a video on silage. What it is and how how it differs from hay. Which is better etc?
I work all day in a field next to a farm where haybaling has been happening recently and have been struggling to breathe because of pollen but also the turning of the hay and dust clouds from it. I’m wondering if as a farmer you have any tips?
Oh gosh, I feel your pain. I get hayfever every year and although I enjoy haymaking, my eyes can be red sore by the end of it. The only thing that takes the edge off is some good hayfever tablets, cold water on the back of the neck and on the face and long sleeves (hay makes skin itchy). Other than that, it can be a bit tortuous. Good luck!!

Hi there. Thank you for the question. The device that catches the bales and releases them when there are groups of 8 is called a Bale Sledge. Very useful piece of kit.

Why do they do round bales and sometimes square bales? Is there a reason or just preference? I.e. it looks easier to pack when they're square.

Why 2 different sizes for the bales?
Is hay an annual that needs to be tilled/reseeded every year or does it just grow back?
Hi Duncan. Specialised hay grass is good for about 3 years, after which it will be reploughed/tilled and reseeded. These fields have just been baled up again for this year, so that’s 2 years so far. Maybe a second cut later in the summer too. Leave grass too long and it starts to get weaker and other varieties start to inhabit the field too.
Can you cut and bail hay in one day?
Ideally you would be looking to get the hay down to 13% moisture content before baling.
That's useful to know. Perhaps explains why I am always paranoid about hot bales when we put them away in the barn.

Hi there. I don't at all. I am learning as I go along, making all the mistakes that everyone else has probably made. We are lucky in that neighbours are proper farmers.

My Country Life don’t put yourself down. I’m not from an agricultural background but I studied Agriculture and worked on a farm for a few years, and from what I can see you have a more pragmatic and intelligent approach than many farmers I have met. Don’t forget that NOT being from a farming background is actually sometimes a great advantage people like you and I have!
I actually think you’re wise enough to realise this already though, and I dare say you’re being a little self deprecating just so you don’t appear like a know it all, which is understandable lol. Oh and just wanted to say great videos, thanks for sharing them. From another Herefordian.

Hi Ivan. Machines have made farming much less labour intensive, but inevitably this can lead to lower prices rather than increased profits for the farmer. Technology can be a mixed blessing.

Do farmers actually do any work. I'm just you could automate driving the tracker and field position by GPS and cut out the farmer

Is anyone else disappointed with the appearance of 'modern farming' and miss the tennant farmers of the 1970s who resembled the Wurzels or Fred West?
