  • Oscar Masato Higa Sensei (Shorin/ Kobayashi Ryu Kyudokan) is one of the eminent Okinawan Karate masters in the world today who tirelessly travels over the globe teaching Karate and Kobudo. Higa Sensei's first encounter with karate was with his father, Master Jintatsu Higa. Jintatsu Higa Sensei started karate with his uncle Chojun Miyagi, founder of Goju Ryu and then continued training in Shuri-te under Giho Maeda, Ankichi Arakaki and Shoshin Nagamine.
Then, Oscar Higa Sensei trained under Michihisa Itaya Sensei, who was sent to Argentina by JKF Japan. Higa Sensei trained in Shotokan under Itaya Sensei in order to get an experience on the sportive aspect of karate and was promoted as the first Shotokan Black Belt holder in Argentina.
Later, Oscar Higa Sensei along with his brother Benito Higa Sensei joined Shorin Ryu Kyudokan School headed by their uncle Yuchoku Higa Sensei in Okinawa.
This interview was filmed by his student Indishe Senanayake Sensei during Higa sensei's Sri Lanka visit in 2011 at Indishe Sensei's home. In this part of the interview, Higa Sensei speaks on how he engaged with karate-do. Please look forward for the second part of the interview, where sensei speaks about the philosophy of Okinawan Karate.
This interview was uploaded to the internet by the Sri Lanka Branch of Kyudokan on the 67th birthday of Oscar Higa Sensei on 28th March 2012.
We would like to thank Ms. Valeria Bandini for her kind assistance in translating this Interview to English.
