Back with new music dropping an album this week, American singer-songwriter Musiq Soulchild a.k.a Taalib Johnson joins The Pivot Podcast for a conversation covering everything from his sensual hits, battling self-image with self-esteem struggles, and the evolution of his confidence driving his journey through music.
Considered one of the most influential R&B artists of all time, Ryan, Fred, and Channing dive into Musiq’s path to this point and discuss his transformation to stardom. Musiq opens up about his upbringing which he attributes to a lot of growing pains over the years. Dropping out of college and leaving the house at 17, Musiq talks about being forced to grow up quickly and the impact it had on him personally and professionally. From Musqi’s perspective, it was all a big risk for him to pursue his passion and he questioned himself every step despite the success and quick climb up record charts!
Inspired by the sounds of similar artists such as D’Angelo, Musiq talks about how he worried if his sound would be accepted by the majority. Learning more about music and using his pain to produce legendary songs, he reflects on his process of writing songs and what moved him to produce this style. Ryan, Fred, and Channing reflect back on their days of listening to Musiq’s songs and the romantic tone it set, especially his big hit, Love. Musiq lets the guys know that Love was actually a therapy session for him and a product of searching for his definition of love.
Fred goes down to the path of what it’s like to be in the industry limelight and how the journey affects him. Despite his 20+ years of experience, Musiq shares how he still gets nervous under the bright lights and even still gets nervous with every performance. He talks about his struggles balancing being an introvert and having an extroverted profession.
Inspired by Donny Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, and Stevie Wonder, Musiq plans to continue to make music that’s a soundtrack to life. Fred, Ryan, and Channing don’t shy away from letting him know that he’s a legend in their book and that his music has forever impacted moved them.

The pivot is now pivoted to becoming a therapy session which is making it the number one podcast to be free sessions 😀
Faaaaaaaaaacts!
Well Said!!!!
Agreed
True!
It's the question RC ask.
"Nobody can come to your aid if they don't know you need help" -Musiq Soulchild
So true. Wow
Facts that’s so real.
I’m a 39 year man going back to college as a psych major w/ a concentration in mental health. One day to be a therapist. What a dope episode & much needed for the male/minority community. We need to hear it’s okay to not be okay. One of the best shows you have done team! Much love & respect
Awesome, Good luck to you and all your future endeavors!👍🙏💕
You touch my brother... I've been insecure about getting back in school. I'm 36. Rooting for you bro!!! I'm getting myself in shape to get back school. 💪🏾 Thank you!!!
I’m cheering for you brotha! You bring rich and diverse life experiences to your educational environment that will elevate the learning. Sending good vibes for your success and all the lives you’ll touch. 🙏🏾💛💫
This is what makes this podcast the best... Musiq said at 1st that I didn't want to talk about his past.. 2 mins later, starts talking about his past & continues to talk about his life. And was comfortable doing so. Being around these 3 make u feel comfortable talking about anything.
That's not what happened. Lol. He exposed a process, not his feelings or his childhood experiences. Obviously, not a therapeutic session, just a regular conversation based on the research the 3 interviewers do on every guest prior to when the show up.
I hear what you sayin, but he was taking about not getting into too personal things and not naming names.
They let him talk. Other shows are too busy talking about themselves
FACTS
@@azwildcat4345 u wrong that's exactly eat happen GO WATCH THE INTERVIEW AGAIN 💯
Musiq got one of THE best discographies of any artist of any genre. Philly legend
I agree!
Super facts
FACTS!!
Big facts my guy
Facts
Everything Musiq said I needed to hear and it felt like he was me speaking about me. THIS WAS AN EXCELLENT INTERVIEW!! Love Musiq Soulchild...his music is timeless!
I concur
@@thought_check8051 me too
I also concur
I concur
I concur as well!
3 Headed Monster strikes again. RC noticed how “heavy” The interview started & channeled it right into “booty-foot” where Channing & Fred played into it PURPOSELY. Great job to recognize what needed to happen then flow right into your necessary parts. Musiq THEN opened up. Great interview guys as always💯🙏🏿💪🏾
Caught That excellent strategy
They have become a safe space for men. Initially there weren't any deep questions, but somehow Musiq felt comfortable enough to drop his guard and send some type of que that signaled " let's have a real conversation". Years and years of interviews this guy has done and on this day with these men he shows all vulnerability. The guys are doing bigger work than podcasting.
I respect how humble he is, a lot of artists that have similar success are unreachable people.
Like who?
Musiq sought external validation as most of us do. He wages war against himself. His mind is his battlefield . What he fails to understand is that his journey is part of the process, and genius... If he learns to let go and accept he will have peace. Perfectionist and Control Freak . Simply human
Musiq SoulChild's run in the mid 2000's was incredible, damn near legendary. His music got me through college. I'm excited for his new album.
So Beautiful, B.u.d.d.y., Love, FortheNight, HalfCrazy, Just Friends. His catalog is strong!.
Salute to the R&B OG 💯
Now brotha his discography is LEGENDARY. The best song writer since the great Stevie Wonder.
@@GTGoWGod no argument on my end.
I concur your message 💯
Definitely a bonafide legend , even with just his songwriting 👏🏽 let alone his own catalog a
Fred, I admired how you leaned into this conversation, named his feelings, and everyone can learn and heal!
He really did a great job carefully.
Ain’t no way they got musiq soul child. This podcast is goat
I see my fellow viewers are picking up what I'm seeing, Musiq has a lot going on emotionally, and a lot of it stems from his childhood and/or his upbringing. Mental health is so important, and I'm glad that its no longer taboo in the black and brown community. Kudos to The Pivot, changing lives and drawing in the viewers; we can feel the emotional rollercoasters. As a Clinical Mental Health counselor, its so refreshing.
His song "so beautiful" go crazy💯
Wow, this guy was deep. I enjoyed this interview. I’ve struggled with my self confidence too and to hear a man of his caliber speak about his struggles is amazing
Musiq first album is one of the greatest R&B masterpieces of all time. It's great to hear this legend speak. 🙌
Facts 💯
I felt every word that he spoke . He's speaking for alot of sincere thinkers in the world just tryna do the right thing but in reality what is really right? Because what right to you could be wrong to someone else.
Neo-Soul GOAT!!!! ""Aijuswanaseing" is Quintessential!!!!!
"I thought that I could get it from people if I gave it away..." This sums of my life!
Musiq Soulchild 😮 how did y'all find him????
The Pivot is DIFFERENT!
Facts💯💯
He's been around. He was on the 85 South Show not long ago.
@@iammikalanthony and that was a cringe episode!!! Musiq was much more stand off than how he is here
Man another great interview with another underrated legend. This chemistry with RC, Fred, and Channing is undeniable
Musiq is still confused. Many of us need therapy especially our blackmen and women. Went through it and still going through it!
My mom loved him she passed away in November much love to Musiq
Sorry for your loss.
🙌🏽💜
🙏🏾 I am with your Mom. I realize I have every Musiq CD
My condolences bro
Prayers and blessings sent your Way
Definitely get where he coming from. A lot of times we say that's just the way we are without realizing everything we are, comes from something or someone. Everything has roots. If you want to pull weeds, pull from the roots
Great interview with one of the best Singers in the late 90s and early 2000s!My ladyfriend R.I.P. and I use to love to listen to Musqis Soulchild!Very Humble manGod bless him and The Povit Podcast, best in the business.
When I tell you I love the pivot. Without trying they get to the meat and the guests allow themselves to be vulnerable enough to share things that are so relatable but held inside because that's what we do. We're learning how to process and unravel distorted thinking or thoughts. Loved this and love the Pivot!
Awesome episode! His vulnerability & honesty matched with y’all’s humor & positivity = great tv.
This deserves 1M + views ! Bro spoke to my soul I needed this at this exact moment in my life no cap 🫡 Salute Musiq SChild his intellect on a whole nother Level and he’s not afraid to be vulnerable and open I’m still struggling with that myself this pointed me in the right direction I appreciate you fam🙏🏿💫
THIS ISH IS DEEP!!!!! He's extremely self-aware...
I’m so in love with Musiq and how he tells the story of life, love and struggle. I had just purchased On my Radio and had not torn the plastic off the CD yet. I asked my beautiful soul of a friend, who has since passed, to meet me and listen to it. Him and I jammed to every song from beginning to end. We fell in love with the words and his ability to bring life to life. Thank you soooo much for your gift. God has truly blessed you to bless the world!! Love you always and forever!! Please sing at my wedding!!
Music is powerful God bless
Musiq has that effect when I tell you how I burned a hole in it constant rotation every day. My alias is Soulstar Musiclover and no one has ever put the correlation together 😉. My condolences on your loss but you still have the memories.♥️✨
My take on this amazing episode I got from it was SELF LOVE,SELF ACCEPTANCE,SELF WORTH. Because once you realize who you are you can see things from a different perspective..
Great episode fellas
First I wanna say I completely understand him and see a piece of myself in him. It's really a huge argument with himself on a daily basis. You can tell it's evolved to a healthier stage, I wonder how bad it was 10 years ago
Freaking love how they kept throwing jokes his way to pull him out of (self-pity) type mood. It seems that he really need help to let go of the past.(as so do i) I struggle with the same thing. And seeing someone else struggling with the same thing helps me realize We need help.
Man musiq personality is gold! This dude interviews is always funny and real lol
Yessirrrrrr The OGs Made My Friday With This One Love Musiq 🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🐐🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈🏈
The album I can listen to from start to finish!
Childhood traumas can make you the victim and the villain.. love the interview…definitely was needed
Ohhh SNAP the Soulchild!!!😎 .... he's helped me express myself in "relationships" many times through song when I couldn't articulate.
OMG, this was deep ,Thank you Musiq for your transparency ,makes me appreciate your music even more. . Pivot making that Barbara Walters interviews 👌
For Talib to be able to articulate what many feel and not lean on his gift is commendable.
Man, this was a great interview. This interview will probably hit home with a lot of people. Thanks guys
Musiq Soulchild Expectations of himself is so big... He doesn't even realize how much of a music monster he already is. Great show fellas once again
Wow. This was deep. A much needed discussion amongst brothas that every day brothas go through. Like Musiq, sometimes you speaking but ppl not really hearing you because its not their experience. Musiq, I hear you. Seems like this is my life too. I get it.
Outstanding 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾I’m a huge Musiq fan & Im so glad he was given the spotlight on y’all show. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him do an interview for over an hour. Bro is deep & makes me love him more. It’s bout to be a Musiq Soulchild Saturday in my house😂🎶🎤🎤
It's the God in Musiq, that didn't want to take the "unfair advantage", "lean in", etc. route. I think that's a beautiful thing Bro!
He reminds me so much of Wale in humility and in poise. I relate to them so much.
Wow, we’re all Virgos. It makes so much sense 🥺❤️
Love his musical legacy & genius, praying for his peace of mind and serenity. ❤🙏🏾
Each person is special, to oneself and to the universe. You are a raindrop in the rain-shower, a ripple in the water, a wave in the ocean, a grain in the sand, a star in the sky…..a vital & important piece. Without you, we are not whole.
💟☮️☯️
For some reason I feel like this is what Donny Hathaway would've sounded like in a interview. Music soulchild is so gifted but hearing him talk you wouldn't believe this is the same person that wrote just friends, so beautiful, love!
The song is So long by Musiq. The guys couldnt get what he was talking about. Its relevant to his soul and so many who understands what it means to love and commitment. Musiq embodied this essence and mindfulness of understanding basics of human dignity and respect
My boy RC rocking the FUBU!
He's really explaining through Virgo lenses. I felt this on a deeper level.
I still listen to Musiq damn near daily… Along with my 3 beautiful daughters who have him on their playlist… Mad respect to the Pivot for this great interview and therapy session. Thank you!
I rarely comment but I just want to say: Musiq, I met you years ago backstage after your show in Austin and never knew until now that you would save me with this interview. Until now, I've been fighting the same demons... LITERALLY the same ones and you provided the context and direction through your revelations. I thought I was alone. Keep working on Talib because the answers are there. Keep going! Thank you! 🙏🏿
I just wanna thank yaw as a Philadelphian...B Dawkins last week then MUSIQ this WEEK!! i didnt see this coming...been with yaw since day one keep it up I love this! Yaw showing philly so much love!
Underrated artist. Remember when he was in the top conversation in R&B for a long time.
He is an R&B legend. True love in his music❤love
This was an genuine authentic conversation that I enjoyed immensely. Had I never heard this conversation today 2/20/23, I would have never known how this lyrical genius viewed himself and how I/we see him through my eyes. His swag, the gap in his teeth, the slight head tilt his style of dress he is a perfect imperfection who will out live the test of time. Come on now! Musiq is a star who remained Humble ♥️✨🔥
When Ryan said “143,” I knew he was a real fan!
Nahhhh real talk …. Cuz 143 is a banger and people slept on it
This episode was so amazing and underrated as hell. I just love how progressive these men are to be able to sit down and express their thoughts and emotions without being judged or looked down upon. We as men need more circles like this which can help to make us better in all aspects of our lives
I am a HUGE Musiq fan and you guys are the only ones that allowed him to speak so freely! Great interview!!
Went straight to listen to LOVE immediately after this therapeutic session ❤. Keep pushing Kings!
Loved him since the first cd. Come thru Philly . Classic sound & classic neo soul...just friends!
Ryan , Fred & Crowder you guys are BOSS LEVEL. Keep up the great work bros, love yall.
Circuit City on Tuesday! My brother and I would look in the Circuit City ad on Sunday to see what 💿 were coming out. It was a weekly event.
Musiq Soulchild is one of my favorite artists. He is a musical genius and his music is genuine.
I love the fact that RC, Channing and Fred took care of the business first and played a team sport. They know that what makes this podcast unbelievable and make guests feel comfortable. Is all three of there personalities. You guys know when a guest gives you a certain type of energy. Okay let me ask this to keep him comfortable. Yall have great timing and it’s only going to get better.
As a creative who loves the Pivot, who is also in the their unbearable mental health chapter… hearing him speak helps me realize I’m in the middle of MY Pivot. This was needed. ❤
That song "love" he did is a timeless classic
Musiq is giving "woe is me" energy in this interview, and he's attempting to disguise it. It's clear that he hasn't fully reconciled with the things from his past, which is completely understandable. Childhood trauma is very tough to work through. Kudos to him for his courage to share his story on this platform. I wish him well along his continued journey of healing. ♥
It’s that Philly dark cloud that stay with us
@@phillybul215it’s more than just a Philly dark cloud Musiq grew up in what might some would consider a “religious cult”!
This was the best one yet for me gents. You guys and the guests you bring on are crushing it. We are growing with you!
I love musiq soo much I’m 23 yrs old and I still listen to him literally everyday
I appreciate Musiq Soulchild because I have done the same thing over and over in my head now to release it you feel much better thank you!!
I glad i watch this I understood what he was saying about confidence. There are times that i have i feel like im not good enough. I can't talk with to many people about what im dealing with.
YOU ARE ENOUGH! YOU ARE GOOD ENOUGH & MORE THAN ENOUGH!
@@ayanaresellerqueen1685 Thank you. There are time's i just do not feel like it
Amazing interview! He was spot on with everything he said. Your mindset becomes your reality.
Musiq is the reason i started taking my talent serious a real great artist!!!!
Planet Earth is sometimes a "challenging playground". Brave souls we are for coming... 😌
It is crazy that someone is seen as crazy for not exploiting who they are. Values have changed. Applaud the Brotha for having scruples.
Great interview! I honestly think he needed this. I'm so glad he got to share and express himself. I love me some Musiq Soulchild.❤️
Musiq Soulchild's music is very timeless. I still listen to his songs today. I Love this interview. Once again Pivot you have given us another great episode.
excellent! interview and great therapy session we didn't know we needed. greatful to the guys for the energy in the room that made musiq feel comfortable enough to open up and share. continued to healing to musiq and continued success to the pivot. fire episode!
This podcast is literally a therapy session
Yo man, this is one of the best episodes of all time. My only problem is that y'all should've gone a little bit longer cause Musiq has a lot more to get off his chest. Love the show 💯💪🏿💪🏿
lol
🎯
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Im so glad you guys did this interview. Music Soulchild, Thank you!! I love his music and I’m glad he was able to express himself on this platform.
Musiq Soulchild, Philly in the house!!!!
This was deep. Thank you.
This is so good! I can relate to several things Musiq referred to in his experiences...especially taking a long time to notice his own resume. Kudos to him. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💜
This is the reason why it's the Pivot or nothing at all for me. Purely genuine conversation and tackling great individuals that you guys show the human side which most of their fans don't get a chance to see. Great job R.C. Fred T and Channing. Also the staff and producers. You guys please please don't change and keep this same format and continue with groundbreaking production, and entertaining question with a sprinkle of humor. D.C. and MD is riding and huge fans of the Pivot. ✌🏾💯💪🏾
This proves the concept that you can seemingly have everything outwardly and still be hampered by you and how u see yourself. Great interview, Great therapy session bcos that is what this is
This intro song gets me everytime 🔥🔥
Yes I love it. Makes me so hype 🤣
Ive been looking for the whole song so i can play it in the whip🤷🏿♂️

Amazing....Never stop, don't quit, you are providing a service to the ppl. The service of people seeing their heros and idols as people who deal with everyday issues.
You guys ability to have genuine, heartfelt conversations is beyond words. In many cases you're helping ppl heal and in turn helping your views see themselves in the guest and heal as well.
Pivot is hands down the free zone. You allow people to open up with no judgement which allows them to be vulnerable. You are Men ALLOWING MEN TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES AND BLACK MEN AT THAT. THANK YOU. I ALWAYS SAY WHEN WATCHING PIVOT MAN THAT WAS A GOOD ONE AND THEN YOU COME BACK AND TOP IT. CAN WE GET LYFE JENNINGS HE HAS A STORY TO TELL
Musiq Soulchild has timeless music that can't be beat, and only on The Pivot would you see a Hall of Famer and a soul music titan.💯
Pardon me darling if I alarmed ya, I don't wanna bother, you I just wanna 🎶🎶🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾 PIVOT MAN GIVE EM THEY EMMY
I've been a #1 fan since you released your first album/song. I'm more of a fan now because the media portrays celebrities as "the life to live". The fact that you were so transparent and willing to share your imperfections is amazing. Thank bro! As always this podcast is on point with humanizing those that are shown in front of our televisions.
The use of the word reciprocity is why I love Freddy T.
Musiq walked around in my brain and communicate my life's experiences and feelings. It's eerie.
mental health is a serious thing fighting with your inner thoughts can drive most people krazy. i luv this interview, but i luv this dudes music i think he's an awesome artist.
A vulnerable man is King of a man. One who knows how to be open enough to express their feelings is very attractive.
This is going to be a classic!
