Highlights of the Middleweight Championship battle between Marvelous Marvin Hagler and Alan Minter in September 1980 at Wembley Stadium.
In March 1980, Minter won a controversial decision against Vito Antuofermo to win the WBA and WBC Middleweight titles. Minter successfully defended those titles against Antuofermo in the rematch, dominating from start to finish en route to an 8th round TKO.
In November 1979, Hagler suffered a controversial draw against Vito Antuofermo, where Antuofermo retained both his WBA and WBC Middleweight titles. Hagler then racked up three straight wins over Marcos Geraldo, Loucif Hamani and Bobby Watts.
With those wins, he earned his shot against Minter. Minter caught controversy when he infamously said "No black man is going to take my title” in an interview. Hagler’s response to that statement was "He will pay for saying that when we meet at Wembley”.
Minter had since apologized for the statement and quoted in an interview that he was told to say it to hype up the fight.
Minter was a small betting favorite against Hagler going into the fight. The ending of the fight remains one of the most memorable (in a way) in boxing history as British boxing fans was angered by the outcome; throwing beer bottles and cans into the ring. Hagler and his corner had to be escorted by police officers out of the arena.
Despite Hagler’s victory, he was never presented with the titles in the ring due to the post fight incident. The British Boxing Board of Control as well as the British Minister of Sport have called this incident a disgrace.
With this win, Hagler began his supreme reign as the Middleweight King of his era. Going on undefeated for the next 6 years and successfully defended his titles 12 times, all against top contenders during this period.
