- In this explore, we visit D.O.E - part of Dover's Oil Mills tunnel and cave network!
The tunnels, located behind a quarried chalk face in Limekiln Street in Dover, are early 19th century in origin and were reputedly built by Napoleonic prisoners of war using earlier lime workings. They would have been built to provide storage, and were linked to a section of the Oil Mills tunnels to the west. Some of the brickwork is of a very high standard, particularly to the vaulted tunnels set back from the cliff face and to several domes which may have been roof lit originally via oculi
Within the main tunnels, steps lead down to a bricked up entrance to the harbour railway tunnel, beyond which a platform is believed to exist. The access passage was reputedly built during the Second World War to allow casualties to be clandestinely brought in from ships arriving from the continent. It is not known if this ever happened, however the tunnels were used as a public air raid shelter during the war, and reuse was planned in the early 1950s in the event of war with the Soviet Union.
The current name comes from a 1970s fire brigade plan and the origin is unclear (a link with the Department of the Environment has been suggested based on the initials). [Source: subbrit.org.uk]

When I was a teenager, 60 years ago, my friends and I used to go in these tunnels and explore . We never put any graffiti on the walls as far as I remember. Our parents never knew we were going in there. The Dropt Redout , the "Pill Boxes" along the western Heights that were lookouts during WW2 and all the moats were our playground; our sort of secret haunts. We only lived a mile away from all this. Great memories 🙂👍
Interesting, such a cool place! I’ve done other explores in Dover - also on the channel 😎
Thank you for taking us on that epic explore. 🤣 Those artists had quite a bit of time and imagination!
It was definitely a journey and a half exploring that! Thanks for watching 🙏

What an amazing adventure. You all tackled the tunnels and tight spaces really well. I couldn't do it, I'm claustrophobic. Always feel sorry for Ray because he is the less confident adventurer. Well done to you all. Xxx
It sure was a great adventure! We all made it through that’s the main thing. Thanks for watching glad you enjoyed 👍

What an awesome video! I I live here, and have slide down the same bank In the intro, I have been trying for a while to find the way into this system and chance you can pm me and help me out with the correct entry point.
Thanks! It’s near where we slid down. If you look you’ll see it as it’s quite obvious. They might have blocked it up again now though.
I used to go through these tunnels when I was little every way I used to go seems to be blocked or covered over I would love to get back through them now !! I found that place where you slid down a few weeks back when I went out looking and can’t remember where I found it any help would be much appreciated.
