Nirvana - Breed [Early Smart Studios Demo]

- 'Breed' An early recording of the song. Recorded at Smart Studios, 4/1990. Originally titled 'Imodium', this version has a much heavier overall sound to the one eventually featured on 'Nevermind'. It is said to have been originally written about Tad Doyle's (lead singer of fellow Washington band 'Tad') diarrhoea whilst on an early tour with Nirvana. Most of these have been converted from lossless audio .FLAC files.

Early versions of Nirvana songs are just so raw and sound so insanely good. Best bans ever.
Dude this chan is one of my favs. Been coming back for years
I prefer this version. Kurt's voice is beefier, the drums are insane, the guitar has a sharp sound.
1990 was such a great year for Nirvana while Kuwait was getting invaded at that time.
@@realcritical-kr2dd Weirdo
You audiophile you
@@realcritical-kr2dd WTF does that have to do with anything?!
Yeah, it has its strengths. The album version is great, though. It has a lot more momentum and that fuzz tone on noveselic's bass is just incredible. Like everything else on Nevermind, it's candy-coated and polished to the max, which I love.
I prefer all the drummers of Nirvana, yes that’s possible too.
omg no way!!!
What???? I thought you needed to hate one to like the other????
@@brandonkim2410 xd
Wow, Chad did really well on this demo!
saiDOWN not chad it is Dave grohl
Shelley Hindle No its from the smart studios session in 1990, Which was the session that drove Krist and Kurt to kick Chad out of the band
Shelley Hindle it is Chad
Shelley Hindle no this is chad, chad was the original drummer for this song
@@shelleyhindle9459 Dave didn't join the band until around Sept-Oct
the drums sound sick
Big up Chad ♡ massive respect
This is my favorite Breed version, the 1989 and 1990 live versions are the best too,Chad Channing totally captures the intensity of the song with his drums style,I love him,my favorite Nirvana drummer
Yes. He is better than Dave Grohl
@@jamesbarker7788 nah
Live at the paramount >>>>
@@arleteribeiro4209 Don't compare the studio version and live version its different tho.
@@jamesbarker7788 GTFO of here! Grohl came up in the D.C. Hardcore scene. He was a beast on the drums. Channing was ok, but not great. A much less experienced and energetic drummer. Without Grohl, Nevermind would never have blown up. He brought the momentum that gave the songs that hardcore edge that appealed to so many people coming from the punk and hardcore scene. His intro on Teen Spirit is legendary and, along with the opening guitar riff, is what really broke the song and the band out. Channing could never have pulled off what Grohl brought to Nevermind.
It's nice to hear Kurt's voice out front in the sound mix and love the band photo.
Powerful stuff. So much energy.
I was looking for this. Finally I found it!😃
One of my favorite nirvana songs. The fucking energy and tone of this song is absolutely magical. Never heard anything like it.
I think one of their best preformances of this song was at the paramount
That one and 1991 paradiso. If you haven't seen that one yet you would love it!
Don't compare the studio version and live version its different tho.
@@haikall7368 imo the live ones are way better. like its a good song in general but i prefer listening to the live version over the one on Nevermind, its way more raw.
23/24 year old Kurt's voice was so powerful.
This version is called "Immodium"
It says in the description mate
Tad
This is the best version of Breed I've ever heard.
Sounds like manson/spooky Kids early 90s sessions
Bruce Artur Nirvana definitely heavily influenced Marilyn Manson.
No
The sound and tone of the instruments yes but they wrote very different music
This is definitely the best version. Love the guitar tone and the vocals are better
Chad Channing was really underrated by Kurt. He is a Great Drummer.
Great drummers have perfect timing.
Chad wasnt a bad drummer but he had timing issues. You can cleary hear it in parts of this recording
@@elizaely5428 This is definitely not true at all. Sure it's important, but it's way more about feel and groove than just timing. Just look at John Bonham or Dave Lombardo, they were known for having pretty inconsistent timing, yet it somehow worked very well for the music, and kept it feeling human. Chad sounded fine, I see drumming more as something to keep the band together, and not a bunch of counting to keep things perfect
Kurt said he was a good drummer, just didn't fit in with nirvana
I don't think so. Kurt said "Chad is out of the band. We'll miss him.", which does not sound underrating to me. Dave was just more appropriate for the job, that's all.
I love Kurt's vocals here, great demo
I LOVE this !
Dave’s way more smooth, Channing always has this choppy feel to his rhythms
Agreed I do like the choppy sound tho
Wtf does choppy even indicate
Chad Channing was much more on the dark side then David Grohl and it is sorely noticeable.
Facundo Martinez Amen, mate!
chad was definitely heavy handed with the sticks..
There is a reason the dude got kicked the fuck out of the band .. watch radio friendly unit shifter from the live and loud concert. Chad couldn’t do that to save his life ..
@@adamdavis4417 , Dave Grohl was a great drummer, and thats it...calm down...
Chad was very creative in drumming...he made this drum piece him self, his drumming gave randome suprises or very awesome hidden details.
I love the way he had no groove in his drumming...you have to find a groove to feel the groove when he played...
Dark side?
2:04 scared me
Tara O'Reilly why
inFamousPlays YT the feedback when the solo starts is kind of loud
Grunge
I love 😋
1.25x makes it punk
0.75x makes it AIC-esque
omg ur right
I loved, cause i love all things they done!
awesome version
This is the best song on Nevermind and it's funny that the worst version of the song is the album version.
I saw Nirvana play this live a couple times in 1989 and it blew this away. I do like this version better than the Nevermind version though.
I think the same, this version is far better than Nevermind's
@@lorantkamen3198 yeah 1990 was such a good year for Mr. Kurt while the third world country was falling apart (soviet union) and then an invasion of Kuwait (the gulf war)
I fucking love this demo.
;) excelente!!!!
Amazing
Smart Studios was great
I Love this song
I love you Zilderist.
First time I heard this version was on a bootleg compilation titled "grunge is dead". Definitely recomend giving it a listen!
I know Chad was sloppy sometimes, but goddamn you can't say he was a bad drummer.
YES
I prefer this version because this is the version I just heard.
I like it
i wish I could find a high quality rip of this, the official anniversary deluxe edition is missing the guitar part on the verse, i guess they changed it for some reason.
yes, Chad got a lot better around the time this was recorded....
Fucken love this song!!
i like this version. *9*
pretty cool.
This song used to be call "immodium"
Yes\m/
DAMNNNB
Chad is a total Chad on this track.
The best band to ever fucking exist. Bite me.
We can have it all honestly sounds better than I dont even care imo
Damn. Dave slick copied everything Chad did. Which begs the question...why did they dump Chad?
Dave didn't "copy" everything Chad wrote, he took it, improved it and put his own style into the foundation that Chad left. Oh and Dave hits harder..
Kurt wanted a more harder and angry sound. So Dave.
RiV but chad has a heavier sounding drum set and he still hits hard
Dave did not copy Chad, Dave and Chad both listened to Kurt. Kurt heard drum parts in his head and told them what he wanted to hear. Also Dave is clearly a more solid, looser, and experienced drummer than Chad.
According to Kurt Dave had perfect Metrodome timing like Kurt himself. Dave Grohl during the rock hall of fame Inauguration did say he didn't do much but copy the previous Nirvana drummers
Jul..jul..jul
U are the best
every single demo or alternate take they did is as good or better
cool
I think that druming in this is pretty good. Sounds better.
Its a different drummer
Fuck amazing sound great nirvana i love song
great sound he has to him playing.....the difference with dave and him is dave has to hold his sticks upside down to get his sound while he holds them the right way round
What are your sources on the upside drumstick thing?
if you watch the videos of nirvana on stage with dave grohl playing you'll see he holds his sticks upside down yet if you watch footage of nirvana practicing with channing in the bedroom when nirvana started out you'll see he plays with them the right way round
dave holds his left hand stick upside down SOMETIMES. it's for a consistent rim shot, it's a common trick that engineers will commonly make you do in a studio. dave understood this and took advantage of this, there's nothing wrong with it.
The guitar in this demo sounds sooo good, it's a shame they cleaned it a lot in the final mix
rough and powerfully thrashing as shit
Chad is the man
Why do I keep hearing chad play negative creep on the drums
I prefer this version..the drum great
If breed was on bleach 😌🖤
Fun Fact : This song was originally called Immodium.
nirvana is the best
is a little bit slower version
but as cool as the original one
put it at .5 and it's a sick sludge tune
.5 what?
0.5x speed
sounds like shit at half speed
Sappie1 .75 is better
Ahh yes Immodium
best breed version is on MTV Live and Loud
svvedge na Paramount
Don't compare the studio version and live version its different tho.
Where'd you find this?
This is punk!
Chad can't keep time. that's why they got rid of him Dave was like a metronome and understood dynamic's and never lost a beat.
Butch Vig brought in a click track for Dave to keep time on Nevermind.
Every Nevermind demo that Chad was on is better than the version with Dave.
Shut up
You people are on drugs. Chad sucked. There is a reason he was kicked out of the band folks ..
i hate to say a negative word about chad because he seems like such a nice guy, but he dragged tempo and rushed his left hand to keep up. his fills were sloppy and he didn't hit with consistency and nuance. there is definitely a reason they got dave, because dave sits in the pocket perfectly, he adds that energy that nirvana needed. with chad they basically sound like a generic garage band, when coupled with dave though, they sound like rocks next biggest thing.
It makes sense that the title Immodium might have been about diarrhea, but the song clearly isn't.
Can someone give me the lyrics of the song?
yes please
Dave wasnt playing on this track big difference
you should listen to the whole album. Honestly nirvana is practically a religion. One tune just as good as the rest (unlike a LOT of albums).
I think its safe to say nirvana fans shuffle through favorites lol
technically the word Nirvana is from religion(s) so that makes sense lmao
1:17 ups jaja
Who is chad
Shelley Hindle Chad Channing was the Drummer on the Bleach Album and the Drummer before Dave grohl
And better than Dave Grohl
Hes on the right in the picture
The dude in the picture for this video
Hands up if u only found this song cos of the sleep drumming baby. Tune though
fuck that i just let it play

That's the lyrics of the final version, the lyrics on this are kinda different.
Everyone praising the drums in this version likely don't know that this was Chad Channing and not Dave Grohl. Channing's playing by this point had improved greatly and he wrote most of the drum material on Nevermind and barely gets any credit
Wooooow listen "ghoooooost" 0:50

I like the album version better, much faster and just as intense.
Infest the
I just hate this version "Immodium"
No Dave Grohl=No real sound of Nirvana!!!
I slightly disagree
I completely disagree.
Yeah Nirvana could have become Just as Famous without Dave Grohl . I think Chad Channing is Cooler.🕶
@@jamesbarker7788 Definitely. Chad was also becoming better as a drummer at this time, and by 1991, he probably would've been just as good as Dave, just with his own sound.
@@featheryfemme Yeah I'm not nessarcily dissing Dave Grohl but theres something bit phoney about Him. Not quiet Real or Belivable. Hes ok . But He just doesn't quiet seem to have that Knack that Kurt Chris Chad and the other Guys had. I think Chad Channing is a little bit more Cooler and belivable . And Natural. I wonder what could have been if He had stayed on in Nirvana?
