They made it into an executable, not a mod for sonic mania. They just used the same engine that was used while creating sonic mania. Since the game is not a mod, but rather its own thing, you have more freedom to create whatever you want, rather than being stuck to how a game looks, feels, plays, and so on.

They actually gave the background multiple layers of parallax scrolling, vibrant reds for the trees, the leaves falling when interacting with the bushes, nice hollow and dark interiors for the trees, and even some decorative candles. All very nice touches. What most recreations tend to miss is that wood zone's art was only halfway finished before it got scrapped. It was never going to be just that bland, flat background and no additions to the foreground. So I appreciate hacks that go further than what we saw in simon wai. very well done.

Most of the delays were from certain members trying to gatekeep everything, going so far as to try to insert malware into the game to make sure only THEY could access the assets and modify the game. As for this game, it's literally copying assets from Sonic 2 HD (the version AFTER the malware was removed and that person was removed from the team) and that's it. And ahh yes the "If you can't do the exact same thing then your criticism is invalid" excuse to try and shut down criticism.

Why do I feel they should continue working on this. It feels like they just a bit away form completion. Every zone sprites are done. If anything knuckles and ray and mighty sprites remain untouched which everyone if fine with. Because everyone would play as sonic first.
Theres actually a WAY to beat sand shower acts 1 and 2, and metropolis act 1 without debug. Which requires the "aux" button. It basically inverts gravity. You should be able to find it in the options menu while setting your keybinds/ button inputs. This makes both of these stages possible since theres a goal post at the end of the level with some platforms. As for metropolis act 2, not possible, its possible to get to the end when you do the aux in certain areas, but i couldn't find a signpost ot animal capsule. Sky chase, not needed since its fully functional, just has no enemies. Works on winged fortress. While death egg act 1 works normally, you'll need to spawn a signpost or an animal capsule in act 2 to progress. I haven't covered protopalace -> to holiday hill since i was getting tired anyways, you could've used the level select by pressing "esc" but i wanted to share my knowledge, even though it possibly maybe useless. it look good just wish all the sonic hacks games worked on real hardware aka megadrive/genesis for those in usa ! i still never know why some parts of the world it was megadrive and others genesis , genesis sounds way better lucky for some people
theyre placeholder frames usually in art people would draw out the base in a few colors then go back and add more shading they didnt get to shade in all of the frames
