'Ukraine is simply the first battle': Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark interview

  • Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander Wesley Clark told DW that he was "surprised by the ineffectiveness of the Russian military" in Ukraine. "The Russians have proven themselves a relatively inept force," he said. Clarke said "any negotiations will be determined by the outcome on the ground, [which] is determined by the resistance of the Ukrainians" and that NATO should increase its support to Ukraine by giving it "javelins, stingers and as much anti-air and air support as is feasible to do." Clark added that although it wasn't possible to establish a "legalistic" no-fly zone in Ukraine, "air support can be provided by nations who are willing to go in."
    When asked if NATO air support could lead to further escalation and the outbreak of a third world war, Clark said "if we fall back and are intimidated by Mr. Putin's threat of nuclear weapons, if there's nothing we can do to help Ukraine, then we'll be dealing with the next crisis on NATO's territory itself."
    "Escalation by Mr. Putin is not solely under the control of NATO," Clarke said, adding that Putin may decide to escalate regardless of NATO's actions. Clarke said that, although Russian forces were currently "checked" on the ground by Ukraine, this could change quickly as Russia ramps up bombing and shelling of population centers. Putin is "trying to steal Ukraine as quietly and quickly as he can," Clark said. "But he will use massive firepower if necessary."

      There's this type of journalism, popular in Britain and Europe, where the interviewer knows ahead of time which quotations she wants, and pushes until she gets them.
      Here is her "quotation shopping list":
      1. Get Gen. Clark to graphically describe the pain and suffering of people in bomb shelters. (Empathy bonus.)
      2. Get Gen. Clark to use cite his experience in Kosovo to undermine Nato's current position. (Pathos bonus.)

    First of all this interviewer is bit either impatient or rude. I always had great respect for the General Wesley Clark because his view points with military issues are very well taken with direct to the point presentations and with this interview as well. As I had served in the U.S. military service, I fully understand his view with Ukraine crisis. As he indicated overall leadership in conflict is one of the key importance. My father served during WWII in the Pacific theater, landed in Japan as U.S. occupation forces during Gen. Douglas MacArthur's leadership period whom took in charge of Japan. My father also fought Korean War during early 1950s. He often told me what General MacArthur believed in leadership. Russians (Stalin) declared war against Japan just about one week before the end of WWII despite both nation had non-aggression pact signed and invaded 4 northern islands off Hokkaido. Even to this date, Russia still occupies them. Gen. MacArthur was asked by Russian general that Russia wanted to invade Hokkaido and take overHokkaido as well as to advance further down to main Honshu islands for occupation. But with the great leadership of Gen. MacArthur, he told the Russians to Keep your hands off or else. Just imagine if there was no such great leader as Gen. MacArthur that time, almost 50% of Japan would be under Russian control.
    This is why we need strong leader with Ukraine crisis who will steps up and stands up to face the Russian aggression, rather than making excuse after excuse. When Gen. MacArthur was in charge of Korean War before he was dismissed by President Truman at Wake Island for insubordination, he made up his mind to cut off North Korean forces by making the so called impossible landing at Inchon bay, Inchon landing. Majority of members and politicians opposed him from doing it because Inchon harbor experienced tidal problem which makes landing very difficult. But Gen. MacArthur did not hesitate. He was determined with his great courage to cut off North Korean forces at any cost by making that impossible landing at Inchon. And he plan did succeeded. Once he cut N. Korean forces, they were pushed up across 38th parallel and further into N. Korea. Another thing Gen. MacArthur wanted to complete was to annihilate N. Korea and advanced into China with atomic Bomb. But As President Truman was concerned, he was exceeding the authority, therefore he was subsequently relieved of his command at Wake Island by Pres. Truman. What we need with Ukrainian crisis is a strong leader with determination to win, not to hesitate or making more excuses. Gen. MacArthur believed in one thing with conflict. He always stressed "there is NO substitute for victory." He even stated this at his last speech to the U.S. Congress as well as at West Point. My father also told me to take the enemy, we must go to the source of conflict. With Vietnam war, he was saying Gen. MacArthur stressed if U.S. is involved, then U.S. will own it.
    I don't also believe in excuse after excuse because I served in the military service over 20 years, even participated in the first Gulf War for extended period with the Marines and I know when soldiers are called to fight the war, to win and not to lose. I fully understand how Pres. Zelensky of Ukraine feels, he and Ukraine needs more help now and not next month. I don't wish to hear more excuse after excuse, face the Russians at any cost and be victorious. As they say, those hesitate are loser. And once Russians occupies any territories, the past history indicates they will never return them. With Russia, it is always a one way tactic, take everything they can but never in return. I hope NATO and U.S. leaders understand this Russian doctrine.

    This is a salted general, with battle experience. His absolutely right - we either cower in a corner hoping Russia will not beat on us, or we show strength and resolve. Putin is convinced we will cower and that is exactly what we doing. This General is correct - this battle is about showing resolve to defend democracy and rule of law. Putin has shown utter disregard for rules of engagement set out in the Geneva Convention. If we do nothing but sit and hope for the best, Putin wins and wins big. What's needed right now is tanks and heavy artillery set up along Ukraines southern flank within NATO territory. The west must answer Ukraines call for air defence and enforce a no fly zone of Ukraine. The Russians must be driven back, or we will be paying an even heavier price. Putin will take the current stance shown by the west - that of fear - as a signal to ratchet up his plans to reclaiming as much of ex-Soviet geography as he can muster. Putin's intent is settling old scores - as he was deeply embarrassed and angered by the fall of the Soviet Union. We simply cannot allow Putin redevelop a second Soviet style Russia.

      I think he wants NATO to send in air assets, which is why he said "legalistic no-fly zone" is impossible. It sounds like he thinks they should "practically" defend Ukraine's airspace, but cannot opine that directly because of the political and strategic complications. He said that "no-fly zone" is not possible, rather than that direct support is impossible. Everything about what he said suggested to me that his preferred course would be greater direct support, which is why he referred to Putin's ability to unilaterally escalate regardless of NATO activity and his certainty that subsequent conflicts would ensue directly with NATO if Russia wins Ukraine.

      No, actually, he's not. Right now is a real good time for you to take the time and look at the Russian Federation's armed forces. The idea of large Russian conventional forces is a thing of the distant past. Their ground forces are just over half the strength of the United States Army, and the Russian Aerospace Forces are also just over than the strength of the U.S. Air Force. This doesn't take into consideration the United States Marine Corps or any NATO forces at all. Then ask yourself just how the Russian Federation could raise those stakes when they're having such difficulty in Ukraine.
      While you're at it, you might take a look at the background of some of these ardent spirits who advocate greater involvement. Many of them have ties to either Ukraine itself, adjacent areas (in which natural gas has also been discovered), or the banking industry. Placed as they are, many of them would benefit greatly from western involvement in Ukraine with it's natural gas reserves. And if things go south? These men will either disappear or deflect responsibility onto someone else.

    • @mikechan231
      @mikechan231 Před 2 lety +2

      @@manilajohn0182 there aren’t many western politicians that advocate for more intervention. In fact, they mostly want to sit on the sideline and wait it out. They want to do enough so that they can say they were involved in a solution, but not enough to actually change the direction of this conflict. They don’t want to risk ANYTHING. They call meetings and come up with ways that they might piss Putin off. At this point, Putin doesn’t even have to make any more threats- these guys are doing it for him. This precedent is not only contributing to death and destruction in Ukraine right now, but will do so, with interest, in the future. The stakes will never be lower than they are right now.

    • @manilajohn0182
      @manilajohn0182 Před 2 lety

      @@mikechan231 You're as mistaken as it's possible to be. The stakes cannot possibly be higher than they are now.
      The Russians are in Ukraine for two reasons. The first is strategic- to preserve their strategic nuclear deterrent which is in danger of being eroded due to lack of warning time. This is because of NATO's eastward movement since 1999. IF Ukraine were to become a member of NATO, ballistic missiles COULD be placed in Ukraine which would give the Russians five minutes warning time, if that. Once the west deploys hypersonic missiles, that warning time would be 3- 4 minutes.
      Sure, we're not going to launch missiles at the Russian Federation- but the Russians don't rely on good intentions for their national security any more than we do. The Cuban missile Crisis took place for this same exact reason. The Kennedy Administration was unwilling to tolerate a severe degradation in the warning time of our strategic nuclear deterrent because of Soviet IRBMs in Cuba. This issue is not new. It's been brewing for a couple of decades now, and a number of high- ranking U.S. officials have opposed it- like George Kennan, Robert McNamara, and Stansfield Turner for starters. This alone made a crisis inevitable sooner or later.
      The second issue is economic and is why a crisis is taking place now. European nations rely greatly on the Russian Federation for natural gas exports- and the Russian Federation's economy relies greatly on exporting energy to other nations (approximately 50% of their GDP comes from energy exports).
      In 2012, very large amounts of natural gas (large enough to turn Ukraine into a major energy exporter) were discovered in Ukraine's economic exclusion zone and in Ukraine proper. Viktor Yanukovych- a close Putin ally- led Ukraine then, and this all gave the Russian Federation a solid grip on energy exports (particularly to the European Union) for some time to come. But within about 18 months of the gas discoveries, a coup (how about that) toppled Yanukovych from power based on allegations of corruption and a pro- western government (imagine that) took over. At this point, Russian control/ influence over those natural gas deposits evaporated. Since then, western nations have invested heavily in Ukraine. Once the gas is tapped into, European nations will be able to obtain their energy supplies (presumably at reduced rates) from Ukraine instead of the Russian Federation and Ukraine will benefit from western investment. And the Russians? Their economy will be hammered from the loss of revenue from energy exports.
      It's safe to say that Putin didn't engineer the toppling of his own ally so that a pro- western government could step in. It's also equally safe to say that the common Ukrainian people didn't topple one corrupt administration for another- because succeeding Ukrainian governments have been so blatantly corrupt that western loans to Ukraine have been conditional on the Ukrainian government reducing the degree of their corruption. That narrows the field regarding just who was behind the coup which toppled Yanukovych. It's not surprising. We've done it before. The CIA and MI6 toppled the democratically elected President of Iran in 1953 over oil (see "Operation Ajax"), and they did it again in 2003 to Saddam Hussein in Iraq over oil and natural gas (The Iraqis were not in violation of UN Resolution 687; they were accused of being in violation of it. The WMDs- which we said existed and knew where they were- in fact never existed at all).
      So, the Russians cannot allow themselves to fail In Ukraine. This is why practically all of their conventional ground forces are in Ukraine, and it's why their stated conditions for a halt to the conflict are to obtain Ukrainian recognition of the Crimea (where the bulk of that natural gas is).

    • @kr1958
      @kr1958 Před 2 lety

      @@manilajohn0182 I have a question - if this newly discovered natural gas was discovered in Ukraine, a sovereign independent nation (albeit at the time under the leadership of a pro Putin government), how would Putim/Russia have derived any benefit from it? Surely any export of natural gas from Ulraine would go into the coffers of the Ukrainian government and businesses. Are you implying it would have been controlled by Russian corporations instead, or there would have been some mutually beneficial arrangement, and now because there's a pro western government Russia has been shut out? I find that a little hard to swallow that this is Putin's motivation as Russia is one of the biggest producer and exporter of oil and natural gas in the world. Or have missed your point?
