Is Samurai Warriors 5 the new Dynasty Warriors 6?

  • For the last few weeks I've been working on a DW6 clone moveset + clone update video with the arrival of Dynasty Warriors 6 Special & Empires...
    But then I got stuck into making Samurai Warriors 5 videos, and the similarities were that distracting that I had to make a video on it.
    So here's the combined idea that has been plaguing me for the past couple of days; Is Samurai Warriors 5 the modern day Dynasty Warriors 6?
    p.s. the math in this video is almost definitely wrong

    I think SW5 is an interesting spin and it does show Koei's attempt to revive interest in the franchise by shifting the narrative focus to Nobunaga's earlier exploits. Previous games pretty much gloss over those parts because hey ultimately we have to get to Yukimura vs Ieyasu amirite. Overall SW5 felt something more akin to a "Spirit of Sanada" entry where it focuses much more on the characters and interpersonal relationships, much like SW4-II.
    Honestly, I genuinely wish Koei would step up their game for their next entry, regardless if it is Dynasty Warriors 10 or Samurai Warriors 6, and actually create intricate, handcrafted battlefields with multiple ways to accomplish objectives, potentially with branching IF stories which they already did an admirable job with in DW8. Hell I'd say they could even attempt something like a multi-stage campaign system where one single campaign consists of multiple conflicts with different objectives. For example, you take the Battle of Xiapi and break it down to 3 parts. You have the initial skirmish with Lu Bu's forces on the outskirts, then a battle to take control of the the floodgates, and eventually the conflict inside Xia Pi. They could make it so that if you somehow failed or chose not to control the floodgates, the subsequent battle will turn into a conventional siege battle with a higher difficulty where Cao Cao's forces would have to use siege engines etc. to breach the walls. The resulting battles then play out differently depending on what you chose and could carry into IF scenarios for future campaigns.
    No more flat open world bs with no concept of terrain or tactics whatsoever. DW9 will always be a sore spot for me with the extremely simplified movesets and frankly bland characters.

    Sorry, big one coming,
    One thing you have to consider for both games is that they both completely revamp the characters. Nothing is ported from the previous game, DW6 Zhao Yun doesn't play like he does in DW5, and Nobunaga in SW5 has nothing to do gameplay-wise with his SW4 incarnation. Now, on the other hand, DW5 was a clear continuation of the systems introduced since DW2. You could even say that from DW3 onwards, they've been recycling the old movesets while adding new charge attacks. SW4 also keeps the old movesets for most characters with overall minor additions. DW2 had around 30 playable chars with very basic movesets (you could only go up to C4), some being clones of one another, even in DW4, even though there are minor differences, Yuan Shao's sword moves are pretty damn close to Liu Bei's for example. With DW5, they had THREE games to build upon. Same with DW8, every character got their own weapon because half of the work had already been done in DW7 and its expansions.
    What I'm saying is, the reason DW6, SW5 and DW9 both have fewer movesets than DW5, SW4 and DW8 is because they have revamped the entire system and are starting again from scratch, while trying to keep a consistent number of playable characters with unique quirks. They tried to get around it by adding universal systems that allow for each character to still feel different in some ways (the passives and skills in DW6, the unique EX and musou attacks in DW9 and SW5, with the addition of R1 skills).
    I think for the sake of comparison, SW5 is actually closer to DW7. 7 got the same weapon-based movesets and it felt pretty damn incomplete at release, because it was a complete reinvention of every character (and apart from Pang De who came back later, EVERYONE RETURNED, they haven't cut a single character from the roster since that, and maybe they should, because 90 wholly unique characters at release might be a tad overkill). But in hindsight, this game was the foundation for DW8 (and even then, when we're talking about 8, we're talking about Xtreme Legends) just like 2, 3 and 4 were a straight line that led to 5 design-wise.
    Whether SW5 is more like 6 or 7 will depend on whether its systems will be kept and expanded upon in later entries, or if they will decide to go back to the drawing board once again. Keep in mind that, as far as Omega Force was concerned, Samurai Warriors 4 & co were to be the FINAL games in the series. Right now, the guys handling SW5 are a mostly new team that requested to be allowed to continue the series, and they had to make it their own. 15 or so weapons/movesets is not an impressive number for a musou, but at least they nailed them. I always felt that SW characters felt like they had a stick up their ass, even in 4. Try playing Kenshin in both games. OK, 4 has a stand and feels more unique in his design, but his moves are just so awkward in comparison to how fluid the odachi moveset feels in 5. These characters were great in 2005, but by SW4, they felt OLD, apart from the few new ones and those they gave special attention to.
    I just hope Koei will expand on the new systems introduced in Dynasty and Samurai because I think they're good, but like everything in these series, it needs a sequel to expand upon it. Of course, they could try to put that sort of "completeness" to the games from the get-go, but I guess it wouldn't make sense from a time/return on investment standpoint.

    @leonidkornienko7077 Před 10 měsíci +14

    You nailed it with some mighty interesting points, mate!
    I, too, think that SW5's downfall is not in any specific details but more in the general approach that Koei showed (has been showing for some time) in this game and a lot of others recently. Cutting corners and cutting rosters, cloning movesets which usually spells disaster for Warriors games, not making the effort to dub the game, launching ridiculous DLCs... Developers did a lot of things well in it, but SW5 just kinda went to show everything that is wrong with modern Warriors titles.
    Hence it ended up being an enjoyable but pretty forgettable game. I am sort of glad it was that short even though I enjoyed my time playing Samurai Warriors 5. It was much shorter than lots of other Warriors titles, no?
    P.S. Loving your vids. I never even noticed the flipped maps in different stages, this is mind-boggling!

    @JeffreyDavidson23 Před 9 měsíci +7

    I 100% agree with your video. I didn't realise until this how much cloned characters there were in the Warriors series. DW 3/4/5 were my favourites. I like how they all had unique movesets - it gave each warrior more character than just being a dressed skin (or clone as you say). This was why I too had started swaying away from the later DW - when they started sharing weapons. This was also why I wasn't such a big fan of SW5 - and LOVED SW4 because they had the unique movesets. I miss those. Would rather play SW4 than 5.

  • @yagyufgc
    @yagyufgc Před 5 měsíci +6

    I did enjoy Samurai Warriors 5 quite a bit, but the cloned movesets were kind of a bummer.
    If you ask me, I think the best combat system in any musou game that I feel would help to reinvent the franchise if focused on and designed around is the special skills from SW2, having abilities on demand that are unique to each character like Oichi being able to buff & summon allied troops or Hanzo being able to create clones makes you approach the game much differently from character to character.
    I've never been able to really say that I mained a character in a musou for anything but their character or because they happen to be literally broken (cough cough Zhou Tai), but since playing SW2, I can confidently say that I main Mitsuhide because I love specifically his parry ability.
    SW5 did have a skill system, as have other musou games, but they either lock you to one ability and that's it, usually something generic too, or they aren't unique to each character and tied to weapon like SW5's case.

    interesting video, although here's my personal perspective,
    I think SW5 is more comparable to Dw7 for many reasons, one of them being both of them are soft-reboots of their retrospective series with focus being telling on richer narrative, both still have some missing roster members (pange de before XL and Zuo Ci) and not to mention that their gameplay very similar, in that both roster moveset is more so tied to their weapons than indivisual characters being the ex-system,
    while DW7 had larger weapon variety, majority of the roster still shared moveset with some outliers, like sw5 the major difference between character is unique ex moves that specific towards certain character
    when it comes to DW6, I think I started appreciating certain elements like siege mechanics, General aesthatic and introducing swimming, I'm still not that fan of it but I'm much lighter on it now

    • @ryhankhanage
      @ryhankhanage Před 10 měsíci +5

      I mean DW7 and SW5 are pretty much opposite. DW7 reverted the cast back to a lot of their more tradiitonal portrayals from DW6, especially with movesets and expanded the story length. SW5 redesigned it's cast drastically and shortened the story length, SW5 has some good points but a sequel/expansion is sorely needed and i am surprised it has not happened yet

    Honestly, if DW10 came out, and most characters had cloned regular attacks, but their charge attacks were different (like in WO3U), I wouldnt even be mad. At least at that point characters would have more of a unique feel to them, and would allow the reuse of some animations. I think at that point, adding combo positioning like in DW9 while keeping the older combo style would be a welcome change, with quick map moves that knock down or in the air, and combos for each state. You could even have certain combo enders put the enemy into certain states, allowing for that "endless combo" feeling from DW6 while still giving the player some creative controll over their combo flow.
    Thats just an example, but there are so many small changes that you can do to achieve both the need to rehash animations and the goal of a unique and robust combat system, despite minor cloning.
    But yet, they keep dropping the ball recently. Haven't played a new warriors game that ive thoroughly enjoyed in a long time. 😑

  • @v-keianime5442
    @v-keianime5442 Před 4 měsíci +2

    A feature that SW5 has that I'm not a fan with and incentivizes clone movesets is the weapon swap/sharing. Back when DW7 and DW8 were released with that feature originally all character still had their personal weapon then you were free to swap to one you prefer mid combat. With SW5 it is more of here is 15 weapons pick what you want but it plays the same on every character you use.
    In terms of DW6 I really enjoyed the ranbu system. Although it really made you feel like you had to fight with urgency so the meter wouldn't reset. Which made some fights feel they were done to quickly, but that is more of a me problem. Still I would rather have the ranbu system then the DW9 combat, especially when you take the subtle QoL adjustments to the combat in DW6 empires.

    Clones are always a hard pill to swallow. SW5 bothers me a little less, but I think that’s because it’s the first SW game I’ve owned since vanilla 3.
    I do still play DW6 Empires. The maps, music, character design, and the added special attacks and effects are awesome, not to freaking mention the fact that you can scale hills and mountains by repeatedly jumping.
    I agree that there were huge missed opportunities with both. I really hope a sequel to SW5 come out, because Ieyasu and Hideyoshi would be amazing main characters, and I’d love to see some others make their returns.

    SW2 series had the best character stories; SW3 series had the best User Interface, they fell down on the sluggish combat system; SW4 Series had the Best Combat System with the addition of the Hyper Attack, Best Map I like it how it was so clean to me and the Best Fleshed put story of the Sanada Clan; and the SW5 had the Best Art Style and they fell down with the cloning. SW Games per iteration had its own strength and weaknesses so maybe in SW6 they will learn a lot of lessons from their previous games.

    Dynasty Warriors ended in 8/XL
    Samurai Warriors ended in Spirits of Sanada (4-4-II)

    I mean the gameplay is fun and has a lot of cool new features my main complaints are
    -It has almost a complete lack of any variety in strats, in the majority of maps there is really only one way to play them, which is lame, in my opinion every Warriors map should have at least 2-3 viable strats in how to beat it. I remember my fav thing with old warriors games was when the maps got harder and i would actually be forced to optimize and plan my routes in getting specific things done on time.
    -just way to many clone characters, personally im going to say a unpopular opinion because ima league of legends fan, so i have seen first hand what happens when game rosters get to big. They just naturally get repetitive for there is only so many move sets you can make before they begin to look similiar. So I don't mind if they lowered the roster, but the fact you lowered the roster and STILL have clone characters is unacceptable. Now if they wanted to do a class system where you can expect each class to play a certain way that's fine, but even if you have a class system those characters should still feel individualized, and fact is they didn't here. They felt like clones.
    -The graphics is honestly literally just a filter you can download online and apply to any warriors game, remove the filter and you get literally the same graphic quality from previous warriors games. Just warriors games have no excuse to look this ugly, make it look nice, you are charging us 60+ dollars, we deserve better.

    If DW5 was marketed more as Spirit of Sanada, it would have been much better .
    Then they could do another one based on the later wars between the Toyotomi and Tokugawa first starting with Hideyoshi, going to Korea( which would introduce new Korean and Chinese characters along with Hidetsugu Toyotomi) and then finally with Toyotomi vs Tokugawa in 1600-1615, which would have Hideyori introduced.

    My personal opinion on DW6 has always been: Terrible Concepts, Perfect execution on how to irritate your fan base. However!!! Whenever this happens, they generally come back with an amazing follow up title. For all the people who dislike DW6, DW7 was a beautiful game, which had a follow up great title of DW8 behind it.
    So, my only hope can be that SW5 receives the same backlash that DW6 received and that means that SW6 and SW7 will be amazing, must have titles.
    Another perfect example. DW9 had Great Concepts, just poor execution of a lot of the ideas. The follow along title seems to be DW Origins; which looks really good and I already have sitting there waiting for the pre order option to come up.

Just the fact that only Older Akechi has unique weapon and moveset, while both version of Nobunaga have to share with someone is in a way worse than DW6 or DW9. I assumed you would make a childish, bashing hate video about DW6 and obvious topic clone movesets.
    You proved me dead wrong, and I was impressed that you acknowledged the good parts about DW6 rather than what the community looked at the flaws heavily.
    DW6 might have not been favoured by the community and its flaws. I love this game as much as other entries.
    I wish KOEI should have reworked the Renbu system after the negative reception. It's already beyond fixing so here we are at.
    As for SW5, you recognized the purpose of the game, and the decision of cutting down roster. I am sorry to hear that SW5 let you down. I enjoyed the game for what it is. What it worries me is the next installment of Warriors Orochi aka. DW9 + DW5 game when?
    You earnt my respect.

      Thanks I really appreciate that! Yeah I’ve got no idea what Koei is going to to with Warriors Orochi hey, part of me thinks that after a long enough break, Koei would need to “go back to their roots” and release a bit more of a typical Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors entry before they can try to jump back on the Warriors Orochi horse and release a new game.

    • @victorchan1187
      @victorchan1187 Před 10 měsíci

      @@ReadtoFilth Definitely. Otherwise, they gonna have to scrap the main line Warriors Orochi, and they create a new crossover game if they were forced to use SW5.
      If they did so, then I wouldn't be happy with that.
      Whatever they do with it, I'd suck up my criticism and accept this is how they make decisions.

    Have yet to watch the video, however, from the onset: no. The differentiation and surprising addition of special move-sets while using different weapons for Mitsuhide and Nobunaga were a welcome addition. The monotony of Dynasty Warrior 6’s Renbu system was so abhorrently egregious. The repetition of primarily pressing square with little or no incentive to press triangle was so repetitious; no diversity. Never felt any of these feelings during Samurai Warriors 5’s play-throughs, and the weapon switch system is a godsend that maximally enhances and increases the variety-experience and potential, at least psychologically.

      Hey, it really just depends on what you’re after in a Samurai Warriors game. The gameplay feels smooth and the art direction is really cool, but personally I prefer the older games purely just for how much content is included in those titles. This one feels a little bare when compared to them.

    What still puzzles me to this day is that Omega Force already perfected both DW and SW with 8XL (Empire 8 got some REALLY questionable weapon changes which I personally didn't like on some characters like Deng Ai or Yue Ying) and SW4-II. All of the cast got their unique weapon already. Why did they have to be half-assed with DW9 and SW5 again? I didn't like DW9 because of how much of a technical mess and cheap of a game in terms of combat and DW6 BS experimental combat with clone movesets. However, WHY WITH SW5? The gameplay and combat are practically the same in SW4 and SW4-II but neutered. I see zero points when you cheap out the rest of the cast.

    NO, not even close...SW5 is 1000 times better then DW6. However, your not wrong to say that it has many short comings! There are many things I don't like about it, but don't go comparing it to an utter dumpster fire!
    I think the story mode and gameplay were actually maybe the best ever, its just that the number of maps, weapons, and characters was ABSOLUTELY BUTCHERED into non-existence! For example, Nobunaga Oda is traditionally one of the most fun characters to play. Well, At the start of the game he wields an Odachi, and he is an absolute blast to play as, but then later on he gains the Katana as an alternative weapon...IT SUCKS WORSE THEN ANY MOVESET I HAVE EVER SEEN IN ANY SAMURIA WARRIORS GAME, EVER!!! In fact, it goes on and on like this, honestly the only weapons fun to play with are the Odachi, Ninja blade, gloves, and the Blade+Matchlock combo. Most of the other weapons feel really lackluster!!!

      @KoeiKollection  Před 10 měsíci +1

    Sw5 removed Ranmaru Mori which is odd for a game about the Nobunaga Faction. Also it's way too easy. Honestly fix those things and it'd be great with the biggest flaw being no other factions to play as.
