Looks like there is an imposter in the house. If you see a channel called "Hit Me Up - Alone in Remote Alaska" that is not me. But I do thank everyone for the well wishes. Hope everyone is doing well, taking care of themselves and on the mend as well for those that have also had a recent injury - Alone & Kenai 🤗💛

My husband just walked in. He said the easy way to get the treads out is to cut down the center of the tread. He said they come out quickly that way. He is an excellent carpenter...even finish carpentry. I just thought I would tell you what he said. I haven't finished the video yet, so you may have done this.If you weren't so far away, he would be glad to help you. He loves wood working.

I've fallen down my stairs only once because I was wearing fluffy slippers without bottom treads; but I've fallen UP the stairs several times, because I was trying to carry a load of clothes, my purse, my water bottle, shoes, etc. So now, I use a small laundry basket that is only as wide as my body, and stuff everything inside of it. Much safer than having my arms so full trying to navigate stairs, keep my skirts out of the way, etc.! I'm very thankful you weren't more seriously injured!

I am a life long Alaskan, born and raised. Living off grid here in Alaska with injuries, illness, or disabilities can be challenging for sure. Kudos to you, you are one tough cookie. My husband and I are on our 60’s and live off grid on 10 acres in Talkeetna area. My husband is disabled so I pick up a lot of the slack of things he is not able to do and assist him with those he can. I also had chemo/radiation after a cancer diagnosis and surgery 2 years ago that kicked my butt for a bit but life goes on and you do what you gotta do. I still have to go in to Wasilla every 6 months for scans, which have fortunately come up clear. We make life work. There are chicken coops to clean, wood to bring in, snow to be shoveled and a mile of road that the borough doesn’t cover that I plow, etc Life goes on. God is good and we love our life 😊 Praying you recover soon with no problems.

About 50 years ago, I fell in a pot hole, while walking on a residential street in the dark. The pot hole was covered over in leaves (it was Autumn). I was leaving a party, where I had partaken in much merriment (of the liquid kind). I wasn't driving. The next morning when I awoke, I found that I could not put any weight on my left foot. It was Saturday, and a trip to the ER was in order. I had a non-displaced fracture of the fifth metatarsal. I was 20 years old. Didn't need a cast on my foot -- just crutches (which were terrible to use when going down stairs with no railings). I'm still a "party animal", but have not fractured anything since.

Thank you. Please be safe and best wishes for a speedy healing. Being a empty nester and widowed, I made sure when I lived with stairs to take them slow and sideways. Once or twice of bumm riding the stairs down 5 or so stairs, I learned taking more time to safely go down the stairs is the best way of not getting hurt. Besides, I would have disliked having to call 911 or my daughter for help. Now I have only 3 stairs and two weeks ago I learned how to do the splits, still nursing those pains. Take care.

There is a documentary on Victorian homes and how dangerous they were. They discussed stairs. If you are using stairs that are not perfectly spaced, you will stumble or fall. They then showed a video of a subway exit and why so many tripped was because there was a height difference. Our brain expects the next stair step to be even with the others. Have you measured the gaps between each step to see if they are the same. Hope you are on the mend!

Ohh boy those stairs in an old log homes are very treacherous. Some can be very steep especially going down a loft. We built (five) log homes on the Kenai peninsula. Pretty much every one of my family members lived in a log home. And I can’t tell you how many times a family members injured themselves by falling down the log stairs? Me included!! And there were 3 stairwells in our log home. Even with sand strips tack down…They’re slick!! FYI I carved all the diamond willow railings in our log home at the age of 14. So stinking pretty. But I am Praying for a speedy recovery. It is not easy being down to one leg when you live remotely. Big hugs ❤️‍🩹🥰🙏

The safest way to go down the stairs is backwards believe it or not; holding your hand on the railing, and is also gently on the knees 😊

Geez, what was it about the Tuesday before Thanksgiving -- was Mars in retrograde or something, LOL? I tripped on a completely flat braided rug, went completely airborne, and then went flat down on my face. It happened so fast I couldn't even put my hands out to catch myself. Unfortunately, on the way down, my left shoulder hit the wooden top of the fake-wicker clothes hamper, and only the fact that the hamper itself compressed (because it was wicker) saved me from a broken or dislocated shoulder or collarbone. Nonetheless, my left arm was completely unusable for days, painful, in a sling, etc. (x-rays showed I didn't break it, however). But here's a hot tip for you: I have some CBD creme (basically CBD oil in solid coconut oil) and if you rub CBD creme in well to ANY injury, arthritis, whatever, it miraculously stops the pain and helps heal. I have used it on several injuries, and this time on the shoulder it truly has stopped the pain/soreness and helped me regain function. Now, 10 days later, my shoulder feels almost normal, and I swear I thought I had permanently injured it. CBD creme even better than arnica, which I used for years. Now back to your situation: you MUST get a railing on those stairs, and hold onto it when you go up and down. Stairs are one of the most -- if not THE most -- dangerous things for people who live alone in a remote setting. I know that you plan to redo the stairs, but for now, you could buy a premade railing of some sort and fasten it to the to of the stair treads themselves -- a FLAT surface that you should have no problem attaching hardware to, as opposed to trying to fasten something to those logs. Please consider this for your immediate safety. You probably can even get something that will be re-usable when you rebuild the staircase.

Im sure 683 other people who actually care about your safety have said this. You need the longer screws . So they go through the tread and into the riser log below. It would be much stronger and less likely to get loose in the future. Some glue wouldn't be a bad idea also.

you could add a rug runner down the middle to add for safety and for decor, it almost seems like the steps needs to be even bigger for easier access going up and down and for safety, and they seem to be far apart maybe add extras, so re place them to be closer together, and add more that you would need. take care❤

Could you maybe try get a proper stairs fit even if you loose floor space , Some carpentry. Shop can make up your stairs in sections. It then arrives to be fitted together “ this is how I got mine for my attic room. You have to use this stairs minimum twice a day it needs to be safe especially if you have to carry things up ! Ladders are really for occasional use . Good job in the step repairs 👍 and you building up good hand rails will make a huge difference ( Wishing you a speedy recovery . 😊🙏

I am so sorry to hear about your foot. Sounds similar to what happened to my ankle. I tore my posterior tibial tendon (had to get an mri to see that). Orthopedic surgeon put me in a boot and put me on steriods. When I went back for a recheck he said I needed surgery or wear a boot because tendon tears do not heal. I gave it some time and it healed. I credit the carnivore way of eating that did the healing, and a hard arch support. I also had damage to the plantar fasciitis. 3 years later and all is good as long as I keep using a firm arch support. Speedy healing vibes headed your way!

    Hi Alone,
Plantar Fasciitis pain is real. I've been dealing with it too. At first I had a splint ( I didn't have to wear a boot) the Podiatrist recommended inserts for my shoes and a brand of shoes that has the arch just right to help with the pain and I have to say it works. The shoes are Merrell encore but they other shoes that work in the Merrell brand also Skechers Arch fit. When wearing those shoes, i have no pain. Whether its plantar fasciitis or a broken heel it takes time to heal. Let me know if you are interested in what worked for me. Rest up and get better soon! ❤

I think she meant she may have injured her fascia - plantar fasciitis is the inflammation of the fascia not the actually band of tissue.

Sorry to hear about your fall and I hope your recovery goes well. I was at work and slipped on a front door rug and ended up with a broken ankle. I am in the 9th week of recovery still wearing a boot and will be slowly graduating into a brace. Thank goodness you didn’t break anything. Sending you blessing and Thank you for posting.

January 2022 I fell down the last 3 steps at a vacation rental. I ended up with a concussion, a broken vertebrae in my back and 4 torn ligaments in my left ankle which required surgery and a month in a wheel chair. Please, please put a hand rail on the other side as well and better lighting.

So sorry you injured your foot! You should take anti Inflamatories like aspirin and or Aleve for the severe pain to keep the inflamation down. The swelling prevents healing. Being that you have trouble putting weight on it maybe torn ligaments or hairline fracture in a bone that would not be picked up on X-ray but would show up on MRI. Wear the boot then you should get ace bandage for support when walking and have it wrapped. I have been through many of these with broken and torn ligaments in my ankle and knee. I carry ace bandages where ever I go because I am prone to these injuries. These are always good things to have in the cabin. Because we dont want to think that bad things are going to happen but they do end up happening.

I’m just now seeing this, so sorry hope you were able to sleep downstairs. Also, if you can get one, a knee scooter works wonders for getting around the house. I do glad you’re getting those dangerous stairs lined out. Turmeric is a great natural anti inflammatory. It’s also is a blood thinner. Be careful sister. As bad as it was, I’m just glad it didn’t end as bad as it could have. God bless.

I would cut the step right down the center, you might have to make two cuts to remove a small section of the step then just pull towards you

Oh my goodness, I hope you better soon. Definitely not fun. I fell in August. My tendons pulled bone off. Or something pulled a piece of bone off. Anyway, my foot still hurts today so all my love to you. Take it easy. ~ Janet 😘.
