That was some crazy unforgiving, wind, and weather for you! I’m sure it is a relief to get into the hostel and be able to completely unwind! My heart goes out to you💗

Omgosh, I'm so glad you guys made it through MW. There's lots of articles about how dangerous it is to hike and also lists of the ones that didn't make it. I'm sure your whole body aches from climbing against the wind and the adrenaline, making every muscle tense up and constricting and preventing blood flow, which leads to fatigue and body aches. How did Leo do? I wonder if dogs feel stressed in those conditions or if it even bothers them? He's such a good boy and a great hiking dog. One wrong move from Leo, and who knows. But he's always looking back and checking on you and knows when not to pull or jump off trail. I bet he's also a great companion to have when you just need someone to release and cry all the tension away after a hike like that. Proud of you guys and big ❀ hugs to you both.

We also had super scary weather in the Presis. From Washington to Mizpah was the worst for us. (We were going SOBO). We had to take an alternate trail down from Mizpah when it was clear there was no way we were going down Webster Cliffs in that driving rain and wind. One advantage to staying in the huts is the daily weather forecast they have
.but by then you’re already there. Nothing worse than those wet, lichen covered boulders that shift! Glad you made it safely. Madison was a beast. We’ll have to catch Webster when we get back up there.

It was sunny but super windy when we went over Madison. They had closed the AT over it and told us to take a side trail. We waited in the hut hoping the wind would change. They finally open ed the AT. When we hit the top and hit the other side we could hardly stand. And kept holding on to rocks. So thankful to reach the treeline. Then enjoyed a Mama moose and baby at the campground.

From Grandma Gatewoods walk: Some of the worst weather on earth occurs here with winds of more than gale velocity and temperatures of polar intensity. Freezing weather is possible in mid-summer and a snow storm can follow hot weather within an hour.....the results can be overwhelming"

The Presidential mtns create their own unique weather patterns. It's probably the most dangerous part of the AT! Thank goodness that you both made it through w/o too much difficulty. Congratulations for being in Maine (by now) You've got it now Mike! The 100 mile wilderness should be a piece of cake..lol Hike on! 🙏Prayers for good weather, good health and easier obstacles

Another day in the Presidential's with Mother Nature showing you who's boss. I've been following hikers for 5 or 6 years and never saw anyone get pounded like that. Thank goodness you made it to the Libby House and can rest. How are Leo's paws doing? I would think they're tough, but these rocks are ruff 😉😉. Be well, be safe and thank you for letting us see the hard work you hikers have to go through.

Yep that hike down Madison is tough as remains tough even below tree line for a while with the steep slippery rocky conditions. You’re right people head into those alpine conditions totally unprepared. Unfortunately they keep search and rescue busy!

  • @jimscott2998
    @jimscott2998 Pƙed 5 dny +1

I could tell the severity of the potential weather by the size of the vegetation. With high wind velocities the vegetation stays low, when the weather is more moderate the vegetation is lush with tall trees and old growth.
It never ceases to amaze me that conditions can be so severe at such a low altitude. Where we live the timberline is 10500 feet, houses are 5-6 thousand feet.
I’m glad your safe and I’m sure the Presy’s will be a fireside tale for years to come with your advice a a rule of hiking for safety.
If only Leo could write or give his oral history😏

Curious - when you were at the Madison Spring Hut, where did Leo stay? Last recollection is that AMC didn't allow dogs in the huts. And I know what you hit - I got caught in a thunder & lightning storm, complete with high winds and rain, between Mt. Washington and the Madison Hut at, of all places, an area known as 'Thunderstorm Junction.' Scary stuff. Be well, stay safe. đŸ„Ÿ

The weather can change so fast up there, predictions only can do what they can do. Mountain Forecast (on line and an app) is better, but the weather in this area is still incredibly unpredictable. You're doing great, stay safe!

Osgood ridge is one of the most exposed places in the Whites. Its orientation jutting into the Great Gulf means that there is little in the way of the winds downsloping into the gulf. It’s almost always very windy there.

I remember coming down the Madison Arm, climbing down rocks, no “hiking” to it.
And we also met folks going up the Arm and had very much the same conversation that you had with those dayhikers. They were NOT prepared for that hike in any way.
And just an aside - is your wedding ring getting scratched up and dinged? My ring was a mess after the Whites with all that using boulders for balance.
