Gray beard here. Bedtime butter changed how I look at oils. A warm rinse followed by a cold rinse in the morning leaves a modicum of butter in there but enough where oil viscosity is less critical. Because of this type of routine, I've moved away from the heavier oils and bounce around from medium-to-medium light oils. But hey, that's me. Trial and error is the way to go.

Great topic and guidance. I have thin, medium, and thick oils in my arsenal. You then throw in the ostrich oil blends and other essential oil blends. It took me a couple of months to listen to my beard on what viscosity was best and blends worked for my beard. I look at beard butters the same way. Poured, versus whipped and then the butter blends make a difference

I’ve got a reddish beard with more grey coming in by the day. Also I’m in northern Ohio so the weather is dry here as well. This is a very helpful video cause I just assumed it was the different brands of oil making my beard look and feel better. I wasn’t even considering the oil thickness. I may have to reconsider some of the brands I stopped using. Fable is what seems to be working best for me currently and I’m really liking their scents

8-9" salt and pepper thick beard here, I usually only use the thicker oils in the winter due to it being so humid here in east Texas. My go to oil for the rest of the year is Beard Octane (thinner oil) and it works wonders for my skin and my hair. Even during the winter I mix my oils up, it's never just Artius Man. I'll use thin and medium oils also on a rotation, just depends on the weather and how my beard is feeling. Thanks for the great video Dan, love to see you spreading the knowledge.

  • @GaryBoettcher
    @GaryBoettcher Před 2 lety

Great topic, Dan! I use a similar approach regarding oil rotation but come at it from a "mix of everything is GOOD". I have several different "bases" of oils, some with emu, some with black cumin, etc.
I rotate through them fairly regularly to try to obtain a balance of all the properties. If I find that my beard needs something extra for whatever reason, dryness, too heavy, a little more control, I will use an oil that offers the corrective properties I need. That goes for the butters, too.
If I feel that my beard is "balanced", I go back to my regular rotation. The process will always evolve as I take on more knowledge and my beard growth status changes. I'm growing a long beard, so I have to always be prepared to make adjustments ... but try not to obsess!
As always, thanks for breaking it down for us, Dan.

I have a long-ish beard, usually keep it in the 7-8 inch range. My beard has a decent amount of grey in it. I find that medium works best for me, but I have a few thick and thin I put in usually at least once every week or so. I don't have a set rotation, but basically it depends on how my beard is feeling. I also try to use emu/ostrich oil at least once every 7-10 days.

4" salt and pepper beard. Arizona climate. Use mostly a thick Artius Man oil for more hold and that extra protection (sometimes even followed by a little butter or balm). Evenings light oil like Live Bearded for touch up when I'm home for the day. Sometimes I'll just do the light oil in the morning and go with it for a change.

I have a medium length beard with red and brown hairs and some other random ones. I have mostly used Beard Octane Oils which are thinner and they work great for me. Every couple days I through in a drop or 2 of straight castor oil in the the beard octane oil to thicken it up. This works great and is a good option if you are on a budget or just don't have a wide variety of oils.

I will try their unscented oil cause the unscented conditioner is amazing. Wes wy is also in my list. Whisky N' hardtack. I just wish to be able to try some new products everyday. My favorite Beard product oil and butter comes from Detroit grooming. You know I’ve used a ton of products that you have reviewed and I find good things about most of them however I keep coming back to Detroit grooming because it feels best in my beard overall all day long and of course at night. That being said I do use your ice Beard Oil about once or twice a week. In my cabinet I do have several fable beard oils, also whiskey and hard tack oil’s and maybe one butter from them. Again I might use another company‘s oil but it just never seems to do as good a job as Detroit grooming for me personally. Great video and a great reminder on the importance of how these products work.

Thanks for this video. It’s a lot more in depth about the viscosities of the oils and very helpful. So I’m about 6.5 months into a yeard and I have 12 different companies I use so far. My beard is red and it is medium to long length. I try to rotate all the companies. My beard loves Fable as well as Beard Octane, so either viscosity works well for me. The brands I have are Beard Octane, Fable, Artius Man, Ruddy Man, Luxurious Bastard, Modern Viking, Live Bearded, Whiskey N’ Hardtack, Furry Hippie, Detroit Grooming, Grave Before Shave, & The Bearded Mack. The brands I want to look into are Copper Johns, Bahawat, Wildschwein, WesWy, Bloombeards, and a few others. I love that you categorized them in the description. That’s a huge help!! Sorry for rambling, but this was a great video, and I saved it in my favorites. Thanks again Dan!! Hope this comment can help anyone else out with a similar situation to mine. 🙏🏻

Mr. Dan, I've been a looong time viewer. Like b4 5k... I have a coarse salt -n-pepper beard texture roughly 8" in length. I literally loose an inch in length do to its natural tight under chin "spring back" effect. Having said that, I've found that as my beard game grows along, I'm gravitating toward you thinner visco life as I'm not looking for hold as much as softness since it holds without anything in it. And living in the Northeast/ New England area, seasonal changes and weather/ humidity is a tough game. I've used primarily thicker visco oils in the past (ie Artius-full line -yes Invorgation too & Fable). I started out the oil game with HA. Which is often my go to on a lazy day, I've tried Magic City & Detroit and find the beard did not respond well to either. Felt like straw and slight irritation. Just tried some Whiskey n Hardtack. Jury's still out on that. I have a couple Dr. Nicks on the way. As well As Copper John's. . I find that if I'm searching for some advice on what's going on with the man mane, you're the 1st place I turn to. Thanks for the many tips & tricks!! I'd really love to see a video of all your collaborations! Keep up the awesome videos!!

It is about 90-95% grey, with some darker areas around my mustache, and chin.

I have a one inch beard, not by choice but because of work restrictions. Anyway, I 100% recommend using different viscosity oils depending on the weather/season. My go to for light oil is Beard Octane, Medium-light is Detroit Grooming, Medium-heavy is Whiskey N Hardtack, and Fable for thick. Anything in the medium range is good at any point, but it’s nice to have a rotation for specific occasions. Really goes a long way for beard/skin health.

Outstanding video! Happy to see your codes sorted by viscosity. Please consider making this standard. My beard is gray/white with some black, curly/wavy, not very thick or dense, 3.5 to 4 inches, depending on humidity. After the first one or two applications of a new oil, I can’t say I notice any difference. I’ve preferred thin oils since I started using beard oil and saw George Bruno advocating “super emollient” oils. Happily, this video has removed my concern for “optimum density beard oil”, as repeated and careful viewings let me confirm that all viscosities work with my beard and environment. Also, this video seems to have the best comments of any of your videos, maybe even the best in all of CZcams!

Great video Dan! Personally, I tend to let the weather/humidity make the decision for me. I live in Maine.. with winter officially here the cold air becomes much dryer, so I find myself trying to protect my beard/ skin a little more than the other seasons. I own mostly what you’ve listed as light viscosity oils and butters like B.O., Detroit GC, Husky, etc. However, I am constantly mixing different oils. I’ve become a HUGE fan of Bahawat and Whisky and Hard tack this past year!Phenomenal companies.. perfect viscosity and ingredients..and yes, that is thanks to you Dan and your reviews. I have more beard products any man needs and more than half just sit on the sidelines. Bahawat in particular has been at the top of my rotation. I’m guessing the castor oil has something to do with the amazing texture and feel in beard. The black seed oil definitely peaked my interest and played a role in my decision to try them out.. I even grabbed a bottle of their unscented oil to mix with some of my other go to brands. I have never tried Fable and only sampled Artius Man.. that was like two years ago though and I wasn’t craY about the scents I chose. I was also just beginning my beard journey at that time so beard was shorter and I didn’t have much to compare it to.. I’ll definitely give one a try when I use up some product. I have so many I worry they are going to go bad before I have the chance to use them all! All y’all who be like BAHAWHO? I would recommend giving them a shot. Dan has covered them a couple times now an gave his stamp of approval! Great value, unique and customer service is top notch!

My beard is between 4 & 5 inches long (measure from the bottom lip guys, not chin). I love Artius man & magic city is becoming a fave 2. I like medium & thick oils. Still haven't figured out what my beard likes (we're not on speaking terms) but I do now use a thin oil in my rotation (only cuz u said we should). I live in Houston & the weather is peculiar. Humid & Hot mostly but consistently changes (wet, dry, cold). My family is from Jamaica so I've been privy to castor oil since I was young. It's usually my go 2, but the thin oils do feel good in my beard. I'm a creature of habit, so my 2 year beard journey is an interesting one since I'm trying 2 find what really works for me

  • @angrywarriortacklebox42a32

Well my beard is multicolored lol, I’ve got red, brown and gray. So far since watching your videos I’ve really noticed that the medium with a thin oil every few days works well for my beard, I’m about halfway to the length of your beard and that’s my goal to grow it out to a similar length. Thanks for the info it’s been a game changer in my journey

I use Fable the majority of the time (gray!), but I do mix it up with Beard Octane probably once a week or so. I just ordered the legendary blend from Mythical Beards so I'm interested to see the difference with the emu and other "exotic" oils they use.

medium length gray beard (with a spec of pepper) I love Artius man, Fable and Beardbrand viscosity types. I do use a thinner oil at night typically Detroit Grooming or Grave before shave with an unscented butter (fable beard co. bar keep currently) That's what's working at this length so far. I do live in NC where the humidity can get rough in the summer but so far the heavier oil has been working just fine.

Mixed color black brown grey and a little red. About 7 inches in length and medium density. I use a rotation of oil thickness but probably get the best styling results in all humidity levels with medium oils.

I have a decently thick, red "power beard about the same length as a Kent comb, and living in the Northern Norwegian coastal Arctic.
I make my own oil, which is definitely on the thicker side: 7.5ml castor oil, 5ml dandelion infused sweet almond oil, 5 ml sea buckthorn fruit oil, 5 ml safflower oil, 3ml sunflower oil, and 3ml argan oil. I then use castor and sunflower to find the perfect viscosity.
I alternate that with just pure sunflower seed oil from time to time.

Hi, Dan! My beard is very thick and curly, dark with a bit of gray already. It's about 3-4 inches long. I'm still in the experimental phase here. I'm growing it since Nov. 2020. I used (i believe) medium to thinner oil. Some weeks ago, I bought 3 oils from Proraso: "Azur Lime", "Wood and Spice" and "Cypress Vetyver". In my opinion, they are extremely thick, and have a very heavy smell to it... I don't know, if I like that or not...
I'll keep on experimenting. But I live in europe... so I don't have that big of a choice

I have a medium length brown beard with red-orange mustache/goatee area and these hairs tend to dry out quicker than the rest of my beard, so I have an additional reason to have multiple viscosities in my rotation.
I suppose using butter more consistently on the red part would also help mitigate the dryness, even if I didn't always feel like using it on my whole beard.

    Dan,
My beard is red/white ( mostly white) 8 1/2 inches long medium thickness. I use a variety of different beard oil and beard butter combos. I use Black Rebel, Fable, Beard Octane,Chesapeake , Wild Rose Herbs(Wild Man) Kingsman and Bossman beard jelly. But I did notice Beard Octane is on the thin side.Haven’t noticed any better than another because I use the butter in conjunction with the oil except for the Bossman. The Bossman is a combination of both plus the just right amount of bees wax ( which I generally exclude from any products I use). Hopefully this is helpful . Regards.

I'm going to try some non US products with castor oil and I'd like to try the Grey Beard line from Copper Johns. But the best thing to do, as you told, it's to try and find the best solution for our beard and skin 😉

I could not agree more with this video!! As someone who has more of a red colored beard (roughly 3-4, maaaayyyybe pushing 5 inches in length, not too sure, haven't measured it, but I would consider it to be at medium length) I've been using a ton of different oil viscosities, but mainly because i'm intrigued by all the different companies products and scents. I can honestly say, in mixing different oils and even the butters (as they have oils in them too, for those that might not know) my beard has never been healthier or softer than it is today!
Also, another reason for that is because i've been watching Dan's videos almost religiously for months now. If you follow his tips/tricks/recommendations, you WILL have the BEST beard you've ever had!!

I definitely try to cycle between different oils throughout the days. I used to only use one oil at a time, but now I change it up. I have a black beard that's curly. I use a medium oil at night and I use a light-medium during the day. I feel that, overnight, the medium holds itself on my skin and in the hair better, where a slightly lighter oil during the day makes my beard feel much lighter and not as restricted. I, personally, am not a fan of super thin oils because I feel that they absorb too fast for my liking. I do know guys who love them though!
