- People say Leo Fender got it right the first or second time. But what about the Jazzmaster?
This Fender Vintera 60s Modified Jazzmaster is an interesting take on a classic Fender icon. In this review and demo, we take a look at an electric guitar that has given me a fresh perspective on my guitar playing and what it is that makes this guitar so unique and the things about it that didn't blow me away.

A Squier 40th anniversary Jazzmaster found me in a guitar shop and I haven't stopped playing it ever since. I'm using a BOSS GT-001 with a JBL Partybox 110 and my phone with the RE equalizer app. It sounds better than a Twin Reverb or Jazz Chorus amp. I love it and I can highly recommend it to everyone!
Great review! Just got mine, super excited!
Thanks so much, I'm really happy you liked it! Have a blast with the guitar 😁
Great choice on a new guitar my man. I'm a metalhead at heart but my Jazzmaster is my favourite in my collection
Thank you my dude! That's the thing, sometimes it's the ones that you don't expect that you enjoy the most. This is definitely one that will stay with me. Also man, if you like a Jazzmaster then I'll have a video coming within the next few weeks that I think you'll really like. Can't say more than that just yet 🤘 Thanks again bro!
Great, honest, practical review. Jazz me up!
Thanks so much mate, that means a lot! And welcome to the 💯 club 🤘
Love it, love it, absolutely love it❤
The jazzmaster is such an iconic shape but it’s wildly underrated!
I’m a mod maniac so I would put locking tuners and a roller bridge but as is, the guitar seems like an absolute strum machine💪🏻
As always your channel is bringing top notch videos and I hope you get more recognition soon, you deserve to grow because your content is everything a guitar player is expecting to see in a review video like this 👍🏻
Julian from Italy
Jazz me up!!!
Thanks so much man! You’re totally right. And a roller bridge?! That’s such a great idea. I’m gonna do that for sure!
You’re too kind mate, I really appreciate the kind words and support. It means a huge amount to me. Thank you for being here 🤘🙇🏻♂️
Thanks for your review! It helped me to decide to get one finally 🎉❤
No worries at all, thank you for checking it out!! I hope you love it when you grab one 🤘
The trick with getting the cut string length correct on vintage fender tuners is to line up the string next to its tuner, then cut at three (3) tuning pegs further down. End up having to eyeball the G; B and E can be left uncut. Enjoy your Jazzy!
Cheers Doug! That’s the trick I was using but like you say, when you have to eyeball the treble three and you combine that with me being a dumbass it ended up with pain 🤣 Thanks for watching mate, I really appreciate it 🤘
Great color on that jazzmaster. You are correct in saying that Fender got it right in its design because the feel is perfect. My only gripe is you need to unscrew the neck to adjust the truss rod. It makes it a pain when you need to adjust.
Thank you dude! Yeah, you're totally right. So far, I've not had to make any adjustments but I'm dreading the day that I do. Appreciate you checking out the video mate, thanks again 🤘
I got myself a Squier Classic Vibe 60s Jazzmaster during the pandemic on a whim just because I was curious of the shape and pickups and rhythm/lead circuit (plus ebay had some offer on where I got a decent discount). I've never got on with strats and was looking at a tele but once I'd seen the jazzmaster I gave that a go. I have a tele now as well but I absolutely love the jazzmaster, it's one of the most comfortable shapes and it's a real shame it's not as popular as strats or teles. Looking forward to seeing more on yours!
They really are awesome aren’t they? This has really opened my eyes to them that’s for sure. Thanks mate, appreciate you checking it out 🤘
I have no idea who you are and just happened upon your channel.
Really like what you’re doing and you come across dead well.
Nice one man - subbed.
Mate that’s incredibly kind of you to say, thank you. I’m stoked you enjoyed the video, I feel like an idiot most of the time 😂 Cheers dude!
I just got one, and I'm really torn about it. Like you said, the crystal clarity is amazing. But on the other hand, the hum this thing puts off is absurd. I don't know if everyone is immediately shielding their electronics, or just they just don't feel like talking about it, but this thing is a buzz factory. I'm surprised you said the pickups aren't hot, the whole thing seems hot to me. But I also don't play with much distortion. Either way, good video, nice watch.
I’m glad you enjoyed the video mate and I’m sorry to hear about the buzz you’re getting! I haven’t really experienced too much, there’s definitely some, but it’s been sort of as expected. I wonder if yours is as it should be under the hood? Who knows! Maybe have a look at the EMG J-master set to sort it out if you’re not against the idea of a pick-up swap. Thanks again mate and I hope you sort it 🤘
Maybe check for a grounding issue somewhere? Aside from that yes shield the cavities, I think that’s a wonderful idea on all guitars anyways
@@reneebear3641 I brought it into a shop to get shielded by a professional, and praise be, it solved the problem. I really wasn't expecting it to be that easy.
I definitely want to try one out. I played a Gold Foil Jazzmaster recently and enjoyed it. And that was the first and only JM that I've played. Trying to find a good single coil guitar, since I already have a great humbucker guitar.
I like this guitar a lot mate, they've definitely got a thing all of their own. Mines currently non-functional due to some upgrades that went slightly off 😬 but it'll be back and better in a few weeks with a video about the situation. Cheers dude! 🤘
Rad guitar and playing dude subscribed.
My dude…Thank you. I don’t know what to say 🙏 This truly means a ton to me. I’m just about to jump onto your recent course too!
Great video. I 100% agree! By the way, you can use a 90 degree jack to avoid blocking the vibrato arm.
Thanks so much mate, I’m stoked you enjoyed it! Your setup sounds awesome dude. And you’re totally right about the cable, it’s just that my main guitars will only accept a straight Jack so I kind of just have to deal with it 😂Appreciate you checking out he video 🤘
It sounds good and I get that it's good to mix things up. Different style guitars make you play differently. I don't think I could live with it but it's cool.
Thanks man! Nah, it’s not for everyone though I think trying different stuff definitely is. Your totally right, it is good to mix things up! Cheers mate 🤘
Cool brother..nice to see you constantly looking to expand and improve your capabilities..that's why you're great man..keep that forever looking to improve attitude and you're gonna do great things...hope the baby is well and you and the misses are happy and healthy brother. I have a new baby in the house myself..I rescued a 4 month old brindle Plott hound and pitbull mix and he's a handful..lol..but he's a good lovey boy and definitely daddy boy..lol be safe buddy...great guitar 🎸
Cheers my dude as always for the support and encouragement. It means a lot to me bro 👊 Family is all well man thank you, it’s a good time here right now. He sounds great man, hope is settling in nicely and all is well for you and yours. Take care bro 🤘
Great review, awesome accent and yes this guitar is massively underrated
I think the classic 50s look and some heavy rock is an awesome contradiction
Thanks so much mate, I'm really glad you enjoyed it! It's nice to receive a kind word about the accept too! Totally with you. I've got a bit of a mod to this guitar that should do just that but it's...kinda broken at the moment. Once it's sorted I'll be making a video! Anyway, thanks again and all the best dude 🤘
I have a 60’s reissue MIM with a Fender Blues Jr IV amp. What an awesome combo 👍🏾
Very nice dude! I bet that sounds great 🙌
Excellent demonstration. Mine arrives tomorrow, tobacco sunburst with a tortoise shell pickguard. I've already bought a white one to swap it out.
Thanks so much dude! That’s awesome, happy NGD for tomorrow. Good shout on the guard too 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars Hey, Jack - New subscriber here. I am far from being a metal head. I like space between notes! 😉
That means a lot to me mate, thank you! I can’t promise there won’t be more focus on metal here because that’s what I know best but I hope my stuff’s at least entertaining for you! I’m glad to have you around in any case, thank you again 🙏
I have a squier 40th anniversary good edition and I love it. Keep shredding and we’ll keep feeding the algo
Oh yeah Squier have made some awesome guitars! I’m stoked you like yours. And thank you for the support and checking out the video, I really do appreciate it 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars any time man, you got a patreon? Or discord?
That’s kind of you to ask dude. I don’t, I’ve thought about it but I didn’t really think anyone would be interested 😂 Maybe I’ll have a think a bit more on it!
@@JackTaylorGuitars you should man it would give fans a chance to support you directly and if you incorporate discord with patreon you could give supporters early access to videos, input on what videos you should make next and make supporters feel a part of the process.
I’m really down for that honestly. Talking to you guys is one of the best things about having a channel! Let me put some thought into making it worthwhile for folks and we’ll see what I’ve can do 🙏
Same freaking tuners on my thinline tele. I gotta agree with em. Blood was drawn by mine as well . Enough about mine. That's a sexy sexy axe man. Been looking at the J Mascis Jazzmasters for a bit.
Dude, they're absolutely lethal 😂 Got a new video about the Jazzmaster in the works and you'll see me replace the tuners in that! Lovely guitar though otherwise. The J Mascis ones are so nice! Thanks my dude! 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars keep putting out the content bro. It's great stuff. Looking forward to watching it so I will know how to swap, and what kind you recommend.
Always room for another axe mate haha! Just ordered a HB Gotoh Hardware SS frets Les Paul in shell pink for dirt cheap so that should be fun!
Shell pink Paul? Now that's one axe I have yet to see..🤘 sounds amazing
I know the guitar, nice choice man! They look awesome! Cheers mate 🤘
@@ericwarrington6650 Yeah man they do a range of glossy finishes but the hope is this satin one will age nicely and may even turn creamy like Randy Rhoads classic Les paul custom!
@@johnsiggers1682 that's so badass
Yeah dude, satin all the way!
That tort guard looks nice, but if you were going to change it up, a mint guard looks really nice with surf green and seafoam green
You know what, since I made the video it’s grown on me a lot 😂 Mint green would be cool, for sure! Thanks my dude 🤘
If you don't mind me asking, how did that tune-o-matic bridge work with the vibrato system? It's my understanding that the TOM is less than ideal. I've never played a TOM with a vibrato, every guitar I've played that had a TOM didn't have any vibrato system at all, most of them were either string-through or had a stop bar a little further behind the bridge. It seems like an easy replacement though, simply dropping a TOM roller bridge in there, or even a mastery if you wanna go expensive.
Of course not man! So, I’ve had no issues at all with tuning on this bridge. That said, I’m not ruling it out and have considered a roller or something similar. It just seems to make sense as a way to make it better. Thanks for checking it out man 🤘
Really looking forward to try this one... had a squire cp jazzmaster a couple years ago but I can't seem to remember how noisy the pickups are. How's that with this one?
Thanks for watching mate! Erm, the pickups were fairly noisy (they're not in mine right now because it's mid-mod) but I use a gate quite often so I didn't really worry about it too much. Cheers 🤘
Ive had one of these for awhile and its my #1. I pickguard swapped for a cream pickguard though. Pickups are def pretty hot but guitar is pretty bright. Usually have to keep my tone at 3 or under and thats my only gripe with it.
Glad you like it dude! I'm in the process of a few mods for mine too that I'll no doubt do a video about soon. Thanks for watching mate 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars dude ive REALLY been thinking about changing pickups. Any recommendations? Subbed. Can't wait to see the video dude.
Well, I’m going *potentially* hotter lol So my suggestion might not be what you’re after. I’m hoping to have the work done within the next few weeks. And thank you mate, I appreciate it and I’m glad to have you about 🤘
Jazz me up sounds a little dirty lol. I prefer the vibrato placement on the non modified Vintera JM’s and I hate having the truss rod access on the bottom of the neck, but the JM is still my favorite guitar. Eventually I plan to swap the neck and bridge to have a 12 inch radius and then I think she’ll be perfect.
😂 You’re absolutely right dude! Oh yeah, the truss rod access is not good. Your plans sound very good though! Thanks for checking out the video mate 🤘
You can’t find a more comfortable and ergonomically designed guitar.
Thanks for checking out the video dude, I appreciate it! I do love it, that's for sure! 🤘
Cool video man. The string tree damaged? or is the string just sat out of it? Looks gorgeous. Sounds great. keep it up dude
Thanks so much dude! Hard to say man, I don’t recall anything being wrong with it and it’s not got any strings on right now 😂 I’ll have to watch back haha Cheers again mate 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars More than welcome dude. Will sub to see what comes next. Looking to get a new guitar, I'm a Tele man through and through but want the shape but with a different sound. Wasn't even considering the ml3 pro until I saw this. Will find some more reviews on it for sure as you play a heavier style than myself. I'm sure those pickups would sound great through a more reserved distortion lol And you're right. That neck is the perfect roast. Really makes the body pop.
Again dude, cheers for the content 👍
I really appreciate that my dude, thank you 🙇🏻♂️ Yeah man, absolutely check it out. It’s fully capable of most styles I reckon. I’m just a metalcore dude in my heart 😂 I’m glad to have you around man, thank you again 🤘
I kid you not, mine just came in
Amazing! Congrats on the NGD mate, how’re you finding it? Thanks for watching too, I appreciate it!
@@JackTaylorGuitars same colour and everything, it feels amazing, i just need to setup a few things better with string height, and my tremolo bar is very close to the body so it’s a little hard to use, other than that it’s beautiful
Awesome man, I’m glad you like it! They’re sick guitars. Have a good time with it dude!
i love this guitar 🔥🔥🤍 im getting it when i turn 16 !! i got a song request with this guitar if you can ! the song: meddle about by chase atlantic
That’s awesome! I hope you have a blast with it 🤘 I’ll check out the song too dude. Thanks for watching the video!
You can play metal on any guitar. It’s all in how it’s applied.
That is absolutely true! But it is a bit like saying you can race Le Mans in any car. You can but it'll be easier in a car designed for it. Ultimately, I guess it depends on your personal preferences. Thanks for watching mate, I appreciate it! 🤘
@@JackTaylorGuitars yeah, I played thrash in the 80’s. A single coil can sing a dope solo if you gain the shit out of it. Or rhythm tracks. Almost anything if it’s done properly. Cheers.
@@sconni666 Absolutely, totally agree! Thanks again bro 🙏

The only Fender better than a Jazzmaster is a Jaguar. Love these guitars.
My mate has a HH player Jag and it's awesome. Such a cool guitar! Thanks for checking out the video dude 🤘
I stab myself way more with tuners where the string end sticks out. Once you figure out *how to use vintage tuners, they’re the fastest, easiest, and safest.
It's the coils of death vintage tuners create that get me dude. Give me locking tuners any day 😂 Thanks for checking out the video mate, I appreciate it!
Jazz Me Up
Thank you mate! Welcome 💯
Hell has a special place reserved for people who say no one wants to hear a dry, clean tone..
🤣 In that case I’ll happily take that place dude! Appreciate you watching man 🤘
"Look, mum! I'm on TV! ٩(◕‿◕。)۶"
Another great video and thanks for the shout out, mate!
Lately, I also find myself looking at offset guitars. There's one close(-ish) relative of the JM that I'm slightly interested in, the G&L Tribute Doheny. Unlike the Jazzmasters, it doesn't have the same vibrato system nor the front facing output jack. They have their own MFD pickups and the Dual Fulcrum Vibrato bridge. They don't exactly sound like a JM though, and those pickups has more output.
I'm not sure why I'm still allergic to Fender or Squier, maybe I'm just weird and prefer something slightly out of the norms. 😂
P.S. You missed the chance to play 'The Lick', just for the memes. Maybe that's a little too nerdy 🤓
😂 Thank you mate and you are super welcome! It means a lot to have you around.
G&L is a great shout. I used to have an ASAT and that was a killer guitar, such an interesting take on Fender ideas. Leo did some cool stuff over there.
Nothing wrong with liking what you like bro. Thanks again man 🤘
And I can’t believe I didn’t even think about playing the lick… that’s a fail on my part haha
Not underrated anymore, the prices have skyrocketed on both the Fender and the Squier versions….
You’re totally right dude 😂 It’s crazy! 🤘
Jazz me up
Absolute legend. Thank you my dude 🙇🏻♂️
Awesome shape, awesome feel, to bad it does everything mediocre.
Guess it’s a matter of preference isn’t it dude! Shape and feel are the most important things for me but it’s cool to prioritise other stuff as well. Thanks for checking out the video man, I appreciate it 🤘
No, Jack! NO!!
Don’t be talking me into a jazz master ya sod
😂 I'm sorry bro! I can't help it, it's great haha
that sound is gorgeous@@JackTaylorGuitars
@@JackTaylorGuitars ahhh you’ve gone and done it now!!!!
Not a fender, but I have gone for the squier Jazzmaster 40th anniversary in SFM and gold
This will have to be my first unboxing video…how hard is it gonna be, realistically, not to open it the moment it arrives??? 😂😂😂😂😂
Good shout mate! A student I had when I was teaching had one and it was killer. I’m gonna say very hard man, that’s why I don’t do unboxings 😂
