      Exactly. Let’s stop the narrative that children somehow deserve a mother and a father in a household because there are abusive households that have BOTH of those and are still terrible and not a place that you should ever put a child. There are so many “full“ homes that have this quote in quote loving family image that turn out to be terrible terrible terrible places for children. I keep hearing this narrative, especially in black homes that a child needs a father figure, which alludes to the fact that a mother should have some type of male by her side to help her raise a child which is not true single family homes get along just fine because they have the support system. All you really need is to show a child that they are needed, that they are wanted.

    I think KBS is putting her on the show to open up korea's mindset about single mothers. She might have chosen to be a single mom but other single mothers will relate to her as a mom.
    This will address the issue of kids getting bullied just because they had no father at home.

      I recall watching a show where a single father raising his young daughter in Korea was criticized. Kids made fun of her, the neighbours wouldn't let their kids play with her cause she was raised by a single father???? His wife had left them...this man was doing all he could for his daughter , to which he was a loving father! In western culture we give credit and praise a single parent that raises their kids well, in Korea they seem to judge and punish a single parent despite they do all they can to offer a great life for their child.

      many asian countries are still extremely conservative about reproduction. korea is particular also has a rough history with its children; post-war korean orphans (or abandoned children) is still a difficult thing for modern koreans to grapple with. the issue of single mothers who were impregnated by foreign soldiers stationed in korea abandoning their newborn babies in "baby drop boxes" (it's a real thing, you can google it) is considered shameful history and it's no wonder korean laws now are still very strict about requiring marriage before IVF. i don't agree with it of course, but there's definitely some context.

      I think you misunderstood. She was saying that at first she loved her ex so much that she just wanted to be with him even if it meant she couldn't ever have kids. But then she started thinking, what if in the end he fell in love with a younger women and broke up with sayuri, then sayuri would not be able to have kids and not be able to get married to him and she would hate the man she once loved so much. So instead she decided to break up before that could happen and choose to be a single mom through sperm donor.

    • @nebullae
      @nebullae Před 3 lety +54

      sayuri decided she valued a baby over the relationship (which could end if he changed his mind about children, so she was at risk of no baby + no partner if she stayed). i applaud her for her bravery in making that choice because i'm sure it wasn't easy, and raising zen herself isn't easy now.
