Is the X-Carve worth it?

  • Several months ago Inventables reached out to me to see if I would be interested in a X-Carve in exchange for my feedback on the machine. If it's worth it or not is your call but here are some of my thoughts to possibly help you make the decision.
    Get your Shirt on!! bit.ly/DITylerM...
    Pros:
    Potential to be very accurate
    Opens up a new dimension to making/woodworking
    Allows me to complete other tasks
    In expensive compared to other CNC machines
    3d carving is possible
    Cons:
    Super accurate seems a little hard to achieve
    Not super sturdy
    Huge footprint (for the 1000x1000 anyway)
    Takes a good deal of time to draw things that it will cut
    Easel file for the z-axis knob:

    I really appreciate these reviews. I like how folks feel free to give honest reviews instead of just praising the machine. No one would really expect a hobby or entry level machine to be perfect. It also sounds good that they are constantly making improvements over time.

      Gonna say what needs to be said! Very true, for the price I think this is a very good machine and it's easily upgradable. Easel is one of many software packages you can use to run the machine and it's constantly changing. Thanks for watching!

    Bought a 1000mm X-Carve for $1600. Beautiful machine. Tyler does a pretty good job of reviewing the equipment but a few caveats I'd offer are 1) the X-Carve isn't a hobbyist's, easy breezy CNC router. It's not plug and play. It's a complicated machine that I wouldn't recommend for novices or youngsters. If you don't know CAD-CAM and G-code you're in for a steep learning curve. 2) I was extremely disappointed with Inventables software. You can use Easel, which is only available if you have a reliable internet connection in your shop, garage, or wherever you setup your machine. The machine is noisy and dusty. The carver does not arrive with the software necessary to set it up, calibrate it, and test it as a standalone unit. Again you must go online with Inventables to setup the machine. There are programs from Vectric Ltd in the $700 to $350 range depending on the size of your machine. There are other even more expensive programs available on the WWW and if you enjoy practice bleeding you can scour the internet for bits and pieces that may be free. 3) The guys at "Customer Success" are pleasant to deal with but if your issue is software, they can't help you especially if you're a CNC neophyte because they don't have a solution for people who don't want to be tethered to the internet.. Had I known what I was getting into for $1600 I would have looked for a better supported machine.

      "...X-Carve isn't a hobbyist's, easy breezy CNC router..."
      I disagree. X-Carve and Shapeoko, both invented to rip amateur, hobbyist, unadvised people off, who blinded by real enthusiasm. Professional people use very different machines.When you buy X-Carve/Shapeoko you'll get excellent workmanship, good support, even better marketing for a huge price. And a very cheap and humble design. These machines were not designed by professional mechanical engineers, that was not necessary because the customers are not professionals either. You don't need any technical data, and parameters, of a CNC machine because it's not important to you because you are not professional, you're not interested. You can see the sizes and the power of the spindle, and that's it, enough.They say such things:
      "Accuracy: A properly tuned and calibrated machine should get to a resolution of ~0.075mm to 0.13mm."
      This is pathetic, a bold lie, even a baby knows that resolution has nothing to do with accuracy, and they can say this because (I repeat again) they sell this to amateurs. You can push any long rail of the machine with 2 fingers, and it will go down about 5mm in the middle. Your 5 yrs old daughter can push the spindle with one finger, and it will move at least 1 mm, despite she's a weak little cute being. And this is the 3rd generation machine, imagine the 1st one!The parts you get in the boxes are worth about 30% of the selling price, and they don't even assemble it, you have to do that, and you are happy with that!Sorry for the harsh words, I just wanted to explain how badly you are mistaken.

    • @jamesgotcher275
      @jamesgotcher275 Před 7 lety +1

      For sure I'm not an expert in the engineering side of the equipment nor the many other technical points you make. I'm a hobbyist woodworker and was hoping to kick up my game with automation. I'm totally new to CNC. I found the machine easy to assemble and IMHO it's sturdy and an attractive machine.
      My frustration is with the software. Once assembled there's no way to use the equipment without an internet connection. Easel is only available online which means the machine must be tethered to the internet to avail oneself of the 'free' software. OR, you can buy some expensive software. OR, you can take the time and effort to learn the software side of the tool and then find the bits and pieces of software for free on the internet. I'll have to spend time and effort learning more about CNC software than I ever wanted to know since XCarve doesn't ship with software. I'll spend much more time learning software than I did assembling the machine, when I have the time to mess with it.

      @jamesgotcher275 Před 7 lety +1

      $1600 is a chunk of change for a toy that won't work as a standalone if you're not connected to the WWW or running their $700 software package. In retrospect it wasn't what I was hoping for. Not X-Carve's fault.

    I've watched a bunch of reviews regarding this machine as I am seriously considering adding a CNC to my arsenal, but your review is by far the most honest, fair, and informative assessment as to what to expect. As most folks thinking about such a machine, we all get super excited about the vast possibilities ahead of us, however, nobody wants to make a shallow decision that comes up short no matter how affordable the price appears. Unfortunately, previous reviews have appeared somewhat biased or skewed, so my hat is off to you for providing honest and straightforward information in assisting with future decisions. Building my own cnc machine I checked the xcarve out was so tempted but if you're confident enough to build a machine you can get a lot more bang for buck.
    I've managed to build a frame from heavy duty T slot profile, get linear rails with sliding blocks, ballscrew drive for all axis, nema 23's, electronics for under £1k. Some minor engineering work and a 2.2kw spindle I will still be well under an xcarve in the UK.
    My build space is 1.3m*0.8m.
    If you've built a 3d printer do yourself a favour and build your own cnc machine it's not much harder just get the bits made by engineering firm if you're not confident (It's what I did)

    @09:57 Might be slow *but* it can still do almost everything the other _dedicated_ tools can you'd normally have in a workshop and if you're like me without a workshop and the other tools I'd still say being damn slow is still better than not being able to do it at all =)
    I for one plan to make one or two 1:16th Scale RC Tank models mostly done from Polystyrol Plates cut to shape using the X-Carve and, where necessary, complemented with 3D Printed parts coming from my Formlabs Form 2 SLA Printer.
    Can't wait to get my hands on an E-100 =)

    The X Carve certainly seems to be built to a price point. That being the case performance is going to be a bit lacking. The stepper motors in it, and the timing belts, are not much bigger than you might see in some standard printers. A higher voltage PSU, and better motor drives might go some way towards improving performance. But the whole machine might not be able to take the power upgrade then either. Because the rest of the machine is not terribly robust either.

    hey Tyler,
    yours is perhaps the best review of this machine i've seen yet. everyone else who got one of these things has had issues with it and i have been contemplating into getting one down the road.
    the one i would do with it is build a much sturdier and heavier base and for some of my projects i would actually have to double up the size of the table. from the looks of the hardware and soft ware it doesn't seem to be an issue and it should be able to handle it.
    nice job on the presentation!
    cheers
    mike

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  Před 8 lety

      +HolzMichel All the software is based on a home position that you set and not on the actual size of the rails. You can make it as big as you like! Glad the review was helpful, thanks for watching!

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  Před 8 lety

      +HolzMichel Saw your interaction with Andy from Glass Impressions, good guy. I do want to say that the x-carve definitely isn't all peachy. I was SUPER lucky that it went together with no issues and pretty much started up fine right off the bat. There are a few issues I had to work out but because if this great YT community I pretty much new the solutions to common issues right away.
      I have the 1000x1000 machine and I do plan on adding some support in the gantry to help with deflection as it't not as sturdy as I would like. You mentioned a better base, absolutely....mine is on a folding table so I don't use up a huge footprint and I have not had any issues with vertical accuracy yet. If you were making printed circuit boards or something you would probably want a more uniform table and waste board. If you wanted to extend the machine even bigger I would recommend that you don't make the X axis gantry any bigger than it is, extend the two Y axis rails as you can support and stabilize these on the table.
      After having the machine for some time now I really do like it and am glad I have it. Having a trim router as the spindle makes a monumental difference in cutting time (but you wont have to worry about that since the dewalt 611 is the stock spindle nowadays) and the cut time was one of the items that I was most disappointing in originally.
      Getting fluent with the proper software to make what I want to carve is till the biggest drawback but that is a personnel problem and not a tool issue.
      Good luck man.

    Great summary Tyler. Back in college I had access to our CNC machines in our metal shop and it was great. I miss having access to that kind of "digital manufacturing" capability. Much like you I think I would enjoy having a cnc router like an x-carve but can't yet justify the cost. Inventables, are you listening?? :-) I can see that for basic shape-cutting the bandsaw often wins out, but once you get into more complex parts with pockets and more precise interior features the CNC could be the better option.

    When the Shapeoko first came out I was chomping at the bit to get one but wanted to wait and see results from other users first. Then the Shapeoko II came out and now the X-Carve. From what I seen out of all 3 I still wasn't convinced, and the quality wasn't there. I also had been looking at the Digital Wood Carver or DWC but it was about 3 times the $$$. In the end I chose the DWC and I am SO glad I did!!!! I purchased an almost brand new DWC on EBAY at a great price and with a full size 2hp router I can go thru anything just like butter. And the quality of the carving is excellent. I haven't tried aluminum yet but I'm sure projects will be so much better than what the X-Carve can produce.
    I guess if you can get an X-Carve for free tho, who's gonna pass that up? I know I would have taken it but I wouldn't be happy with it.

Sure there are bigger and better machines than these two offerings, but spending that kind of money isn't how I want to get my feet wet.

    sounds like from your video that there is still several issues with this machine, for the money, that should have been resolved prior to shipping. These issues should not be part of the learning process for the user. He or she is interested in use, not repair or changing basic parts or fixtures in order to use.

    Be careful spinning the stepper motors by hand. When you do that it generates electricity which can damage electronics. You might not be able to generate a high enough voltage, but it's possible. Just an FYI.

    • @DIYTyler
      @DIYTyler  Před 8 lety

      +BeanHole Inventables has taken this into account and set up the machine such that if you move the motors by hand and it does generate enough current it will spin the cooling fan. You can probably still move them fast enough to over load but I haven't seen it happen with anybody yet. Thanks for looking out though!

    • @GlassImpressions
      @GlassImpressions Před 8 lety

      +Tyler G Yes free is good, but not always. Some free things in life are not good at all! With using my CNC Shark from Rockler. I have come to realize the Xcarve lacks construction. You cannot have a 1000 MM machine with the way that thing is constructed. The CNC Shark line that Rockler carries is phenomenal. They are built like tank and meant for heavy use. Yes, they come with a price tag and can't be compared to a Xcarve but if anyone is looking to purchase a machine.. save your money and purchase something with a little more beef than the Xcarve. Doesn't need to be a CNC Shark, but do your research and purchase something that is justifiable. I can't seem to do the math on the Xcarve.

    I had a cnc milling machine but all I knew was G-code and a person should know Cad/Cam and be efficient with it to get the most out of this machine or any cnc machine.
    If you don't know G-code or Cad/Cam you are not going to like this machine or know how to use it before you learn the how to program it.
