This song is about Stockholm syndrome. It was choreographed by his Japanese choreographer that did Move and Want. I think Taemin is the best overall dancer in Kpop in regards to talent, technique and performance Thank you for reacting to Taemin! Great reaction video!
FYI -- as far as interpretations----Taemin has said that he approached this as a track about Stockholm Syndrome. The lyrics are literal---being in love with a hurtful criminal....... He's incredible. the song is too---a most 'dangerous' piece.
Taemins idea is out of this world but the dance practice is even more intense. Pleeeeease react to this. And lastly you definitely have to react to taemins move mv it is a national treasure. The choreography for 2 kids was actually freestyled, he’s so amazing and talented ❤️
The entire Never Gonna Dance Again Trilogy is literally about himself, his identity, his meaning. Starting off with 2Kids in which he freestyled almost everything tells us a story about the beginning of his struggle. And we move on to Criminal which is based on Stockholm syndrome concept where he is trapped in his own self-made prison and shackles. The criminal is basically himself, the identity he has built which can be detrimental if he's too complacent. And the final piece of the puzzle, the song, IDEA which was inspired by Plato's theory of form shows him struggling to really find his true self. The contrasting images of hell (derived from his identity in Criminal) and heaven, a place where most people desire to be in really portrayed his inner conflicts and confusion. And towards the end, he finally broke free from his self-made prison, and found his real identity which became is IDEA.

One of my favorite Taemin choreography is Press Your Number and Drip Drop. You should definitely check his group SHINee as well.
For me Taemin is probably the best dancer in the K-pop industry and also one of the most sensual artists and with a voice that is difficult not to identify. Literally with listening to an x song without seeing the performer I can guess what it is, in fact I happened recently with a drama I saw for the first time and I reviewed nothing but the year in which it came out

Taemin is one of the most popular solo artists, as well as the youngest member of the legendary Kpop group SHINee. He debuted as a solo artist in 2014 and "Criminal" is part of his 3rd Korean solo album called Never Gonna Dance Again. It is part of a trilogy which started with his prologue "2 Kids," and continued with "Criminal" which is part of Act 1 of the album. And it was followed up by "Idea" which is part of Act 2 of the album and it brings the whole concept full circle.
As Taemin said in an interview: "The two acts put together tell a story. '2 Kids’ is about growing pains and depicts the story prior to the story in the album. You can think of '2 Kids' as a teaser before the movie called 'Never Gonna Dance Again.' Act 1 shows a new side of me. I think it’ll be something you’ve never seen in K-pop before. And Act 2 is the end-all-be-all. It’s the ultimate level of intensity. Never Gonna Dance Again’ was originally the name of the concept. Because it doesn’t make sense for me to stop dancing. But I wanted to give a sense of rebellion with the irony of the title.”
And just so you know, Taemin is not the criminal in the song. He is being held captive by the criminal who is the girl he is singing about (i.e. the pressure he feels under as a Kpop idol). The song is about living in a toxic relationship and being brainwashed by the girl to the point where you are suffering from stockholm syndrome and you have now fallen in love with the person (or thing -- i.e. his career) who is inflicting all the pain and suffering on him. Even though you are being abused by that person (possibly a metaphor for the pressure he is creating for himself with the need to always be the best in everything he does) you can't help but love them and allow them to continue to hurt you, etc.
This albums whole concept is a metaphor for his life and career. With every release from this album, the concept was designed to be darker then the last. In "2 Kids" he was emotionally and physically beating himself up with regrets and in "Criminal" he was living in a toxic relationship. And "Idea" takes the theme one step further, and says that even though it was my idea and my plan to live this life, nothing comes without a price, and because of that need for perfection, any chance of being average or living a regular life is pretty much dead. Taemin has sacrificed everything to become the magnificent and unique performer and person that we know him as today.
But there really is no one that pushes him or holds him to a higher standard then himself. Taemin has said that he really has never taken a true vacation since he was a trainee -- he started with SM Entertainment when he was around 11 years old -- and he doesn't know what to do if he isn't constantly working and training. The thing that he hates the most is when people assume he has had it easy because he is part of a big and powerful company and he is so naturally talented. As he has said, there has never been anything that has come easy to him and he has only gotten to where he is today because he has worked hard to accomplish everything. He is constantly pushing himself to become the best of the best in everything he does.
If you are impressed with Taemin's dancing, just wait until you see his dance practice video for "Criminal." You will be even more blown away. As I said, Taemin is on a whole other level.
Taemin's choreography is very much influenced by him. Although he has input in almost everything he does, he has choreographers that come up with the choreography for most of his dances and he then infuses it with his own ideas and style and makes it uniquely his. The way Taemin dances is just the way he moves. His movements are effortless. If you watch Taemin dance more, you will see that no matter who choreographs the dance, it will always be very Taemin-like. Many choreographers who have worked with him over the years have said that, with Taemin you can't help but allow him to move in whatever way his body takes him. Taemin is art in every sense of the word. :D
Taemin's style of dance can't be defined. As he has said, he has worked his entire career to create a style of dance that is unlike anything in the Kpop industry. And I would argue that that now extends to the entire industry of dance. Taemin started out as a self-taught popper and locker without any dance training, and, even then, as a trainee it was clear his skills as a dancer went far beyond the average dancer. Over the years, as you see with "Criminal," he has infused those popping and locking skills into his now more contemporary style of dance. But, when it comes to dancing, he can do it all and there is no one better at it than him.
Taemin is just one of those performers that leaves you speechless every time he steps on stage. He was born to be a performer and that is one of the reasons why he has become known as the Korean Michael Jackson. That is also why, as one of the top two dancers in the industry, he was made a member of SuperM. (Kai from EXO -- Taemin's best friend since they were trainees, who is also under SM Entertainment, as well as a member of SuperM -- is the other top dancer.) Taemin is an Idol of Idols and a legend of legends.
And the title of the industry's BEST dancer isn't just a fan's opinion but it's a widely agreed upon title bestowed on both Taemin and Kai by their peers and the industry as a whole. There is literally no one considered better than them.
Taemin's talents are one reason why SHINee are one of the top groups in the industry and why they have such legendary status. SHINee is made up of some of the absolute best singers, dancers and performers in the entire industry. With more than 12 years since their debut, they still command one of the top spots. When Taemin debuted in 2008 as part of SHINee he was only 14 years old and, yet, he was already known as one of the best dancers in the industry, and he has only gotten more magnificent over the years.
Now after 12 years Taemin is still one of the youngest in many Kpop circles (he is only 27) and, yet, he often has the most seniority and experience. He is so well respected that everyone looks up to him.
The funny thing is, although Taemin is ultra confident when on stage, when not performing his personality is the complete opposite. That's what makes him even more lovable and why he is so popular.
When on stage, Taemin can turn his sexy, sensual side up to 3,000 and he becomes the most powerful and magnificent performer that commands the stage. But the minute he step off the stage he becomes quiet and shy and he blushes when people compliment him for his looks or performance.
When not on stage, Taemin is known for being sort of innocent and kind of naive and a little ditsy, as only the maknae (youngest member) of a group can get away with -- he is 2 to 4 years younger than the rest of the SHINee members and he plays up being the baby when he is around them, and they pretty much will do anything he asks. He knows how to be cute when he wants something, but he hates it when someone asks him to be cute. LOL.
SHINee are a 5 member group that is known for their live vocals and amazing dancing. They are known as CD-quality singers because they sound just as good live, if not better, than they do recorded. SHINee always sings live. The ONLY thing they are not good at is lip syncing so they avoid it at all costs, so when you hear SHINee singing 95% of the time it will be live. They have trained their entire career to be able to sing live for 3+ hours straight and always sound flawless while performing extremely complex choreography the whole time. SHINee is the group that really set the standard when it comes to live performances. It's literally known as the SHINee standard and it's what all other groups work to reach.

Taemin is the best dancer in kpop because he’s unique. He uses sharp movements (popping & locking) but is very fluid too, also not afraid to add different styles or what is described as “female” dance movements. He has a very unique voice, it’s sultry, seductive but can be strong too.

I love this reaction, Taemin is King of Kpop
He didn't choreographed 2 kids but it was freestyle. This song was choreographed by Koharu Sagawara. One of the things I love about Taemin is how involved he is in his solo projects even when he doesn't write the lyrics he talks with the songwriters and gives them ideas. He does the same for the MV and he just seem to have a really clear viewpoint in what he wants to do. This song is from his album Never gonna dance again act 1. He also released last year act 2 (the title is called idea). Both albums are supposed to be connected and represent his search for breaking away from what he's done and challenging himself with new concepts and new styles of dancing. Yet even when he does new stuff he has a clear style... the kind of style that makes you say "that is so Taemin!". Btw even between idols he is often referred as one of the best dancers in kpop.

From what I remember, in one video he said whenever he dances he tries to understand why a certain movement/step/choreo is being made. By understanding the reason for that dance step, he is able to personalize and execute it on a deeper level and so it comes out better.
