My affinity towards Steffi was not just due to her ultra successful tennis that I, and we as fans, enjoyed but also her personality and core values. She was a fierce competitor on the tennis court but a shy humble person off the court. Her philanthropy with her foundation called Children for Tomorrow speaks volumes on her lasting legacy after tennis. And of course, how she values her family (husband and children) as her greatest success.
I love how Rennae Stubbs describes Steffi at 8:04 and 9:57. Just validates why I feel she is the greatest ever not only because of her incredible tennis achievements and success but also her genuine humility.
    Thank you Steffi! 🥰

      @ytangel7263 Před 2 lety +6

@@tomislavtomanovic3095 Sad that there are some, like yourself, who think that Steffi did not say anything as you described it. Steffi has publicly said that she hoped Monica would return, that she wished her well on her comeback and in one interview, she even said that Seles tragic event would not have occurred if she/Steffi never played tennis.
We all have to live with what life gives and takes from us. Monica was only absent for about 2 years so she definitely found her strength and will to comeback but I think it’s her father’s death to cancer that truly derailed her career. She won the ‘96 AO which told the world she was back but when her father passed shortly after, she never won again. Monica still played which was great but not at the level she could have been at if her father was not lost at a relatively early age.
If you think without bias, you could see the difference when comparing Petra Kivitova’s home assault vs. Monica, at least physically. I understand Petra’s was severe while Monica was not as physically damaging. Petra’s career arc totally changed while I think for Monica it was more emotional/mental having an assault in the public eye and losing your father to cancer. You still have to marvel on their fighting spirit to continue competing on the tour.
In other words, don’t misdirect your vitriol towards Steffi, but towards the one who assaulted Monica. Understand context better, it will help!

You have to be impressed with Steffi winning the 99 FO. She came back from injuries and it was the beginning of the big bangers. One of the all time greats, but that might have been her biggest achievement. The Seles stabbing is a tragedy, those 2 would have had another 12-14 duels and would have propelled each other to even higher levels.

From 1989 to 1999 Graf and Seles played only 15 matches, about 2 per year in the time both played on the tour.
Both were done from 1997 on due to injuries.
Extrapolating from this I don‘t think we missed more than 6 Graf-Seles matches because of the stabbing.

Jose Cardenas I think everyone is "over" it. But when there's a serious discussion about who's the GOAT of women's tennis, some tennis fans can't help but remind die-hard Steffi Graf fans that Monica Seles wasn't beaten & overtaken from holding her number 1 ranking by Steffi Graf. Monica Seles was stabbed & taken out of the top of women's tennis by a nut & Steffi Graf fanatic. No matter what, Steffi Graf was a great athlete & tennis player. Yes, it wasn't Steffi Graf's fault. But Steffi didn't overtake the number 1 ranking back from Monica Seles. Monica was the best player & number 1 ranked in the world at the time of her assault. Seles had beaten Graf at that year's '93 Aussie Open in a great match & she was extremely confident & heavily favored to continue winning more Grand Slams in '93. Like the upcoming '93 French Open, which Seles had won in her last 3 consecutive French Open appearances. Anyway, I think most Monica Seles fans are just stating the obvious facts of what happened. And it would be a much different story IF Steffi Graf had beaten Monica Seles & overtaken the number 1 ranking back from her. I think everyone would be reasonable if that were the case but it wasn't. I just feel so bad for Monica Seles cause we'll never know what she could have achieved & accomplished in women's pro tennis. Monica Seles' story is beautiful. And also extremely f*cked up at the same time.

    • @markuse3472
      @markuse3472 Před 5 lety +1

Many players rise to the top for one year, for three, for ten, and that's the story. Seles' stabbing had nothing to do with her not being able to win more than One slam afterwards: it was simply her time to descend. It happens to many. Her 1.5 centimeter cut is laughable in thinking it was more than a petty cut. Many athletes recover from even more serious surgery or treatment, even from more severe mental trauma, to rise to the top again--Michael Jordan and Steffi are some of those examples. More so, all top competitors realized Monica's weakness and went after it, namely her two-handing everything. Seles' weakness also was that she failed to change her two-handling everything. It took a toll on her upper body regardless if she or you fans don't speak of it. #SteffiIsTheGOATFemale
Steffi is 6-4 vs Seles Prior to stabbing, and facts are based on science and evidence, not opinions. And since facts can not be challenged, those who say Monica would have stayed on top are foolish. They are human first and foremost, prone to prejudices and biases.
Monica Seles' story is not as f'd up as her fans choose it to be. After 1993, it was simply her time to not rise and for others to rise, and for Steffi to stay at the top.

Monica Seles was way better player than Steffi Graf, at 19 Monica had 9 grand slams and was 54-1 at grand slams, nobody will ever match that record...Monica came out of nowhere and start winning against Steffi at almost every tournament, you could see Steffi's frustration, but than somebody made a plan...the only way to stop Monica was to stub her with the knife. And somebody arranged just that, a German man, big fan of Steffi Graf took the knife and stabbed her during her match in Germany of course. After that Monica was finished for tennis even though she tried. But the most disturbing story that besides all the pretending Steffi never felt sorry for Monica in fact she showed her true face when few months after that stubbing she insisted that Monica has to stripped of world number one rankings. After that Steffi went to win many tournaments but true tennis fans knew that she would anything if her German fan didnt stubbed Monica Seles - real tennis star. In fact after that many tennis fans stopped watching ladies tennis because of Steffi Graf and German fan who stubbed Monica Seles in Germany. So the numbers in this case are lying, all tennis fans who know tennis well will tell you that Monica Seles was much better tennis player than Steffi Graf and Monica results before she was stubbed by Steffi's German fan, prove that.

I feel the story of the Graf vs Seles rivalry is always such a one sided conversation, always dominated by the Seles stabbing and the "what ifs".
Yet a very important detail is always left out when discussing this rivalry.
In 1990 @the German open a cheating scandal broke involving Graf's farther. Starting 1988, Graf at this point had just won 8 of the last 9 GS she played and was on a 66 match winning streak. At this very same German Open she lost to Seles for the 1st time and 2 weeks later at the FO.
Then at Wimbledon a few weeks later she lost to Zina Garrison. A player she has not lost to in 4years till this point. Then went on to lose to Sabatini in the US Open. A player she was also on an 11 match winning streak. She went from losing only 3 matches in '88 and 2matches in '89, to losing 6 times in 1990, following the scandal breaking.
Peter Graf in July 1990 said he blamed his scandal for Steffi's lack of form.
Back to the Seles vs Graf rivalry. During their rivalry and Seles dominant years, 1990 - 1993, they split their matches 3-2. So Seles never dominated Steffi. Infact, after a slump in the ranking, Steffi was busy catching up and believed that she was playing herself back into form. She entered 2 tournaments Seles entered into in 1993 because she wanted to play Seles as much as possible before the FO of 1993.
Not to take anything away from Monica, because she was a phenominal player but claiming that she would have continued to dominate, is ridiculous. We all know that tennis players will go through highs and lows during their careers.
Same as Roger eventually figured out how to beat Rafa in 2017 and get the upperhand, the same could he said about Steffi. Gunther did not just rob Seles but he also robbed Steffi of challenging Monica at her best and shutdown this ridiculous "what if" conversation.

But we can also argue that Serena's generation is so competitive which makes it hard for any player to win multiple slams which makes Serena's 23 more impressive ...
You see, your kind of "no all time greats" argument is a double edged sword, it cuts both ways ... If you really see how today's women play, they really do hit a lot harder than the period when Steffi was dominating ..
Truth is undeniable that Seles was stabbed during a time when she was in the middle of a very dominant run (winning 7 of 9 slams) .. thats an undeniable fact.

Steffi Graf beat Navratilova at Wimbledon who is considered the greatest female Wimbledon player. What are you talkin' about. Steffi Graf actually faced a lot of the same players throughout her career in Slams. You know what that means? It means Steffi had consistent competition. Serena faces a new player every time because women's Tennis has been awful since Henin, Mauresmo and Clijsters were gone.
Henin at least beat Serena in 3 Slams, so that means competition and stops a player from adding to their Slam total. That's what Steffi had. True consistent competition. Serena had that earlier in her career which is why she wasn't that dominant back then. Only been dominant during her 30's. Winning Slams left and right 'cause players all suck now. If Serena retired same age as Steffi the Slam count wouldn't even be close. Steffi also got better winratio and more overall titles won. But apparently that doesn't matter.

Because you can compare getting assaulted and stabbed, in a place you should feel safe in, to something that happens as an injury without any sort of trauma attached to it. If someone is booing you, turn your head the other way or cover your ears and wait till it passes. Monica was in actual physical threat and could've easily had the same fear many matches after her recovery. Who can say she didn't get some sort of PTSD from it. No matter how much you try you can't compare the two things.

If Monica Seles hadn't been stabbed, she would have gone on to become the greatest female tennis player of all time. Who says this?..... Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King etc. Seles had Graf's measure and would have go on to win loads of Grand Slams which would have greatly reduced Graf's tally!. Even if Seles hadn't been stabbed, their rivalry would be nowhere near the greatest rivalry in sport never mind tennis......Martina Navratilova versus Chrissie Evert!!!. They brought women's tennis to a whole new level and their matches always had you on the edge of your seat!. Towards the end of her career, Martina and Steffi became good friends and Steffi has stated a few times over the years that if you take everything into consideration, singles, doubles and mixed doubles then Martina is the greatest female tennis player of all time and one of the best tennis players EVER. I absolutely and totally agree with Steffi that Martina is without question the GOAT and if anyone should know it is Steffi!!!.

Reason people will NEVER get past Monica being stabbed and always talk about it is because the German fan stabbed her because he was tired of Monica beating his idol. People realize that Monica would have won another 8-10 slams in her career if not for the knifing. That’s 8-10 less slams for Graf. So Graf’s slam records should have an asterisk before them. She didn’t deserve to win as many as she did. Monica was on a huge unstoppable winning streak at that time. Too bad for women’s tennis. Monica was the best.

Look the stabber later told the police he was sick and tired of Monica beating his countrywoman. So he knifed her. Simple as that. Graf had no backhand. Monica would have kept being the shit out of Graf. Face it. Besides Graf has 2 obvious faults. She isn’t pretty, and she married a sissy boy. End of story. Go back to Germany.

Peter Florino Hmm... if this is how slams (or any other tournaments) were won- based on past previous 2 years results- there would be no need to play to matches. That guy stabbing her was tragic, but that doesn’t mean you can count up a specific range of slams she would’ve won. She did come back and she came back at the top of her game. In fact, her serve was significantly better. But wasn’t very fit and she started getting injured. That’s part of the game.

Graf is a cold fish. You can call it shyness, but I've never seen a spark of warmth in her. She visited Seles once, after the stabbing, and that was the extent of her caring. As for her 22 GS titles, or whatever it is, before the advent of Seles, and after her stabbing, Graf had no tough, consistent rivals. Much like Federer had no real opposition before Rafa appeared.

@@sgeetha7350 anyway directive or not; if the moron above actually knows tennis and was well informed about the truth and lies that were spread to benefit certain people she or it would not dare
make such stupid statements. Manipulation by Seles started when she was stabbed. It was definitely unfortunate and even I being a Steffi fan never expected or wanted the stabbing to happen. However after the stabbing Steffi visited Seles at the hospital. After that Seles alleged that Steffi cut off all contact from then onwards. If you research more on this, Steffi actually tried to call Seles a few times via her management company but was declined to be put through to Seles - why is that? Who decided who can and cannot speak to Seles? Steffi Graf called and the call was not put through and Seles didn’t know about it? IMPOSSIBLE! she manipulated the whole event and situation and wrote in her book that Steffi visited her once full stop. Why didn’t she mention about Steffi trying to call via her mgmnt company? Arantxa and Magdalena played in the same tournament but never visited her at the hospital. Why didn’t Seles pick at that? At Wimbledon in 1992 Navratilova and Tauziat were blatantly obvious in their dislike of Seles’ screaming. Yet Seles was all praises about Navratilova in 1995, crediting Navratilova with helping her comeback. Rewind 3 years back and she was upset that Navi and Tauziat were making an issue about her grunting. Steffi said “we’ll see” and that hardly indicates that Steffi was upset or would complain about her grunting. Seles was screaming like a mad demented woman at the FO in 92 and Steffi said nothing. Why didn’t Seles say thank you or credit Steffi for allowing her to be co-ranked no. 1 upon her return. Steffi didn’t have to agree to that. Yet when the voting to freeze her ranking took place in Rome in 93 during the Italian Open; Seles declared and published that EVERYONE WAS AGAINST freezing her ranking except GS who abstained from voting. Again if research was done this is another manipulative lie coming out from Seles. Steffi did not participate at the 93 Italian Open hence she was not asked to vote. Did you Seles clowns expect Steffi to use telepathy or smoke signal to vote? Did Anne Worcester ask Steffi to vote? The manipulative bitch and family even had the audacity to expect Steffi to not play the 1995 US Open to honor her return. Karolj even stated that Seles may not comeback to tennis until Steffi stops playing???????? In 1990 when Steffi lost to her in Berlin and Seles saw Steffi smashing a hole on the locker room wall with her racket; Seles stated in her book that Steffi smashed the wall because she was upset and cannot
accept losing to her. In actual fact there is an interview in a German newspaper and it was published in mainstream news as well that quoted Steffi admitting that she smashed a hole in the locker wall after the Berlin loss because she hated the situation she was facing about her father’s affair with the model. So if the poster wants to state comments alleging unfounded bullshit, I should be free to state the truth. I can’t copy paste news clippings for you on YT but I’m sure you are capable enough to do your own research on what I have commented here.
