“Once you see it, you cannot un-see it.” Well, it may have taken me 20 years, but now I finally see it. 😂 Thanks to Felix, for bringing this important cultural issue to my attention. 🍻

Hi Jordan, my name is Brian. I read your comment on Takashi’s video about international couples in Japan, your comment about “the friends issue” and I thought you expressed the issue so well. You encouraged me to write my own comment on this aspect of international marriage. Based on your comment I thought you must have an interesting channel if you have a channel, and I came over to see. Sure enough, your topics are interesting. I completely agree with your assessment of the meaning and use of cones here. We don’t live here year round, only July/August on our summer holiday because we’re both teachers in America - so every year I’m reminded of these physical manifestations of Japanese thought, such as cones. Last week we travelled on the expressway and, where there is construction, there are usually real people waving a flag in the zone to say “move over please” but sometimes there can’t be a real human there. What is interesting to me is that, in those situations, there are sometimes 人形 construction dolls (mannequins?) which wave a caution flag automatically- and you can’t tell it’s not a human until you get close! And when they can’t get the life-size mannequins, they use a low-pixel orange screen with an Atari-like display of a man waving a flag and bowing 😅. It’s as if to say “No matter what, somehow we have to notify and apologize for the construction lane closure.” Also these situations feature comes with flashing lights - which is of course a fun sub-species of cones in Japan.

Yeah, those construction…robo-mannequins(?) are pretty great.
You come here every summer? Cool! Just travelling around, or do you have a place you usually stay?
Anyway, thanks for the comment, and welcome to the channel! 🍻

@@Jordan-inJapan Yes we come every summer, although due to COVID we couldn’t come in 2020 and 2021 😢. When in Japan stay in Utsunomiya with my wife’s family, and travel around here and there within our time here. We both used to live and work in Tokyo and have friends there, so we go there for a few days to visit them, things like that. As usual it’s so hot and gross here in the summer but this is the season we are able to be here so, しょうがないね〜😅

There is not a "correct" way to walk on the sidewalk. On the left or the right? And who as right of way? I see people almost bump into each other everyday. Old ladies nearly getting run over because no will will just let the other person go first or they will walk right into you and expect you to move for them.

Maybe I just haven’t noticed because I live in a rural area without that many people. But whatever the situation,
the solution clearly is more cones!

Jordan, I think you nailed it! I don't know who the guy is who was complaining.

Cones? Where? What cones? Do they exist? Are they really there? Could there be an illusion of cones?

    • @Jordan-inJapan

Or… could they actually be a manifestation of unconscious desires and frustrations? Hmmm 🤔
