One of the greatest pieces of advice I have ever got was from my Italian (it’s my first language) teacher in middle school: whenever you’re stuck in front of a blank page and for some reason you just can’t write anything, get another one and just jot down your fears and your expectations about what you have to write, everything that could go wrong and could stop you etc... At the end you will have a much clearer mind and you can just acknowledge and tackle every fear by focusing on what you can do to prevent that thing you’re afraid from happening. For example, if you’re afraid that something may come off as cheesy or cliche, think of everything you have to avoid to prevent that . This technique has literally never failed me.
You are the only one who actually goes in depth when talking about topics like these, and you are never repetetive. Thank you for that! I hope you are safe, healthy and happy
I agree with your statement that writing an essay is difficult. It is one of the toughest things I have to do in my academic life. We need to write a 1000-1200 word essay on a regular basis. Our teacher compels us, in a good spirit, to write at least one essay each week and get it evaluated by him. And I am never more scared in my life when my handwritten essay is scrutinized word-by-word and paragraph-by-paragraph in a Zoom session. Everybody can see my essay on the screen with the teacher counting down the pros and cons of it. Undoubtedly, those are one of the most productive sessions but nonetheless spine-chilling. I hope one day I am free of this fear. Or maybe a little anxiety is for the good. :)
Getting critical and constructive criticism on our writing is very scary but is exactly what makes us grow as writers. I feel exactly like you on those kind of classes but I'm learning to use it to grow instead of letting me down

What a great timing, got an essay due in a few days but just can't get myself to start... What I'm often worried about is the balance of research vs my own opinion. When I'm passionate about the topic I can write pages and pages on inspiration alone, but when it's something less exciting, it becomes "this guy says this and that guy says that, that's cool I guess"... The struggle is real, but I guess it's ok for a student work?
I have a serious essay writing phobia. Give me 30 short answer questions and I will answer them well in an hour max. Essays however, they take me weeks! The entire time I am anxious, and as the due date gets closer my heart races non-stop and my stomach churns. I am very confident in my writing, I enjoy research assignments and creative writing pieces. It is just essays that induce a terrible panic

+ Always remember that reading perception comes down to taste. Someone will call your essay amazing, while others might judge it as passable. Just because one person dislikes it, doesn't mean other people won't! Find a professor/ readership/ whatever you are comfortable dealing with.

Omfg this was amazing. As an artist obtaining her MA, I needed to hear this. I’m creating literary art. I’m in the act of creation. Yes, it’s scary because I don’t want my art to be judged but, like any art/sport, practice will give me the confidence I need. Now, with non-fiction, I’m going to add narrative components to it since that’s my joy. Maybe making a poetic advocacy paper won’t be so bad. 😂

I totally agree with you points. I recently took up essay writing as a way to improve my thinking patterns, and my argumentative skills overall. The only thing I would add, or actually recommend, is that people try to write their essays on actual, physical paper. I find it an entirely different experience, because there's no going back after writing something in ink (as opposed to writing on a laptop, where you can just delete the parts you don't like without any trouble).
Hello :) Those reasons reassured me that using a laptop is much more convenient than writing on paper. Wasn't very convincing. Sorry I don't mean to be rude, it's just that deleting parts that I don't like at a click of a button seems like a positive thing
Blank page is the worst. That comes from someone whose pen (last) name is Blank, so I do appreciate certain variations of blankness. I like that you go deeper in revealing one fear from another. There are connections everywhere, as well as truths we must face about ourselves within things that seem so plain at first.
In Spanish (my mother language) Essay is "Ensayo" wich means to rehears, so every time you write you are rehearsing for the next one. Thanks for the video, I thought I was alone on this boat of fears and overthinking before writing, but it okay and it's completely normal

Not in collections, but the Poetry Foundation have a number of amazing essays online mostly on literature. Another great source is the Public Domain Review. It's the perfect example of deep research on hard academic subjects, turned into essays for everyone. Hope you find it useful and good luck.
