How To Tell The Difference Between A Goose And A Gander

  • You don't need to turn your geese upside down to sex them -- there are clear differences in appearance and behaviour which will help you work our which is male and which is female...
    Of course, things get a bit trickier if you only have one, or if they are the same - but we hope this gives you some clues. If you're still not sure, then you might consider turning them upside down and having a look. But geese are very proud animals and find that sort of thing a real infringement of their dignity, so only do that if you really need to. (The penis will protrude when gentle pressure is applied around it. If you don't see one that could mean that you have a female, but it could also mean that you haven't done it right.)

    Its important to note that the behavioral signs can be misleading unless you only have one male and a small group of females. My lead male will guard his girls, but I have another male who doesn’t and one of the females that can be really grumpy with people.

    One of the most important factors and the easiest way to differentiate genders of greylag geese or their domestic descendants(which these geese in this video are) is their voices. Females are more hoarse and lower pitched, males are more straight, squawky and higher pitched.
    0:17 Female voice.
    0:25 Male voice.
    And there you have it ha ha.

    this video has helped me out a lot. well i found out i have 2 males and 1 female. I bought them from a tractor supply near me well about an hour away from me they told me it was a 90%chance of all female's well they were wrong i have 2 male's and 1 female. and the female has decided to bond with the more aggressive gander.
    Peepers will come up behind you and attack your leg pants or shoes but when my mom comes home he will sound off and come towards her he hates her with a passion. i have had all 3 sense 3 weeks old. I am glad my one male is not aggressive towards anyone so we have a breeder for this years breeding and a breeder for the babies next year so that works perfect for me.
    Peepers acts like the gander in this video he will act all tough but is a gentle bird he don't fly at your face or anything like that but i don't allow strangers in the yard anymore where they are they have to stay out side of the penned in yard. they even back my 3 big dogs off peepers will go out of his way and bite them in the butt. LOL.

      @RCT3Crashes100 Před 7 lety

      As a whole the more aggressive or protective male tends to be chosen by potential mates, since the female's interested in finding a partner who will defend her and her offspring. It's basically a hold over from their wild ancestors.

    • @653j521
      @653j521 Před 5 lety

      muscovy duck&chicken breeder A 90% chance doesn't mean the alternative can't happen and the seller was wrong that your three weren't female. Even in the way we popularly use probability outside the world of mathematics, 90% means the seller was saying it wasn't very likely that there would be a male in the group but couldn't guarantee there wouldn't be because it was straight run. So the seller was correct in that information, which I'm sure was based on the results they had seen up to that point with other geese and other customers. You should have figured that somebody would get a male or two eventually because they weren't sorted to only include females. It was just your lucky day. :) (One year I got four straight run chicks from a feed store. Three were aggressive males and the female never laid any eggs! Not such a lucky day.)

  • @HegenerHomestead
    @HegenerHomestead Před 2 lety +1

    So looks like the gander is also much more vocal and sticks his neck out more when telling you off. We ordered two goslings and 8 ducklings and they are all supposed to be male, but I'm wondering if we got a couple females. One gosling is much bigger than the other and a lot louder. The other doesn't talk nearly as much and when it does, its much quieter.

    thats great if you have 2 geese one of each gender to observe their interactions and compare them to each other..
    But what if you only have one (rescued) goose...with a short neck and no undercarriage.
    My goose (or gander) is not agressive towards me or the ducks and seems (in the absence of any other geese for comparison) to have equally male and female characteristics and appearance.
    One odd behaviour thing however......he or she, seems to find it upsetting when some ducks mate and will start calling out loudly and if that doesn't work approach them flapping his or her wings till they stop!
    Some couples Goosey doesnt seem to care how much they mate, others goosey feels compelled to stop their copulation at all costs. At first i thought it was when over aggressive drakes were pushing themselves on females but there have been times when Goosey has brought about and early finish to a perfectly consensual mating lol.
    And the other day, my disabled duck was being happily(for her, not just for the drake) serviced by her gentle mate, and that got rudely interrupted by Goosey, who seemed to think he or she was acting in the interests of my disabled girl duck (who trust me was enjoying the drake lol)
    Does that behavior give you any indication of the gender of my goose or is my goose just weird? Goosey is my first goose, and at the moment is hanging out with my 150-200 ducks, but I would like to get him or her a mate. Im hooping that if goosey is a girl then with spring almost on us some large eggs will make the answer to my question clear, as the one visit goosey had to the vet was hugely stressful for him or her. otherwise i guess ill need to bring Goosey some flowers ans treats and upend him or her and hope my goose sexing skills are better than my duck vent sexing is!
    I think Goosey is an embden he or she looks like one and I rescued him/her from the roadside where poor Goosey was sitting close to the remains of another completely white goose why had died and been half eaten by hawks. While poor Gooseys mate was pretty well seen to by what I assume was hawks, there was enough remaining to be sure that the mate was also white like Goosey. (Goosey was not surprisingly, depressed for the first few days after rescue but gradually came around and is now loud and proud and rather cool IMHO

      Megan Sporle I guess having that many ganders will create more squabbling - but nothing worse than that. If you could be certain which geese are with which ganders, then it might be best to move the surplus ganders away - but it's too late to make up new couples this year because they've already sorted themselves out. Glad this video was a bit helpful!

    My female geese are the ones that like to nibble me. Shoelaces, belt loops, seams, buttons and e the all time favorite of hoodie strings. My gander will just stand back and watch and worry about them all nibbling on me. He is a pretty good gander though. I have Pilgrims and they are one of just a few breeds that are color sex linked. Females are grey with white on the face and males are white with a few grey feathers. Super easy to tell genders that way. I used to have Embdens and the female would climb up on my lap and lay down while her mate would watch a few feet away. Another way to tell sometimes on the Embdens is the males have bright orange beaks and feet and the females will many times have a pink orange. Also the males stand with their beaks facing up a bit while the females beaks are level or even pointing a bit down when they stand.

      Sarah H Thank you Sarah. Very interesting. It's still dark this morning but I will have a good look at the angle of their beaks later on..

      great just great now I'm even more confused about whether Hanibal my embden goose is male or female. I'm beginning to think male again but I've been calling Hanibal her since july and I know that if I try to flip Hanibal to sex um....it...well those wings are no fun when they connect to your face by accident. I only have the one and ...it...man that's awkward views me as mommy I guess the funny thing is Hanibal always seems to stand between me and anyone else in the coop ignores the dozen or so chickens though, does that mean Hanibal's male? I kind of want to get a couple more this year but if Hanibal is male I don't dare get another male imagine the possible fights.... bad images.

      Bg Labelle Um this is going to sound weird and possibly disturbing or ironic but when I toss steak scraps to my chickens Hanibal eats the meat should I be worried? everything I could find on geese says he should NOT be interested in the meat yet he gobbles it down just as fast as my chickens. I'm planning on getting him a mate this spring do you think that might help?

    • @Tialakit
      @Tialakit Před 9 lety

      Bg Labelle The thing is the meat is the leftover steak bits from my family's dinner that we didn't eat and I am not giving it to Hanibal he's stealing it from the chickens. I only give my chickens cooked meat I'm terrified someone is going to get sick. Hanibal won't eat bugs or worms he will try any veggie I toss into the pen though. He also love watermelon.
