  • I’ve had several people asking me to do a setup video of the Mastwerks tripod. In this video I go through the setup and tell my story of how ham radio was introduced into my life, how it faded and how Parks On The Air saved the hobby for me. Thanks for watching and 73!

    I got my ticket in 2021. Not sure I would have ever gotten off the ground had it not been for POTA. It turns out that you are one of the three contacts I've had with Alaska. I'm in south Texas.

      POTA has saved the hobby or started the hobby for so many! That’s awesome and I hope we make more contacts. 73!

    Great Mastwerks demo, and a compelling personal story. Glad you and yours survived. Just like for you, POTA renewed my interest in amateur radio for all the same reasons --- the technical challenge and the fun of going to parks.

    Outstanding review on the Mastwerks! Thank you very much! Glad you got back into the hobby and great to hear your personal story. I had taken a few years here and there off from the ham radio as well due to life events and more. As long as one keeps their license current, ham radio is always there waiting and you can pick up where ya left off. 73!

    I sure wish I had that setup for my 3 el 2M/4 el 70cm portable setup when I was camp hosting in a remote USFS campground in Colorado.
    POTA revived my interest as well, now as a full-time RVer I am starting over, sad I sold my Elecratt K2 3 years ago, but equipment is replaceable even though you have to get resourceful to buy it, lol. I am.lovong QRP for 44 years, that part has come a long way as well. Hope to work you someday, I am working on my QRPGuys 3 Band vertical if it ever stops hailing here, lol. Like you I had a weather event, we were on a 16' John boat in MN when a thunderstorm came up with lightning & hail. My 5 year old son who is now age 37 has a special appreciation of weather like me now, lol!

    Thanks...interesting history. I have a K4KIO hexbeam, now for 6 years.....love it. no noise problems. But I'm about 85% digital. I have hunted parks around the world. I like activating, but my situation doesn't allow that very much. Enjoy your channel and keep listening for you, trying to get AK in my POTA log.

      Thanks! Yeah I love that hex beam! I didn’t always have noise. Honestly I think a transformer is causing it. I usually have a S7 noise floor now. I need to see if I can track it down for sure. Thanks for watching and hopefully we can make that contact. 73

    I've had one for several years and I love it, but you don't get the full 33'. If you are using the standard Buddipole, you can use the full 33 feet. But if you are using thelong whips, long arms, Buddistick vertical you have to collapse the last section or two.

    • @KL7ECoutdoors
      @KL7ECoutdoors  Před 10 měsíci

      Absolutely, great product. I’ve used the whole 33’ with my long whips and arms with no issues. That was also in no wind either. I’ve also used it in windy conditions and about lost it! I can definitely see not using the 33’ as a vertical. Thanks for watching my friend, 73!

    Hey Jeramy. I feel your pain with the RFI at the QTH. Living in a townhouse has the same issue. One of my neighbors added something that started causing loads of noise almost 24/7 on HF. Adapt. Improvise. Overcome. I just head out when I can to do some POTA and take advantage of any opportunity to do so when traveling nowadays. POTA ON! 73!

    Very nice portable mast, the rotator is added points!
    Here in the Phils, we use the "speaker" or lightstand for concerts =P
    Though I personally use my speaker stand which extends only to 8-10feet and compacts to 4feet.
    Happy POTA!

    Thanks for this video Jeremy. You mentioned the painter pole adaptor on the top. Chris at Buddipole had occasionally mentioned the ability to use a mast other than the the Masterrks tripod. I have the Buddipole long tripod, which I think is 16 foot. Do you know if the Buddihex can mount to the Buddipole mast that they also sell, perhaps with that painter pole adaptor? And do you think 16 feet would be sufficient height for the hex beam to perform? Finally, does that 7m fit into your SUV OK?

    • @KL7ECoutdoors
      @KL7ECoutdoors  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks my friend! The buddinhex is unique in its mounting that slips right onto the mastwerks. It’s not round but keyed that locks it into place. To my knowledge, Buddipole doesn’t have an adapter to use the buddihex on another tripod. Like I said I’m not 100% sure on this. I have the 10m mastwerks and it fits in the bed of my truck or my wife’s suv with no issue.
      If you could use the 16’ tripod with the buddihex, you wouldn’t be able to extend it all the way. The 7m mast would be the smallest I would go and we’ve used that during the prototype here a few years ago and it worked great.
      There’s some good videos out there how high you should get a hex beam, more for 20 meters.
      Thanks for watching! 73

  • @Kody10538
    @Kody10538 Před 11 měsíci

    Thanks for the video and the story. On the mast, do you still extend it fully with the buddipole then and just not the hex? I'm apparently a month or less away from being next on the buddihex list, so I'm deciding on which mast to go with. Sounds like the 7m mast must be the one to go with in this case. I did also consider getting a buddipole at some point but I'm not sure how they might perform compared to something else that sets up quicker like a sloper EFHW or inverted V. Likely some differences in take-off angle but have you ever used anything like that to compare it to the buddipole? Guess I'm just trying to either justify or rule out getting the longer mastwerks system for days that I might want to use it but for the poles and not want to spend the time putting up a hex. Although if I want a quick antenna setup I already have a dozen other options haha.
    Enjoy the videos.

      @KL7ECoutdoors  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Thank you! It’s going to depend on the wind if you want to raise the mast all the way. I can’t compare the antenna to a EFHW or inverted V because I’ve not used one here. I have when I lived in Georgia and they work great. As you know, the antenna fits the environment surrounding and what it is your wanting to accomplish. In my case, I think it’s the best setup for me. Thanks for watching! 73

      Thank you my friend! In the lower 48 you can tune up a metal trash can and make some great contacts. We don’t have that luxury here. Everything has to be precise due to our location. The Ionosphere is unstable here. Thanks for watching!
