  • Tanja Hester retired at age 38.
She had a negative net worth until her late 20's, thanks to a combination of student loans, buying expensive cocktails and clothes, living far beyond her means, and not paying attention to her money. If you were to have met the 27-year-old version of Tanja, you wouldn't guess that she'd be a likely candidate for retiring early.
Yet a decade later, she's saved 40x of her annual cost of living.
How? Tanja worked as a political consultant in Los Angeles, and during her career, ascended to important high-ranking roles. Every promotion came with more grueling hours, accompanied by a raise.
Tanja maintained her same standard of living, banking every raise. This simple strategy allowed her to rapidly grow her net worth.
She didn't obsess about penny-pinching. She didn't clip 50 cent coupons for shampoo and soap. Instead, she focused her efforts on getting that next promotion, that next raise, and when it arrived, she saved and invested every additional cent.
Today, at age 39, Tanja has published her first book, Work Optional, about saving enough to retire and live a lifestyle in which paid work is an option rather than a necessity.
She joins us on this week's podcast to talk about the lessons she outlines in Work Optional.

This really resounded with me. Thanks for making this. I am really happy to hear about the realities of retiring early and to FINALLY hear people in the community talk about some realities of all the free time (loneliness, depression etc.). I am in the very fortunate position to have a relatively small but regular guaranteed monthly income. I worked hard to change my lifestyle to fit within this budget and that meant I had a lot of time off for half the year. The unstructured freedom was something I wasn't ready for and hadn't thought about. All my friends were in work and I got very lonely. I already suffer from depression so this wasn't good for me. I quickly learned that my days need structure and now I have put in place plans to do things that will address this. Thank you so much for talking about this because this aspect of "financial freedom" it's not covered enough. We all dream about not having to work and then some of us realise that this fluffy, undefined dream can turn into our own quiet nightmares as you sit at your kitchen table at 1pm overthinking everything and waiting for your housemates to finish work to have someone to talk to. Thanks again for being up-front and serious about this topic.

Paula I have been listening to this channel now for a number of months. The podcasts are so interesting and inspiring. Tanja’s book Was so good and well thought out. I especially liked the part about risk, even working until 65 and assuming you’re going to be healthy enough to enjoy retirement is a risk that people are taking. I know one financial planner who saved his whole life and retired at 65 and died of esophageal cancer at 66. We just don’t know the future, And you and Tanja and so many others remind us that we need to plan to enjoy life both now and in the future.

I am a Realtor and I love my job! I am just at my number and don’t have to sell a single house ever again and my bills are paid by rental income. However my job is not hard and I do love it so I have kept on working. It is much more rewarding because I can pick and choose who I want to work with. Also I can pass potential clients to younger agents who need the work and helping them is very satisfying as well. Thank you both for the great content.

This is why realtors are going obsolete. Why should we pay you 5%- 6% to list a house at what some internet algorithm tells you to list it for. Thank you for being the first realtor who speaks the truth. I always knew realtors don't do much.

Interesting... I just received a new opportunity at work, that I applied for. Pay increase and a cross training opportunity. When I was alerted that I was chosen, I am so glad that they couldn't see my insides. I felt odd...down a bit. Likely because it's a bit to learn and a new team to work with. But my goodness, I'm the one that applied for it AND I'll get paid substantially more. I had been trying to figure out what was wrong with me. The lightbulb went off when I listened to this message. Thank you. I'm not crazy after all LOL. Now I can start the new position with less "odd" stress. 😊

Great interview! I have one question about her perspective on health issues.... as Tonja opened up about yoga, depression and such.... and as a nurse of 32 years who has seen many heal by following a plant based diet, myself included, I was wondering if she was doing that as well? Health is a Big part of wealth....
