- This is a review of the color triage system. This is meant to be a memorable way to remember the different priorities and treatments. The lyrics are written to Billy Joel's 'Uptown Girl'. If you wish to leave comments, please use constructive criticism and be respectful. A lot of hours went into making this film. It is not to make fun of an MCI situation, but to review the color system in a unique way.
Disclaimer According to the most recent FEMA's NIMS, the ICS does not include an "EMS Command". The statement in the song only represents that a general command structure needs to be created in order for better organization. We apologize for any confusion.
Some Examples:
Red Tag:
Loss of consciousness
Severe hemorrhage (or in shock)
Severe respiratory distress
Burns affecting face and/or respiratory system
Complicated fractures
Pregnancy (with obvious injury/illness)
Open (penetrating wounds) from throat to crotch
Yellow Tag:
Moderate blood loss (non-life-threatening)
Burns not affecting respiratory system
Head or spinal injury (conscious with no dyspnea)
Green Tag:
Walking wounded (need BLS care only)
Black Tag:
Dead or resources are not available

In an MCI scene, CPR is not attempted. If the responder opens the patient's airway and they do not start breathing on their own, they are a black tag.

Thank you for this video. I have used it in my Community Nursing class for several years when talking about disaster management, to illustrate the basics of triage. It is memorable, and a fun way to learn.

should cpr be attempted before declaring a black tag?
no when you do triage you just tag patients based on resp below or above 30 if below 30 its yellow if below its red if not breathing after opened airway (we turn them over to open airway) they are tagged deceased because usually if they don't start breathing after they will die

Our brand new CERT team (Washington Township, Morris County) loves this video.
On an MCI scene, CPR is not to be attempted. The only chance a patient gets is when the responder opens the patient's airway. If they do not start breathing on their own, they are a black tag. You only get 30 seconds with each victim and 30 seconds of CPR will not save her.

@ICEMANof92 ,You are correct. If there is any doubt of trauma, a jaw thrust should be used. Let's just say this individual was in shock from seeing the horror of the MCI. ;)
