  • This episode was difficult. No more than usual in any logistical or practical sense, but rather the ultimate decision to post it at all was not easy to make. I fear it will send the wrong message. Paint an incorrect picture of my original intentions. I've worked and have been a part of online business and creative projects for a decade and I'm no stranger to the inherent "intricacies" present in existing in a highly public space. However, a small part of me does still take mild issue with the perceived (intentional or not) hint of entitled ownership presented through some comments and correspondence.
    In every conceivable sense, I deeply appreciate every single one of you who choose to follow along with me on this werid ride. The things I do, the type of "content" I share is certainly not for everyone. Long ago I forwent attempting to make things that follow many of the standards in the art or creative world. These episodes vary wildly in format; generally taking on whatever environment or mood I find myself present during the days or weeks of filming.
    With the sincerest of intentions, I do hope you all enjoy at least some portions of what I do and share, even the person who sent me that delightfully complimentary/demanding email. I am out here doing exactly what I want to do. And I'm glad you all are here with me.

    I
    Three (maybe a few more) things I love Adam.
    1. the fence is fantastic. Really well seen and done.
    2. The “I hope I don’t fall in the river”
    3. Leia under the camera on shot two.
    4. F6.3 on an 8x10 and something is in do us! Chapeau!
    5. The ubiquitous glass of bourbon.

      @AdamWelch  Před 9 měsíci

      Hey Andy, that little umbrella was one of those things I purchased last year "just in case." I went for months without using it and considered getting rid of it in order to save a little bit of room in the vehicle and then boom...used it four times in a single month with a few of those being more or less instances where I REALLY needed it. It's been a great little gadget.

      @@AdamWelch I wasn't talking about a specific image in this video, just a suggestion in general, as in it doesn't shade part of any image, as the shade is not in the general cone of coverage of the lens; but if put to it, I would say the one of the fence, when the light got brighter, second shot?, I think, but is an all around good thing to have in use in all sunny and glare prone shots.

    Enjoyable video - Is that a KOJAK Dumb twice camera? You said x-ray film, are you using blue or green type? My personal choice is a Grundloch Korona with Fuji Green and a Wollensak (wollysack) 13" Apochromatic Raptor. Keep up the great work ,love it.

      The fact I instantly knew what camera you're referring to is both satisfying and disturbing.... I am fairly certain those holders in the episode were loaded with some of the final sheets of green-sensitive AGFA. I am/was currently using Fuji HR-U (also green-sensitive) in my 11x14 and was using it in the 8x10 Korona prior to putting it into storage.

      Those are the same films I use in my cameras (5x7, 4x10 and 8x10). Not that I'm psychic (possibly just a bit psychotic) just an old man showing a deep interest in old field cameras and lenses. I collect and use mostly WWI era Cooke along with 1940's and 50's Wollensak and Kodak lenses and I still think you did a great job in making that video, good sense of humor too.@@AdamWelch

      Do you have a preferred developer you employ for your radiographic film? Always curious to know what folks are using. Also, what make of camera is your 4x10 camera if you don't mind me asking? I'm steadily growing more and more interested in wider formats.

    one other suggestion, if you have to tilt "Winston" down that far, add a clamp to the tripod leg, and, like a tent, peg it down with string, so you have extra protection, and also a 'counter-balance' to the off center weight.

    another innovative idea people did, was use 1/2 darkslides aka for multi-exposures, passport photos (4-on, 8x10); this would solve the foreground issue, with a top\bottom 1/2 slide, replace the normal slide with the 1/2 one, lower 1/2 dark that way you get the water only; then to do the other 1/2 turn the holder 180 deg. then use the 1/2 slide again.
    this above idea also allows one to shoot more on the limited amount of double darks one can carry in ones bag, so if you only have one holder left, you can get 4 shots (4x10"), not just two, so allowing you some more time.

      @@AdamWelch I was aligning with what your comments where in the video, that, having the "hypothetical empty space", at 23:35, and if my assumption of this was right, in black and white, an uninteresting tonal range, or monotone subject, with low contrast or detail ( that grey limp grass in the foreground) ; that removing it, if impossible by shift/rise, could be 'blocked out' by using this method, of exposing half of a frame, hence using only the top area to expose, using that area to 'focus' the frame on the subject, aka a way of subject isolation. (you said that lens was the only one you had, so by extended thinking, changing perspective, to remove this foreground grass {by moving the tripod and isolating it with a long[er] lens, like studio photographers do, would be impossible}, so this other method of "cropping" in-camera, came to mind).

    • @AdamWelch
      @AdamWelch  Před 5 měsíci +1

      If I understand you correctly I think you're referring to left/right "shift" movements? If so, I found a manual for the Peco Universal 2 (not 3) which states both the front and rear standards of the 8x10 model have a left/right shift of approximately 1.8 inches. I would assume this would be similar to the Mark 3 model but of course I can't confirm that.
