- I've used the GX2 fishing rod from UGLY STIK for over three years now. This is my full review of this fishing rod. I own three of this model. I prefer the 6' 6" length with the medium action. In this video I actually share more than 5 reasons why I love this fishing rod. This model is good for fresh or saltwater fishing.

I love Ugly Stiks because they are very, very hard to break. I live a rough, tough life, and need things that can keep up with me. Including rods. My old man introduced me to Ugly Stik when I was very young, and ever since then, I have used them. Never once have I broken one under normal use. (I did have a spare tire in the bed of my pickup snap off the tip.) When I was a kid I caught a 25lb Brown on an old Ugly Stik Ultra light, name another rod you could do that with and not worry about snapping your rod.
I mean, st croix are good too, but I would honestly fish with the good old ugly stick than a rod that costs an arm and a leg. All for a cheaper price
The Berkeley Big Game Power Series rod’s are GREAT RODS too that could do that and not worry about the rod snapping. It’s made of fiberglass so it’s very flexible and durable -And only cost about $25 dollars at Walmart.
But you used an Ultra Light… LOL! I can’t think of, or name another rod similar of that size of the Ugly Stik you used to handle that 25lb Brown… other than an Ugly Stik. LOL!
Sounds like a democrat ran area where you need to run to the fishing spot without being mugged
I don't have a GX2, but I do have a couple of the original Ugly Sticks. My first one was a 9' Ugly Stick paired with a Penn 104. It was a birthday gift from my parents when I was 11. 33 years later I still fish that rod (I pair it with a Spinfisher V 5500 now). It is a true powerhouse. I have other rods (penn, tsunami airwave elites, ODM and a couple custom) but, I still go back to my Ugly Sticks! I love them!
Awesome review, best sit up for the buck. I have used them for years. Thanks for sharing.
i just got gx2 for christmas cant wait to try it in the spring
Recently found your channel and love it! I'm a lingcod and rockfish kayak fisherman on the northern California coast. I recently started using GX2's (one spinning and one bait casting) in medium-heavy and they are absolutely fantastic! My bait casting rig is a 6'6" and my spinning setup is a 7' rod. You are absolutely correct in saying that these rods just can't be beat for the cost and warranty!
Nice review JC. I have several inshore 7'6" models going to have to pick one up for my yak ,,,Thanks Buddy
I agree with your assessment of the 6'6" Medium spinning GX2. Like you I have a 40 Abu Garcia on my gx2. I also have the 6'6" MH bait casting rod with an Ambassadeur reel on it. I like the MH for channel cats and fish in the 5-15 pound range. I spool Kastking 20 and 40 pound braid, respectively on the reels and have no issues with rod, reels or line.
Tyvm for your review. I was thinking about buying one.
My favorite RODS of all time !!
'NEVER LEAVE HOME WITHOUT EM'
This ugly stik is fantastic for even bigger fish. Only thing i buy..i fish in Juneau, Ak for King salmon ( Chinook) and cohos (Silver salmon) never breaks nor am i ever concerned with a break. Great review of my favorite and many Alaskans favorite pole. Subbed brother
Couldn't agree more. I fish almost exclusively with Ugly Stik rods. GX2 med, med heavy, Catfish rod, Elite, all great rods. Best bang for your buck in my opinion. 👍
All my salt water rods are Ugly Stiks, from the 7’ Inshore, 7’6” Selects and the GX2.
Just Bought This Rod. I'm excited
I appreciate the review from an average consumer as myself. I’m no trophy fishermen by any means but a decent price quality set up is what I like and it seems that I found my next one. Thank you
I already owned one of these but a couple of weeks ago I found another already paired with an Okuma Trio4 at my local pawn shop. Probably only used once or twice by tourists. Set me back a whole $15 . Love fishing, hate spending money to do it.
Ha ha...I love finding deals like that.
I know I’m late but only problem I have with it is bass fishing since when you get a small bass you can’t feel it so you end up gut hooking him
I'm really happy I chose this rod; I was at bass pro shops and just decided why not before even hearing about this brand and after looking it up I'm very happy. I got the 5'0 rod ultra light action.
I am literally by nothing but ugly sticks when I was five years old my brother got me my first fishing rod it was an ugly stick and it is still going strong to this day
Thank you for the product review. Great review on that rod !!
I have three GX2's of various lengths and have caught everything from Bass to channel catfish and bluegill. Ugly Stik rods and reels are fantastic. All of mine are spinning reels, but I love them. Easy to use and I have noticed that it doesn't matter how big the fish are or how hard they fight. All of my rods have held up fine.
I love the ugly stick I’m 53 still have my ultralight I bought when I was 16, 6’, 6’6”, 7’ love them all caught everything from brook trout ,perch to chinook, musky
I agree 100 % ....I accidently smash it with a door (it's a heavy ulin/iron wood door)...and it doesn't break....this is one definitely one of the most durable rod or maybe the most durable rod I've ever have....
JC I have this same Ugly Stik rod you have. Paired it with my Penn Fierce II 3000 and it's great. Used it down at Gulf Shores, Alabama to fish off the state park pier and from the beach. Caught lots of Ladyfish, pinfish, hardhead catfish and whiting and it handled them all like a champ. Taking it back down there in a few weeks for some thanksgiving week fishing.
I have two 7'6". I switched to these so I could go across the bow easyer. I use a 3000 reel on one and a 4k on the other and its ok.I understand what you are saying thank you
My most dependable rod. I have bait casters and I always bring my x2 and it catches just as good 🤙
I have the 7' medium action gx2 with a Mitchell reel and use it for fishing salmon/trout in lake Michigan in Wisconsin and love it caught some nice size fish with no problem.
Do you recommend the 7 ft medium for bass fishing from the bank ? I have a bunch of different setups I use but was gonna pick one up just to throw some flukes / jerkbaits on ? Or do you think the medium will be too much ?
I have fish salt water for over 35 years. Catching thousands of pounds of codfish blue fish on the same 2 ugly sticks for 35 years. I still have them today. 8 foot medium heavy. 40 to 50 pound line test. I can put them up against anything that is made. They have never failed. They look a little rough. The toughest Rod I have ever had.
Thanks sir for the information, just buy now my new fishing rod Ugly stick gx2
I just got my 1st 2 Ugly Stik fishing rod’s ever in my life a few days ago. I love both of them!
I got the Ugly Stik GX2 7’0 Medium Heavy 1 piece ($49.99 Cabela’s) paired with my PENN Fierce II 4000 size reel spooled with 30lb braid with a light 12 inch leader. I JUST CAUGHT MY 1ST FISH WITH IT LAST NIGHT! I caught a little 16 inch 2 - 2.5lb largemouth bass on a white deep diving crankbait (KVD)
My 2nd Ugly Stik I purchased is the Ugly Stik Big Water (the new yellow and black colored) 8 foot Medium Heavy 2 piece collapsible rod paired with my PENN Fierce II 8000 size reel spooled with 300 yards of 80lb braid on a 30 inch #130 fluorocarbon leader.
I have then in 7 and 9 foot and really like them!
I love to see it! I’ve been fishing ugly sticks since I was a little kid! Always my go to rod, if I’m not using a ugly stick it just didn’t feel right
I have slammed a car door on one of my gx2’s on the tip and it did break lmao
A couple of days ago I went to Walmart and got me a GX2 and got me a neon orange Lews Lzr Pro Spinning reel. Smooth as butter and the rod is amazing
I love my Lew’s inshore along with my Ugly Tiger lite for all my inshore and close surf fishing...ugly has been around a long time for good reason.
Got a 7 foot medium heavy casting gx2 already going to pick up a 9 foot medium spinning rod tonight
Walmart also sells a new ugly stik inter coastal with cork handles for 35 dollars and penn makes the squadron 3 with cork, both are great because I prefer cork over foam
Medium light action is amazing too
I love all my ugly stiks I have bigwaters, catfish’s , Gx2s, and a tiger but I enjoy the Gx2s 7ft ML and M for carp and huge catfish. Caught a huge common carp that was 35lb and a big 25lb Channel catfish on the Gx2 ML and M.
Hi JC, I use a Uglystick Big water MH for pier fishing, I'm tall so 7ft works for me. For the low cost and warranty, Uglystick rods are a good option. The 6'6" M is perfect for kayaks, glad it's working for you. With as many fish you have caught on various Uglystick rods, maybe you should look into them as a sponsor, might help you some. I like the variety of inshore kayak fish but I would like to see you towed around by some big fish in your yak! Be safe... tight lines!
What about for bank fishing bass? I’m getting a 6’6” today and wondering if that’s too short?
Have 1 @ 9', 2 @ 7' & 5 @ 6-6!!! Love Them!!!
I got 2 of these for my kids , it was so much fun.
Waiting on my 7ft GX2 medium and will most likely pair it with Penn Pursuit III 2500
I just got UGLY Stick GX2 medium heavy with a ABU max z 40 is so balanced very happy. Just for carp and catfish is time for the new big hitter. If is as good as my old one great stuff if you ask me.
I caught a 16lb king salmon on my 7’ ft gx2 medium spinning rod paired with a Diawa revros 3000 size . Handled king salmon , lake trouts , brown trouts like a champ .
I loved my GX2 so much that when I broke mine after the warranty ran out, I repaired it myself and have been fishing it just as hard as I did before it broke. I have an Ugly Stik lite also. Both rods are 7’ rods and have served me extremely well. Great rods and definitely solid. Good stuff.
but yours broke. lol
playpen yep, it sure did. Broke it after I stepped on it by accident getting in the boat. No need to buy a new one when you know how to repair them 😉
Which is better? Gx2 or elite?
@@boz065 so you actually snapped the rod and broke it, how did you put it back together ? and where along the rod length did it break?
@@ARCSTREAMS yep sure did. It broke about 2 feet from the tip. I took a smaller rod blank and slipped it inside the two halves, epoxied them together, sanded it down to get the rough edges out and wrapped it like you would a guide. Epoxied the wrap and the results is pretty impressive. It’s actually stiffer in that spot so when I make a hook set it has a stronger backbone. Very pleased
I own three of these!!!
Just bought the ugly stick gx2 ultra lightweight for crappie fishing. My new year's resolution is to get back to fishing again, this time without the beer
Great vid 👍
I just got myself the GX2 so good
Love the ugly stick - used it for years
but they are not making them like they used to
Yep they are tough rods. Great review
Nice ... Must buy one .
Man, I just gave away my Penn Pursuit Combo 4 because the braid was cutting grooves in the guides. Think I'm going to switch to Ugly Stik, already ordered me a GX2 with a Penn Wrath. Hoping to incorporate the Penn Battle III, Penn Fierce, and Penn Pursuit 4 into my arsenal with Ugly Stik rods soon!
I have the medium heavy 7 foot and I think it has a good amount of backbone for anything inshore
I love ugly sticks too , I had diawa before and all(2) of them the tip broke without any hard pull, and I caught moray eel and shark on my ugly stick already and still looking good
Most people seem to have good things to say about the Ugly Stiks. Thanks for sharing.
Have 2 of these and have never had any issues landing fish, even big muskies accidentally hooked on a medium action haha
Already 3 y/o with ugly stik. Never fail
My older one was good for basic river stuff but I can for sure tell the difference in bass fishing for feeing the bite compared to my pflueger president combo.
How do these feel on sensitivity
Hey JC. My local kmart is closing and they had some ugly sticks in liquidation(40% off) last time. I might pick one up.
Going for vintage reels aka Mitchell 300 and Shakespeare 2052 or 2062 as they are bulletproof, paired with a modern touch of this rod
Great review man I jus got my rod in today and it's pretty cool except for a little piece of epoxy chipped off the very bottom where it holds the hook keeper and I was jus wondering if would that effect the rod in any type of way because I jus hate getting brand new stuff and find something wrong with it but other than that the rod arrived in perfect condition
Edit: sorry its the ugly stik elite
Hello. I live in Corpus Christi, Tx. Known for saltwater fishing. Guy at tackle store talking about Gloomis, Waterloo and Sarge brands. Not sure these are any better than Ugly Stick.
What a good reel to pair the ugly stick with
I have 2 of these paired with Penn Pursuit iii 2500s. They work from crappie to 20# catfish.
I live in on Big Pine Key. Florida Keys. I caught a 30 pound bull shark by accident on my 5ft light ugly stik gx2 combo. Factory combo. Like $40. All I did was put 15 pounds braid on the small reel. 15 pound braid with a pieces of 80 pound mono and the mono to small diameter piece of steel leader. 3/0 circle hook. Fought the shark over 30 minutes. Had the rod totally bent in half. It didn't break. Landed it.
They are good hard to break and last long seen a video guy pulling a boat with them
I love ugly stiks 😁 just bought another one yesterday
Time for the heavier one and a big snook video JC! It’s been awhile
thanks
hi JC - I own many Ugly Stix rods and never broke one yet.. Cheap & durable... Love catching fish with them and the other guy got skunk with $100Rod... Hahaha
SKUNK, Lol ... Awesome !!
Really enjoy your videos brotha. Was just wondering if that rod might be too heavy after a short time of use with lures?
Just was wondering. Also is that rod a two piece? Thanks and God Bless. Cheers from
Brownsville, Texas
The rod is two piece. I fish with this rod with the Penn Pursuit 3 4000 reel for 4 to 8 hours at a time and don't feel it's heavy, but I did construction work for 35 years and currently work out at the YMCA, plenty of muscle. There are much lighter set ups to use, but I believe there's higher price to pay. The combo I mentioned cost about $80 total. My friend was telling me he paid $330 for his 3000 sized spinning reel combo that is a lot lighter than mine. I figure I can have four of my set ups to his one, a much better deal for me. Thanks for commenting.
@@RadReelingFishing uea I see what you mean when it concerns 4 to his 1. Really impressed with your success with the two piece using lures. Really glad you replied. Thanks for posting man. Really dig your content.
God Bless☕📖👍😁
Cheers from Alton, Texas. I just got my first Ugly Stik and my fishing permit. Can't wait to teach myself how to fish.
Good info brother, thanks for sharing. 😎👍✌🖖🐟💥🛎
Very informational and short love this im just starting to fish do you think this is a good rod to start with
Yes
Rad Reeling Fishing i do have a question when you buy it does it come with a reel or is it only. A rod
@@truebleww8039 Walmart sells individual rods and combos. Amazon is out of the individual rods, but they have a combo here: amzn.to/2O0s59X (paid link)
Picked the newer sienna 1000 reel and looking for a 6’6” L or UL GX2 for rainbows. Great review.
Awesome ✌️ definitely getting one and the reel👍
*Well JC... You know you're life ain't that half bad... so long as you never get beatin with an Ugly Stick®* PS I like the 6'9" Medium Ugly Stik Tiger® Elite Spinning Rod MODEL # USTE1025S69 and it's 10 to 25 lb line rating as it still allows the light bite feel can cast a bit farther than the other smaller version rods... Thank Buddy... gw
Thanks. I don't own an of the tiger rods. I'll have to add one to the mix and see how it works out.
Love my GX2 Rods I own three of them won't use anything else
I use the medium heavy 7 , throw any Penn reel on it and you set
I'm sold. Getting one tomorrow.
Awesome news. Thanks for watching.
I have a 7' medium heavy GX2 paired with a Calamus X2 3000 reel and love it. I have a 6.5' medium fast one as well. I would be interested in your thoughts on the stock reel and the overall sensitivity of the poles. Additionally, have you experienced the Ozark Trail Grit Stick. I bought these for the kids and they are very nice poles, seem like rebranded Ugly's except for the someone uncomfortable handles. I would suggest someone spending a little more, though, and getting the Lews Xfinity Spinning Rod.
Thanks for watching. The reels I use are Penn Pursuit 3 and I love them. I haven't tired any of the other rods you've mentioned. The sensitivity is great for the type of rod it is.
Love the Ugly Stick
I just bought one and equipment, I'm ready to go do some fishing.
Same
Just got one
Wow, I use these! Inexpensive and they work very great! In the Kayak, I am using 6ft GX2 spinning rods. Fishing is expensive and these rods keep the price down also.
We need more guys like you showing people you don't need so spend big bucks to catch some great fish.
When I show people my fish pics, they don't believe I am using Ugly Sticks! Thank you!
I've been buying Ugly Stiks for 40 years. Never broke one. These rods are the best value on the market, imo.
I have two Ugly stick Gx2 including this 6'6 in two piece. Found it like new for $12 dollars at the flea market this past week. Year back I found the 6'0 gx2 for $3 dollars with the tags still on the rod because the reel was missing the handle.
The top half that holds the reel slides all the way up to the hook hanger. It's not supposed to be anchored. I still don't understand what you claim to be broken.
GX2 Medium Heavy 7’ w BG Daiwa is best rod you can build without breaking bank for everything besides surf n offshore. And it can even handle some light surf if you need it to.
do you have the 7 foot rod and reel combo and if you are they both light or is it just that the 6,6 foot rod n reel that is light
I know have three and no problems yet. The quality control can be a little poor so gotta be choosy when picking them out but never had one break!
Thanks for watching and commenting.
I totally agree with you. I own the same 6'6" Shakespeare combo for 3 years and love it. My problem is it is also my wife and sons favorite too. Lol I also have a 8' catfish and a 7' intercoastal. I was thinking about buying 2 more GX2 and I was thinking about the 7'? Any experience with the 7' ? We don't kayak fish. Thanks
I have the 7 it’s a good size feels goons with a 6000 size reel
@@aidancampbell2656 Cool I just bought 2 used them a few times working well
@@aidancampbell2656 i have a mitchel 300 c the new ones ,would you know what size this is? or where i might find this info on the reel?
Sir i recently purchased this rod and reel is rapala s type 50. My question is can I use suffix monofilament line as a mainline which is 0.70 mm and 45 kg
Hello I will like to know which rod is butter the GX2 or the catfish rod
I love my ugly stix 7ft and12ft that covers everything
I’m just a beginner and I started getting into fishing and starting to love it , would u recommend this for me?
Im my opinion yes, ive been fishin since i was a young kid. Once i learned how to cast a spinning reel, ive had an ugly stik in my hands ever since.
Is this rod still viable for peir fishing. Going out today on the peir to fish.
Any experience with the 4 piece gx2 ugly stick? I’m going to the Philippines soon and Im looking for a combo to bring in my luggage so I can fish there.
Im new to your channel.
Can i cast a 40g jig with Ugly Stim M?
I'm curious to hear what brand of braid people who say there eyes have grooves in them use...the only braided line I've used that makes grooves is spiderwire...I've never had a problem with other braided lines like powerpro but for some reason spiderwire makes grooves..I'm curious to hear others thoughts on this...oh and Subscribed 🤘🤘🤘
I use spider wire on my ugly and have never had a problem except if I got hung up I lost a lot of line by cutting it
@@jimwarren6283 it could be possible my rods were defective then...thank you for your reply tight lines🤘
Love my 7' med fast gx,2 what do you think of the stainless guides do they last and do they grove easy
My guides are in great shape and I fish with them in saltwater all the time.
Have watched many of your videos learned check of alot my question you Always talk about the 6' 6" gx2 medium how about 7' gx2 medium
Sure
I love my Gx2
I think I’m gonna get that rod and pair it with an ugly stik spinning reel, see how that works out
