  • Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) of NARC Arcade in 9:58 (2,047,550)
Goal: Finish the game as quickly as possible.
Time starts when you land on the ground on the first stage (0:32) and ends when you open the final door in the jackpot room. (10:30)
    Notes:
-This game runs at 55 fps, that's why scrolling isn't smooth at 60 fps.
-I lost exactly 271 frames (4.92 seconds at 55 fps) while collecting the 24k gold in the jackpot room. I did it to have a decent score at the end.
-At first glance, it looks weird that the character can walk without being hit by all enemy fire. But believe me, I died very often. What to look for is the shadow of the bullets. You only die if a bullet's shadow collides with your shadow.
-I lost a life with the boss at the end. It was a bit faster that way.
-I lost a bit of energy here and there. I should have worked more on those parts. It is possible to finish the game without losing energy. (Except maybe with the last boss)
-I might do another TAS of this game, but my goal will be to get a high score. But it will take much longer to do.
There is a video with a score of over 6,000,000 and it took 1 hour 18 minutes. It will be difficult and long to do better than that. • NARC Arcade 1CC High S...

    ====Description====
Narc (stylized as NARC) is a 1988 run and gun arcade game designed by Eugene Jarvis for Williams Electronics and programmed by George Petro, Todd Allen, and Eugene Jarvis, with art by Jack Haeger, John Newcomer, and Lin Young. It was one of the first ultra-violent video games and a frequent target of parental criticism of the video game industry. The object is to arrest and kill drug offenders, confiscate their money and drugs, and defeat "Mr. Big". It was the first game in the newly restarted Williams Electronics coin-op video game division. Shortly before its release, Williams acquired the video and pinball divisions of Bally/Midway.

Oh wow, you actually did one of the most notorious arcade games ever. Big thumbs up! 😀
Bleat "violent" or "disturbing" or "kid unfriendly" all you want. One thing and one thing alone defined post-crash American arcade games: _expensive._ If you wanted to make any progress, you had to spend, spend, and spend some more. This is a prime example. Unless you have Hakurei shrine maiden-caliber dodging abilities (Never pass up an opportunity for a gratuitous Touhou reference! 🙂), on every level except 3 and maybe 1, your life expectancy can be measured in footsteps. The fact that there are four buttons and threats frequently jump out of nowhere (sometimes literally) don't help either. And then there's the little matter of those extremely vital blue and green safe cards popping up _at freaking random._ The headquarters is just a death zone, where for most players the cycle is invincibility period, get shot full of holes, repeat. Ooh, ooh, the dogs! I _hate_ those miserable fleabags! As soon as one gets on you, it's too close to hit with either of your weapons, plus they're too fast to outrun, so dying is _completely unavoidable!_ And of course no discussion on "SNK Bosses" is complete without a mention of Mr. Big (no relation to SNK's actual Mr. Big, of course), who's quick and super deadly, and has the little complication that oftentimes you don't even know _where_ to hit him to do damage!
That went on a little longer than I expected. Ah well. Another fine effort, Prog61. I was going to ask if you could do one that prioritized speed _or_ points, but really, trying to do anything with this brutal game is painful enough.

The art style and gameplay is strongly reminiscent of Crime Wave (early 90s DOS side scroller with similar gameplay, plot, and parental violence concerns). My copy came on floppy disks.

One more thing... anyone get the notion that Williams only ever wanted a cutting-edge shoot-'em-up and the "War on Drugs" was just something that got slapped on? I mean, here are your mission objectives, per level:
    1. Grab the red -doormat- safe card.
    2. Blow up enough enormous boiling vats to draw out the Doctor Spike Rush carrying the blue safe card, neutralize him, grab the card.
    3. Cross the bridge.
    4. Grab the silver safe card.
    5. Collect enough "ganja" pots to draw out the Sergeant Skyhigh carrying the green safe card, kill him, grab the card.
    6. Reach the top level of the building.
    7. Apprehend the ever loving crap out of Mr. Big using a total of three rockets. (Bullets _do_ damage him, but it's super hard to land enough shots to take him down.)
    8. Demolish that huge... _thing._ 😬
Confiscating drugs isn't required. Confiscating drug money isn't required. Arresting _anyone at all_ isn't required. Killing anyone besides your four primary targets isn't required. Destroying even one enemy vehicle isn't required. Keeping the ladies out for a stroll alive isn't required (you can _kill them all_ with no harm done besides the lost points). Looting the treasury, you'd better _believe_ that isn't required. Enforcing drug policy has the same status here as rescuing the prisoners does in Jackal... completely optional, only if you really want the points.

It's been years since I felt uncomfortable because of a video game. Since then, I completed some of the most violent titles, such as - Bulletstorm (possibly some people will disagree with me), Manhunt, MadWorld, Splatterhouse, Mortal Kombat...
And here comes NARC. I heard about this game for the first time in the JonTron episode. Since then, it made me not like this game at all.
Throughout the entire TAS run, I felt so uncomfortable, and horrible. It looks like a great game, but no matter how I look at it, the design, enemies, overall theme, and main boss - I would not be able to complete the game or even complete the first chapter.
Well, at least the run looked cool. Expecting for more!
