Portugal colonized Brazil 400 years ago so you can say our language is as similar as UK english and USA english =)
They are pretty different. Portugal's cringy for us and the accent is very different, some terms have different meanings too like: Rapariga means prostitute here in Brazil but in Portugal means young women.
You learn the local portuguese and never really cares about the other because we can understand pretty well.
There are other types of Portuguese too that are very different, most of them from African countries.
