The first time I heard this song was in 1989. I was a newly married young man who had been sent overseas. I was confident that she would stay as faithful as I was, but it wasn't to be. There is a line in the song where he sings, "I knew before you let me know." Well, I knew because mutual friends saw her with someone else. I was crushed and it affected me for a long time. I had kept all the letters and read them, but after a while, I realized that was not good for me. So many lines in this song seemed like they were written just for me and my situation. It took years to be able to truly trust again, but now I am going on 17 years of marriage with my wife (2nd) and have an awesome 15 year old son. What caused me so much pain and despair, actually was one of the best things that could have ever happened to me. If there are those who listen to this and feel sad, there is nothing wrong with that. Just know that there is hope and happiness even after devastation. When I listen to this song now, I am not sad. I realize it is a beautifully written, and performed, song about a sad situation. Phil's songs have touched countless people and our world is a better place for his songs being in it. Thanks Phil.
Married 1986 divorced 1991 she put me threw hell. Remarried 1993 and this September will be 30 years. I have a 33 year
old son ( step son ) and 2 Grandkids ( boy 11 girl 8 1/2 ). All that pain was worth it because what I have now is PRICELESS!!!

I fell in love with a classmate back in 1980. Not sure she ever felt it as much as i did. We used to play this on vinyl in my bedroom all the way back in 1982. We were 17 then. 42 years on and i still love this record. And eventhough I havent seen her for 20 odd years, i still love her. Always will i guess. Her heart still remains for sure.

I remember this song moved me so much as a teenager even though I hadn't really experienced this type of heartache. But tonight, every note makes my heart long for those carefree teenage moments. Thank you Phil for the memories. This song is so heartfelt and it is hauntingly honest and beautiful.

Just came across this link. Reading all the comments, it all rings true to everyone. "Face Value" was a rare piece of music back in 1981. Way ahead of itself for the sheer variety of sounds & emotions. I must say, I do feel the best part for this tragic song is when he hits the lyrics at "Just remember" @ 2:41 and that small orchestral crescendo that hits at 2:57. At that moment you can't help but to recall a distant memory. AMAZING SONG.

The orchestral hits at 3:13 and 3:23 and the big one at 3:46 is simply amazing......some call it "the stab'....the whole track is genius.
Those bass lines, and so beautifully played by Leland. This is a timeless classic - as shown by so many of the comments. From the very opening bars thru to when you anticipate the stab by the orchestra and right to the end.
Anything " Phil". Anything. All of his music hits the soul. Single and with Genesis. Time won't change it. He's older but an icon.
I agree. His stuff with Genesis is amazing as well as his solo work. When I listen to the song, Mama or the album Face Value I am transported back to my teens and twenties. Phil is amazing ❤️

thank you for all the memories, sad, funny, romantic and for you Phil...I have grown up with you, in my perception, the greatest legend of all time...I have seen some of the greats in concert however you were the longest concert and the best especially the blues brothers at the end....I only had enough for two cigarettes and one beer and a ticket for you...and just when we thought you were finished..the blues brothers...classic..
I met Phil in a petrol station in england in the middle of the night playing phil on a tape in my little mini and my sister didn't believe me that it was phil, he was was filling up his own petrol so she went over to him, I shyly walked behind her in her shadow...he spoke to us and I couldnt say a word....i was so gobsmacked...my idol at the time was right there in front of me...I was so young...he explained that this was the only time he could go out without being recognised...oops! I have always loved your music and think your one of the most talented musicians in the world...thank you for your sharing, your soul and your incredible heart...thank you thank you thank you...my sons father has passed on now however your music brings me closer to him every time i listen to you....the memories....the love....the laughter....x

@@cjturner2008 you are quite wrong. Where did you get that stroke idea? He’s had an unfortunate back/spinal surgery for issues from drumming for 60years nonstop, that has left him a bit numb in his right leg years ago and recovery is a long road. He sits to sing now and he’s earned that leeway. He has been touring up until last year with his own band and was set to tour in 2020 with Genesis, but we know how 2020 goes, so due to everything, the Genesis reunion is set for 2021 now.. it’s in the description of the song..
