Not to disparage the US efforts but to ignore the RAAF efforts or claim that Guadalcanal was the first victory over the Japanese-both Kokoda and Milne Bay were Aussie victories completed before the Marine victory.

      I agree with the OP, however this movie like many others were made to get the support of the American public at home. In all the theaters where people watched movies like this there was advertising for the sale of war bonds to help fund the war efforts. For the most part few in the US knew anything about the Aussies or New Zealanders accomplishments fighting the Germans or the Japanese.

    Ok, I am confused about Jeans husband getting killed at Dunkirk, I can think of no reason other than her husband was British for him to be killed at Dunkirk, the Eagle Squadron wasn’t formed, and as far as I know there wasn’t any American/Canadian units there either, I hope it gets explained as it will bug me. I don’t remember the scene from the first time I watched this film so fingers crossed 🤞.

    • @dalewarke7763
      @dalewarke7763 Před 10 měsíci

      When Dunkirk occurred America was still neutral. It is possible Americans volunteered to fight in British units. The US Army may have had some observers in the area as well. In New Guinea in 1943 had the US 8th Army on the island which included 5th Air Force commanded by Lt. General George C. Kenny. Their main objective was attacking Japanese ships in the area.

      "allandavis8201," It is certainly valid to question the historical accuracy by date of when and where the American forces were involved; from the Comments apparently NOT in Dunkirk. So the screenwriter and the fact checking department at 20th Century Fox Studios need a demerit; their wrists slapped. But from the perspective of the audience getting swept up in the story I think the more important point was that Jean lost her beloved spouse due to the international conflict in which his bravery and selfless participation could not overcome the inevitable: K.I.A., killed in action. The sadness that overwhelmed her may have contributed to her sharing her talent as a singer, a songstress extraordinaire, displaying her ultra-sweet femininity anywhere the American forces were stationed with minimal consideration to herself to the potential for danger.

      From the manufacturers' point of view, a sinister marketing practice for sure, to maintain the fighting men's addiction to nicotine so as to ensure they'll continue the habit, but paying for it like everyone else stateside, once they return to civilian life.
      "elgato894," It's one thing to Comment on the proliferation of individuals smoking, yet it's so obvious to all why bother? For the really curious, including those anxious to have their Comment available for consumption within CZcams Universe, the reason is understood when one performs 30 seconds of research, online. But to insinuate that ALL THESE PEOPLE are only smoking because it looks "pretty COOL" when their bodies are likely to be ripped to shreds and burned beyond recognition due to the DEADLY circumstances they find themselves in, well, surely "looking cool" is the furthest thing on their minds.

    Relax Oldfart, the movie is not a documentary. Just a story. Back in those days most of these movies are just about Americans and attempted only show things in a very favorable view of them. As time went by there was plenty of time to show the ugliness of war. But the last thing on there mind was showing all the people working to win that conflict. I don’t watch old movies like this to get the details of the conflict. The first words of the movie says this is a story of men.

    This the worse war movie I have ever seen. I give it a ZERO on a scale of 1vto 10.
