      The crap thing is when they don't have a "no tip" option on the tip screen, almost tricking you into thinking you have to tip, instead you have to click "custom amount" and there you can find "no tip" or enter $0, but not everyone realizes that and they bank on people feeling uncomfortable asking where the "no tip" button is. • @shawndevoid9813
      @shawndevoid9813 Před 5 měsíci +3

      In historically-typical tipping situations- ie, full service restaurants and bars, generally, the worker DECIDES to rely on tips. You have more control over the “wages” you make- by working in establishments where you know the tips are usually good and giving excellent service. In this kind of situation, you can make a lot more than standard customer services wages. It’s a bit of an art and you don’t get to start out at the top. You have to work your way up through diners, locals bars, etc. It’s honestly a bit of art. But now, all these other minimum wage, counter-service jobs are making consumers feel like they should get tips, too. Another thing that’s driving the conversation is mandatory tipping to other restaurant workers that generally don’t get tipped, like cooks. Cooks tend to be very hostile towards servers (in general) and especially about the fact that they make the food, but don’t usually make as much as servers do. If they want to make more, there’s nothing stopping them from being servers.

    • @sophieloves7092
      @sophieloves7092 Před 4 měsíci +7

      They don't rely on tips, you're only paying the workers wage if you tip. What people do not understand is that in every state the law says that if an employee doesn't make at least minimum wage within tips that the employer has to make up for that. They just said that at the beginning of this broadcast and it's actually the first time I've ever seen it said in a news broadcast. Employers want us to tip because if we don't then they have to pay their employees minimum wage to make up the difference, that's law. No matter what every employee who can be tipped by law is making at least a minimum wage. Your tips are not extra that they get to keep in most instances. And in many places tips are pulled together in order to pay the wage of every employee and if it goes over a minimum wage for every employee then they can split the difference but the employer could also keep the money. But you don't need to worry about whether or not people are only bringing home $2 an hour because that's not possible.

When you tip a waiter it’s at the end of the meal and you tip based on how good a waiter they were. It also motivates them to deliver good service but with tablets they’re asking for the tip up front. How can I decide what to tip you until I’ve seen what kind of job you’ve done and what motivation do you have to give good service when you’ve already been given your tip? Years ago tipping was presented as an after service gratuity to thank a service provider (ie server, taxi, hair stylist) for good service. Or for briefer interactions (ie cup of to-go coffee) the tip might just be a bit of change. Now with electronic payment its likely to be an app asking for $1 - 5 tip for any purchase for all kinds of transactions. Lots of new businesses have started asking for tips because of the ease of doing so. Definitely confusing for consumers. The employees are paid to a great degree by the employer, and service is included in the price.

These waiters without tips have an annual income of $4,600 before taxes. After taxes it's less. He makes it sound like that amount is just enough to get by and any other amount he would have to charge the customers more so he can just profit more. He just wants to maintain his high profits. It's not like he would be greatly affected if he kept the same prices buy raised their wage by $5 / hour. America is and has always been based on greed and taking advantage of others and the system. If you're talking about a waiter, it's not weird at all unless you've somehow never been exposed to it. That's what "full service" is--They're there to take care of whatever you need beyond just bringing food. That's an integral part of visiting a restaurant with waiters. Their pay structure is traditionally designed around the idea that the better the work they do, the more they make from being tipped. And as mentioned in the video, tipped workers are legally paid less than minimum wage because it's anticipated that tips make up the difference. Otherwise, you'd just be paying a higher price with the "tip" already a part of the overall cost. Maybe it's better to go back to that, but changing a national culture, however dysfunctional it's become, is near impossible except by decades of gradual adjusting.

      The first question you have to ask, which isn’t being asked in the video is. Can the restaurant afford to pay a living wage? You’ll find that most restaurants can’t afford to paying a living wage because profit margins are so small. Did you know that only 20% of restaurants survive after 5 years. Restaurants can’t afford to pay a living wage. You really are better off getting a fast food job.

      I just went out to dinner. Two pizzas and a dessert. We drank water. $76. $12 was a “service charge” which was not a tip. So,essentially, our pizzas, about 12” each, were $26 each. Why not just charge on the menu items??? We had no idea that we would be charged this fee, which came to 21 percent of the bill. Because it was hidden from us, we probably won’t go back. But this happens to us when we do go out every few months and it’s upsetting.
      One of the questions I have to ask: how much does it cost that business owner in fees, taxes, permits, etc? Because from what I know, Asia and Europe do not charge fees, and the tip is included, and their prices are comparatively the same as our menu prices. So something is going on in the US. Maybe we need to restructure restaurants and food places in terms of taxing and permits.

      It's a problem everywhere in North America. And there is no sub-minimum wage except for commission work (such as newspaper delivery or flyer delivery which reliably pays less than minimum wage an is on of the few/only occupations to do so.
      Servers all get minimum wage worth of income guaranteed by law or else the employer is committing a crime. The key is that employers can _deduct_ up to a certain percentage of that minimum wage if they get paid tips. Employee still always gets at least minimum wage, oftentimes much more.
      The states already have their minimum wages (though some is just the federal rate) which already apply to food service, so any changes would be raising minimum wage for _all_ workers.

I frequent lots of restaurants, and on average most of the good servers and wait staff tell me they make bank on tips. I see many driving nice new cars and more than a few are homeowners and live a good life. The problem is with tipped workers at businesses that do not attract many customers. If you are a good server who is working in a low end business my advice is to seek a job change either to a busy location, or to something with a solid hourly wage if that is what you need.
