  • Follow along as I hunt archery elk with some good friends in this 3 part series that I'm calling: Backcountry Hunting with Horses & Mules. In part 1 we pack in and set our camp, cut and yard in wood for the season, and get ready for 2 full weeks in the backcountry. Part 2 & 3 will follow showing the hunt itself. I hope you enjoy watching.

    I really enjoyed that video. Not many people show the packing up and packing in, the set up etc and that’s the part I enjoy the most. Thanks for sharing

    Love the palomino. He/she (forgot to look underneath!) certainly seems to understand his job.

    You gotta have so much respect for working horses and mules. They’re so beautiful and tough. ✊🏽😌 Awesome country!

    Mules do everything so much easier than a horse when it involves rough- country and packing with the exception of a few rare horses, nice video, .......

    You guys look like you having a blast, I cant wait to see part 2. I have to ask when I see those smooth walking Mules, Why you are not riding Mules?

    • @MatherOutdoors
      @MatherOutdoors  Před 3 lety +3

      I would love to be riding my mule but have not taken the time to work with her in that regard. I don’t want to speak on George’s behalf, but I believe for him it’s a personal preference to ride a horse. Mules sure do excel in this country though.

    Why do you put those packs Brita instead of horizontal?. I would think that you'd want them lower to keep center of gravity lower.

    • @MatherOutdoors
      @MatherOutdoors  Před 3 měsíci +1

      While it is good to get the center of gravity low, it’s important to keep the packs weight riding on the top of the horses ribs and back. If they hang down too low it puts the pressure on their sides and makes it more uncomfortable for the horse. Ideally the packs are no more than 24-30” wide so they don’t interfere with the movement of the horses shoulders or hips. If you have a long skinny load you can barrel hitch them which puts the load horizontal. All mantied loads on this pack in were done with a basket hitch which stets them vertical.

    Nice video and good looking mules. I'm assuming that your not in a wilderness area, as you are using a chain saw?

      Thank you for the compliments. This camp was not located inside of a wilderness boundary, therefore a chainsaw is permitted.

      He was a quarter horse. Which is what I mostly use.

  • @sabresecuritydefenseconsul1308

    you folks are in bear country no long rifles or sidearms?

    • @MatherOutdoors
      @MatherOutdoors  Před rokem +1

      I don’t remember what we had this trip but we typically carry a leaver action rifle on one of the saddles and a handgun with our hunting pack. Mostly just black bears in this area and we haven’t had many issues with them.
