Hi
I remember being a kid just walking or playing in some park in Phoenix and these dust storms would tower over us. Seems terrifying now. It was honestly kind of fun back then.
Calvin Terkildsen that’s exactly I feel, we get like 3 dust storms every summer in Tolleson az
That_Typical_Duck 😭 I miss tolleson my house was HUGE and my mom wanted a small house because she says she is “old” and she is just lazy😒
I was telling my girlfriend about this happening in, Saskatchewan, Canada when I was a kid..

I've seen 2 AZ dust storms. The first one - when I saw it approaching freaked me the hell out. If I wouldn't have had a resident tell me what it was I would've thought God was pissed off! The 2nd one I was stuck outside in the desert. The sand stings your skin. I just had to cover myself up and wait it out. They are really intense.

no
you got that right
Not sand storm dust storm. One that is considerably higher than normal too. Phoenix sits in a desert river basin at the northern end of the Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert floor is made up of a thin lay of top soil that covers a hard compacted soil that is almost as hard as concrete. The only sand you will find in the Sonoran Desert is a course sand at the bottom of dry washes and dry river beds. Because of this we don't get sand storms but dust storms.

Imagine seeing this for the first time & being a person who watched the mist.
Reminds me of the dust storms in the Dust Bowl during the Depression. But those dust storms lasted for about 1 to 3 days for 10 years!
And were a LOT more violent.
Reminds me of Mad Max.

Iyad Al-Halis it's not fun when this happened I was an Arizona ( I live in Colorado but I go to Arizona a lot to visit my grandpa ) me and my mom were in the airport heading home and then suddenly I looked out and then I couldn't see anything so our flight was canceled so we stayed in Arizona for another 4 days till the airline could arrange us to get on another flight
Iyad Al-Halis
No...its not. It horrific. God people are so irrational. It stings and its actually painful
Iyad Al-Halis Meh I stayed in my house when this happend, it was weird looking out the window to only see dust though.
Not to mention this is WORSE than a sand storm just combine these together and you get Dust + thunder + lighting + sand + rain +valley fever = dust storm
Looking at these comments, I guess it depends on who you are. I'm from Colorado and witnessed my first sandstorm a couple weeks ago in Phoenix and it was one of the coolest experiences ever. They are often followed by huge lightening storms and a ton of rain and it was amazing to watch. I'm also a sucker for all thunderstorms related things but I thought it was absolutely amazing.
yesterday evening ( Monday 7-18-11) driving to work from Phoenix to Scottsdale, I was right in that dust storm and very scared and cried out loudly to my Heavenly Father : Please Father, You Who command the forces of nature withhold that terrible dust curtain till I arrive at work. Please my Sweet Mother Mary spread Your mantle over the car that no flying object can crash into it and causing harm or an accident. Thank God, I arrived safely and even earlier than ever and the dust curtain came over the moment I entered the nurses’ lounge. I was so thinking of the scared apostles in the boat during the storm. Thank You, thank You Lord.
the dust though comes thru everything and the irritating cough comes with it, you can actually feel that sand enter and irritate your throat, that’s awful.
RikiRibi
Riki Ribi it's scary?
My words for this:
Gaara has attacked
lol
Eziekle Crafts am not sure if you understood what he mean by gara has attacked 😐
I remember that, I was driving back from Cali, and I look back and I see road blocks and a massive wave of dust. When we got hit by it we where in the car, and we could barely see anything
I moved here about a year ago and your first one is always the scariest. I was driving back to my apartment when the dust storm rolled in and there was a car about 15 feet in front of me that went into the cloud first and it disappeared almost instantly couldn't even see tail lights
Sol.... Welcome to Arizona! These things aren't all that common.....just occasional. I'm in the mountains.....never seen one yet, up here. Wild weather sometimes, but that's all.
This reminds me of the storms in the movie Wall-e
For me it reminds me of the movie The Mist
For me, a coriolis storm from Dune.....
Yoo dust cloud is the DLC for June😂😂
cool!!! Ultimately more scary looking than dangerous.....except for planes sucking dust into the engines and folks with lung trouble...
then it blocks the vision and light, have your cars dirtied and more car accidents, and finally a great crowd in car wash centers.
milesmouse72 No extremely dangerous.
milesmouse72 no. These are very dangerous. They have enough strength to shove cars right off the road. Tons of accidents happen during these. These have ripped roofs off, downed power lines, ect.
Majestic Potato dang, I had no idea they were that strong
Majestic Potato umm no that happens in hurricanes and tornadoes this has never happened to me
@Calvin Clayton, I live in the Midwest, and we get snowstorms, but the snow melts. What do you do about all that dust? 😳😳😳😳😳 Why did the elevator stop working? Was it the dust? 😷😷
It was the dust/sand storm and many other things, like guys in pickup trucks with their rifle rack hanging in the back window, the scent of the Sonoran desert after a rain, the blatant starry nights, I never saw so many stars at night before, the beautiful Monsoon in the desert... all these things got into my blood, and I fell madly in love with Arizona.....and, I did have to leave it, but I always knew deep in my heart that I was returning forever.....only took me 25 years to come back to my beloved Arizona! 😍. I'm here to stay, only difference is I'm in the mountains now....still awesome as ever!! 😘
Oh my lord i remember this! I lived in Casa Grande at the time and it looked like a giant wall of dirt was being pushed over Arizona!

Man we are living in some disastrous times. If you work in an office building I would be growing some lettuce and a tomato plant in the office. You never know what might happen and when.
MotherofHells there has always been dust storms
MotherofHells it’s just a sand storm, this is completely normal.
This one was bigger than usual but haboobs/dust storms happen yearly
I drove through one of these outside of Phoenix, of course much smaller, but we had to pull off the road, visibility is like 5 feet. Very dangerous because others are getting off the road blindly.

Yes just after you cleaned House. Oh my . It never rained. I no longer live there. At times I wish I still did. Having non stop rain now. Snow ,ice. Oh well. Wear a mask, a good mask .
I was 6 when this happened. My mother was stuck in a Chevy's drinking margaritas. I was at home with my dad. It was so much fun to see the whole window covered.
(I was excited because we almost never get weather.)

And I miss you
Why CZcams? Why do you recommend a damn dust storm from 5 years ago?! 😩
This Natural phenomenon is happening for millions of years.
A bunch of bipedal creatures have set up habitations in and near the desert and they seem to be amazed by an action of wind on sand that's as old as time.
They're interesting creatures no doubt - light seems to shine from inside their shelters and they fly around in pods with wings.
Mom: Clean up your room.
My room:
I was working in a high rise in downtown Phoenix that day. We saw it coming and it was really scary when we couldn’t see anything but a brown cloud outside the windows for it seemed like a long time!
I remember this so vividly. I was out getting a cherry Dr. Pepper from the vending machine when it hit and all the kids in the apartment complex we’re going wild. It’s so weird thinking back on it now. 😂

Recently a guy got trapped in a dust cloud and he breathed in the dust and it instantly filled both his lungs to the top with dust. He was instantly turned into a mummy by the dry dust and partially vaporized. It was on all the local news channels. Very tragic

Massive snow storm in Phoenix, oh how things have changed.
I wish we had this more often
When some dry, late-evening, summer thunderstorms blow in across Phoenix & Sun valley they bring streaks of lightning and windy gusts of dust, but No rain! The desert air absorbs the rainwater and No rainwater gets to ground level. Such duststorms are common across the SW USA up to about +/- 200 miles north of the Mexican Border, but can happen in most remote, arid areas of western USA, all the way up to Canada!
The beauty of America. You can have a dust storm the size of a lake in one part of the country, and a blizzard engulfing your entire town on the other. And then hurricanes.
Dust storms are so darude, no manners.
