Actually the reason we call our guards soldier is as a way of relating with them in a respectful way.

Askari is the normal word in Kenya too, also includes non commissioned people in all security agencies. 'Soldier" is used just to make askaris to feel important and do you small favours. They dont like to be called "watchman" which is normally the word used.

In Kenya being politically correct is very important.....Don't demean people by calling anyone Watchman or Housegirls, or other names used by unethical and uneducated fellows, the same way we dont call people youtube guys, or social media guys we call them artists or content creators....strive to be politically correct....and be mindfull about ageism, that is discrimination based on age, you saw the young man, was somehow offended by saying hes too young to be a soldier...its good to be polite

In all languages I opine, it’s better to master de grammar first & foremost! Buy a Swahili grammar book, de rest wil come up based on constant practices! Enjoy ur stay & tak care!
