A little story about knots that changed my life. We were docked in Casablanca when I suddenly had problems with knots. My left hand started behaving strangely. The first officer contacted the head office in Gothenburg, which in turn fixed a doctor's appointment. Was relieved and flew home unaware that after 24 years at sea I had just finished my last contract I was diagnosed with Parkinson's which changed everything. Talk about becoming identityless. I'm not looking for sympathy on anything. I'm writing this to try to explain how incredibly much Joe's uploads mean to me. These movies have a hell of a lot of meaning to me. Many thanks for giving me a bit of my profession through you / Adam

Joe man, thanks for this video. And all the videos! I'm an Offshore Oil and Gas worker, but I work on FSO's / FPSO's. We call ourselves Semi Seamen haha. But now I have a one and a half year old, life is a lot harder at sea. Been Offshore in Qatar for six weeks and I miss him like mad but I mean this - your videos kept me sane. I watched them all, slowly but surely downloaded over a few weeks. You're an inspiration, and make me grateful for doing the job. They'll never truly know what it's like, but it is glorious at times and very hard at other times!

Beautifully clear demonstration of the basic knots. I learned all these in the scouts then used them at sea. I was also taught how to tie a bowline single handed - you know, in case you fall down a crevasse while climbing and have broken your arm. Funnily enough, never needed that, but the muscle memory is still there 50-odd years later, so in the unlikely event...

Marlinspike Seamanship is one of those things everyone should know, not just guys traveling on boats. Good stuff! Folks tend to not think of rope as a tool anymore, and that's sad. The best part is that after your line is worn out and can't be trusted to carry a load, you can turn it into mats and all sorts of other fun stuff.

Twas strange watching you tie the bowline as you do it in reverse. Scouts etc. are taught that the rabbit runs out of the hole around the tree and back down again.
The square knot is called a reef knot here.
