"BONKERS" | My LONGEST video yet. | Making Silicone Character Molds

- Mannn, I had a time making molds of this larger version of "AGUA".
I expected this to be EASY, but I ran into problems, and I document what it took for me to finally get production molds.
Also in this video: Header card design, DIY space character in progress, LUMECUBE LED light review, silicone mold venting techniques, and more.

NOTE: When making silicone molds of 3D prints, some print resins inhibit the cure of silicone, as shown in this video. I got Mold Star to work with my 3D print after it was sealed with the acrylic spray. But Mold Max, being tin-cure silicone, worked even without the sealer. The tradeoff is tin-cure molds don't have as long a life, and this particular one isn't as flexible.

BOOM SHAKALAKS … ok
I love how in his intro he says “crafsman” like it’s some mystical force of magic, this channel is truly a gem
It is a mystical force of magic.
He should add the "OOOOOO YEAH!" sound effect in, like he use to do for mod podge. LOL
@@MindVomit ;) I break out those vocals eeeevery now and then. You got me thinking about using them more, though! :D
My favorite was "stainless steeeeel"...in the etching video😂

Some summarizationary tips for anyone interested in making molds from 3D prints:
- These molds failed: Un-sealed 3D printed object, and primer-coated 3D printed object (even after sealing).
- Some suggest the molds didn't sit long enough to cure. This is not the case. These 4-hour cure silicone molds were left overnight.
With silicone inhibition, it would be goopy-galoppy like that indefinitely.
- I was able to get a successful mold once I sealed the 3D print with an acrylic spray.
- Some are saying to use specifically "Krylon Crystal Clear", but "Krylon ColorMaster Acrylic Crystal Clear" worked for me, as shown.
However, I advise going with "Krylon Crystal Clear", as it sounds like it's the go-to for most people.
- The 3D object that was sprayed with primer (Rustoleum 2x matte white) and THEN sealed with clear acrylic did NOT cure.
(Could be inhibition from a chemical in the primer spray.)
- I WAS able to get a mold of the primer-sprayed version using tin-cure silicone (Mold Max 40).
- Lastly, it depends on the 3D print resin. For example, I made the "SC" button molds from unsealed Anycubic Translucent Green. But objects printed using Elegoo Gray resin require a sealer.
Hope this helps someone else!
Can you pin this comment to stay at the top?
Thanks again great knowledge base thanks for sharing this.
So to clarify: the model printed in Elegoo Gray and sealed *only* with the Krylon clear sealer, did not seem to inhibit the platinum silicone? Because if that works, I could switch from tin to platinum silicone for my molds, and that would be really nice. (Platinum inhibited badly on every test I've done with 3D resin printed parts.)
I'm glad you showed your mistakes. Thank you. But this video did have me feeling frustrated for you
*BREAKTHROUGH*
For those who can be interested, I just found out (after some science and trial and error) a way to make platinum cure mold (MoldStar 15) from resin 3D printed object (Elegoo Mars) without using any sealer or special product.
The final results will probably be posted on the Crafters of the Universe Facebook group.
In short, based on what I have learned at this time, it is required to let the 3D printed item rest for about a day after the UV post-cure (there is probably some plastic offgasing occuring, imparing the silicone cure). Afterward, I clean my printed object with acetone, let them dry some time and then were ready to pour the silicone as per prescribed.
PS: I use Elegoo waterwashable resin which also caused me the same issues seen in this video at first.
"That little boom shaka laca right there" Never change CrafsMan, never change.
LOL! Thanks, buddy! I don't recall where I got that from, but it may have been NBA Jam.

Crafsman he just the best. Would love to see him do some more metal casting - bronze, silver or even gold into lost wax, for sure. Maybe try making a wax positive for reproduction using plaster and mold wax. Mmmm love me some Tonys and some slap yo mammas seasonings, especially in my Gumbo. You know whats wicked cheap to create your first positive for wax - dental alginate - cast your 3d print into aliginate, remove the print, pour in your jewellers wax, then make your silicone mold off the wax positive - super cheap - like Justin Wilson say,
- I gar-on-tee! Or if you 3D resing printing for some fine detail - print the mold instead of printing the positive - got to be a way to do that
👍
I agree, more metal casting would be cool!
I have a program to 3d print the negative of an object, aka the mold. I usually print in TPU silicone filament.
If you ever make a Crafsman sticker about not having a microwave let us know. I got a water bottle that needs one.

Catching up with all your videos, and this one, so far, is the funniest I have watched from you xD. Great job!
Love that you show both errors and successes
This just became my number one episode of yours to watch. I work remotely, and I just worked along with my own project with you crafting alongside on your thing. It was hilarious because I was able not to get distracted yet still follow along listening. I even learned plenty of useful information but side details and your jokes. I still have a couple bonkers and a bunch of other weird little toys from around that time. A couple doesn't have anything more than where it was made and nothing else, so I don't remember what they were characters from. I also hear about the elderly couple that forgot the date of their anniversary; you had me cracking up with your "win-win."
This episode has it all. Thank you :)
