The Khan wasn't bluffing either. Baghdad was razed to the ground, and its inhabitants were slaughtered to a man. A nuclear strike wouldn't have caused as much destruction as the Mongols.

There was never an Islamic Golden Age. It's a BBC fantasy.
If a bunch of backward mountain people came down and taking over the government it wouldn't be called a Mountain People Golden age.
Islam built nothing, it destroyed. All these 'great thinkers' were recent converts. The poison had not set in.

@Mendel - Yes there was an Islamic golden age like it or not but there are many misconceptions around it. Like the mongols they didn't really do anything themselves but opened trade and brought the great works of the greco-romans and Persians together(Many of their scientists were dhimmis). From the fall of Rome to the 12th century they were more powerful than Western Europe but the Byzantines were still the dominant power in the Mediterranean. As the Byzantines' power waned Western Europeans became relatively equal to the Muslims around the 12th century, had a slight edge from from the 15th to 17th century, and left them in the dust from the 18th century onward. The Ottomans only survived because of French and British intervention. They needed them alive to keep the central european powers and Russia in check.

Well even had he been bluffing the act of calling such a bluff would be an insolence that demanded reprisal. If you knew a Mongol khan to be bluffing would you call it? Of course not because the Khan's political currency is his word, and even if he has no intent behind a threat, said intent will become manifest in the anger that is provoked if ever his word is taken lightly.

Then it has the wrong name. The Mongol Golden Age was named after the mongol people and their conquests.
Islamic Golden Ages is trumpeted not in conquest terms but in supposed cultural and scientific achievements (que gasping Brit spinning lies). Therefore it should be called the Arabic Golden Age. The age they went out and conquered.

Not true mergan. According to Islamic and Mongol sources hulagu wrapped the caliph up In a carpet then had his horses trample him to death, saying with satisfaction that he spilt no royal blood.
Marco polo had a different tale but that wasn't it, he said that hulagu starved the caliph by locking him into a room with his treasures, telling the caliph "here are your treasures you love so much", encouraging him to eat them.

@@OrangeBurgerSC706 Islamic sources are written with hate. Marco polo's tale is argumentative. Mongol tale is too. The issue is that the 13th century Mongols did not record all of the events as they were mostly busy conquering. Moreover, recording history is more of a Greek thing as it is started there. But Nomadic people were not interested in pictures and scripts but power and wealth.

    • @OrangeBurgerSC706

@@aslof1069 the Mongols had their scribes record them, who were either Iranian or Chinese.
the arabs of course wrote with hate, but the iranians had no reason to mourn the abbasid caliphate or take any position in its defense, while Chinghis Khan destroyed Khorasan, Hulagu did not participate in many massacres (his only large one being the sack of baghdad)
Recording history is not a greek thing, at all. herodotus is often called "the father of history" but really Egyptians and Iranians had historical records in one shape or another (herodotus himself admitted he was not a reliable source and said he simply compounded a bunch of tales he heard partnered with his own flights of fancy).

Hulagu Khan, also known as Hülegü or Hulegu was a Mongol ruler who conquered much of Western Asia. Son of Tolui, a grandson of Genghis Khan and brother of Ariq Böke, Möngke Khan, and Kublai Khan.
Hulagu's army greatly expanded the southwestern portion of the Mongol Empire, founding the Ilkhanate of Persia, a precursor to the eventual Safavid dynasty, and then the modern state of Iran. Under Hulagu's leadership, the siege of Baghdad (1258) destroyed the greatest center of Islamic power and also weakened Damascus, causing a shift of Islamic influence to the Mamluk Sultanate in Cairo. (from Wikipedia)

This was no empty threat, Hulagu really did deliver on his word. Everyone inside the city everyone was slaughtered, Baghdad was razed to the ground and he ruined the fertile soil, infrastructure and irrigation of the surrounding area. The city still hasn't recovered to this day. This is a lesson on what happens when you pick fights that you can't win.

Hulegu was the man. Married a Christian woman. When Baghdad fell, 800,000 Muslims were put to the sword. The Christians were spared. So what the Mongols did in less than 2 years, was far more than the Christians of Europe did in 200. Defeat Islam. Damascus fell without a shot being fired after accounts of the Mongol might a year and half later. On a side note. Baghdad was the first recorded use of the gun. Dozens of Mongols used long iron wrapped bamboo tubes. Firing bullets from long distance and hitting targets. Cannons also, but far less effective. The Chinese invented gunpowder. The Mongols invented the gun.

"It was never a religion of peace, y'all!"
Well, it's ironic NOW, but it didn't used to be. Not saying that the religion is what supposedly 'created' the arab and persian civilizations of the middle ages - that claim is inherently ridiculous; it's the same as saying the west needed to be christian before they could get to the enlightenment... because yes, I'm sure they needed 1000 years of authoritarian theological aristocracy before they could learn sciencin' (extreme /s). There are christians that believe that btw, so many of those muslims believing the other one, aren't that far removed.
But sure, saying 'religion of peace' like that doesn't mean much unless you can back it up. Say, quoting the violent parts of the quuran with context, or quoting violent parts of the hadith.
