      I think it's not about fluency (that has to do with speaking), it's about listening comprehension, and that also takes time.

    • @viniciusnovaes6295

      Absolutely... Consistency is key. You gotta watch yourself and stay hungry (and humble). People take language learning lightly. It takes a hell of a time and effort to not only learn it but also keep it. Whenever someone tells me they gotta learn English quickly because they need it for work and so on, I just give them the truth. It's a long and windy road, my friend. (And it pays off)

    I'm Brazilian and an EFL teacher. It's also interesting how the sound of 'd' in the end of some words changes when the next word starts with a vowel. For instance, 'watched' (ch-t) and 'watched it' (ch-di/ch-dit). Most of my students initially think I'm saying the former when I'm actually saying the latter. They think 'appreciate it' is 'appreciate' (because the 'e' at the end of a word is not always silent in Portuguese [depending on the accent]).

    • @EnglishwithBrittany
      @EnglishwithBrittany  Před 16 dny +1

      @@rchrd_sn So interesting! If I’m not mistaken, we’re talking about the “flapped t” sound which changes “d” sounds to “t” sounds in many cases (in American accents anyway!). This can truly be so strange for learners, and probably should have been included in this video. Thank you for your comment!

    English teachers often draw a contrast between "short" vowel sounds, as in "ship," and "long" vowel sounds, as in "sheep." This explanation always bugs me because, for example, when you sing a song, you may want to make a sound "long" or "short" depending on the tune not on pronunciation rules. So I'm happy you're not using the terms "long" and "short" in your explanation!

      Please allow me to make one small correction: "Learning English would be easier if people spoke at the speed that you are speaking at in the video."

    The most irritating thing about learning English is that the way words are written and how they sound are different.
    "I'm gonna go" is short version of "I'm going to go". It's understandable because it's often written as it is on textbooks as one of the example of spoken English.
    But as for "She doesn't want to …" sounds "She sn't want to …". umm…
    If it's written as "She sn't want …" and explained it's shortened "She doesn't want" , like "gonna go" on textbooks, I would be able to understand more easily.
    If only there were a book for English learners that shows every example of those.

      I’m sorry you’re having a hard time. It can definitely be very irritating that spoken and written English are so different from each other.
      The way that English pronunciation is usually learned/taught is to start to recognize the ways in which spoken English is reduced and linked in regard to particular sounds (rather than a textbook full of examples phrases).
      The reason for this is probably that connected speech is used almost every time English speakers open their mouths - a textbook of phrases would therefore have to be enormous! And probably not very helpful.
      All I can say is… don’t give up!
