  • Watercolor pencils are everywhere. But tutorials are scarce, and few artists seem to use them. Here are 5 reasons why that might be (and why you should definitely try them out!).

I am a beginner with watercolor, and after a lot of research, started my watercolor journey with a 48 set of Goldfaber Aqua watercolor pencils combined with about a dozen Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils. I chose to start my journey with the pencils mainly because the mess involved with watercolor pans and palettes is a huge turnoff for me. I prefer being able to clean my plastic pallete when done with a piece and with the pencils can see what color I need easily. Because I am a senior on a fixed budget, cost is a huge factor. Your reasoning about watercolor pencils is spot on with my experience so far!!! And as a result, I don't expect to be making changes to my medium selection anytime soon. Great video!

Thank you for championing WCP's! I have full sets of a few major brands and used them for years, although not so much now. But yes, you can definitely do full, complex paintings with them, and I have done. Two tips that might be helpful for your viewers: 1. To save money, a cheap small white plastic cutting board from the dollar store is textured just like the more expensive brand WCP palette and works just fine and is great for a travel kit, and 2. To avoid weakening the wood collar (where the "lead" comes out) by getting it wet, I put a clear drop of water on my plastic palette or even a junk credit card and quickly dip the color "lead" into that drop of water, which will soften the pigment without risking getting the collar wet. A single drop of water will last a long time.

I love the flexibility of watercolor pencils, and that you've shown so many ways to use them. Like any other media, they take practice and getting to know them. I've used them in the Strathmore MultiMedia Sketchbook when traveling and they are so convenient, especially for plein air.

I use watercolour pencils for my compact handbag size sketchbooking kit. The primary colours, plus a white and a black, and a water brush pen, and one black marker (waterproof). It's perfect and I love the blendy loose combo of colours I can create with this kit. I'm not concerned about being precise or true to life in my sketchbook, so this works well for my little 'go everywhere with me' kit.

That has definitely been my experience too! You have by far the most comprehensive and helpful watercolor pencil videos. Love them. Ever since trying them months ago, I've barely touched regular watercolours. So much more accurate, and then like you say, less water, one container of water, less mess, I use a brush to activate them. I've used them in locations where they'd never allow regular watercolour. I tried an experiment the other day, I coloured the "painting", and then used a spray bottle and misted it, everything popped instantly.

The thing that I don’t like is when you see the lines where you’ve colored when you apply the water. I’ve learned to not use too much pressure and color in small circles and add more layers to get darker colors.

Thank you for this video. I have several sets of water- and colored pencils. I can count on one hand the times I've sat down to use them. What I drew turned out better than I expected but I admit, I didn't activate them with water. I recently got the small set of Inktense and made one small painting. The drawing wasn't great but I love the high pigmented color. I'm pretty sure I'll be trying all the watercolor pencils soon. I want to come up with some designs for Christmas cards. It's an assignment I'm giving myself remembering back to a calligraphy class where we were tasked to come up with a Christmas card to donate to a local Senior Center's Giving Tree. I spent eight hours immersed in just doodling with a Hunt nib and several ink colors. I produced five cards and found a favorite color ink. So, that was a great day of practice disguised as play. Seems I have to trick myself into creative time in order to explore. Thanks again. ❤

I’ve recently been using traditional paints because I wanted to learn how to use them, but more and more, I’m missing my pencils. I think I’m going to start doing mixed pieces so that I can incorporate both! I struggle to very small brushes due to a medical condition, and using a WC pencil makes it so much easier to do the small, intricate details in things.

On peut même changer les teintes sur des motifs de fleurs sur tissus par exemple, pour en changer la teinte! Comme je fais de la courtepointe, j'adore en autant que l'on ne lave pas trop souvent la pièce j'imagine.

I have a large set of Faber Castell watercolour pencils and that palette you use in the video. Is there a difference between brands of watercolour pencils?

To use the palette no. But in general yes as cheaper types of WC will feel more dry, break more easily, be less pigmented.

Hi, what is the watercolour paper brand you mention at 5:10 straight after you talk about the Stillman and Birn Beta sketchbook? Do you have a link, please?

I tried them when Derwent watercolor pencils with graphite first came out and they faded. Inktense is INK not watercolor. Different animal altogether. These are good for coloring books and staining t-shirts, etc.

Urban sketchers use yellow because it's hard to keep theirs clean

I find them too pale. Maybe I'm doing it wrong.

What brand are you using ? It could easily be it when they're not pigmented in the first place.

I,m sorry but you just reinforced my reasoning for not using watercolor pencils. I see no advantage to using them and plenty of reasons not to.

That's completely fine, not everyone needs to love the medium. At least you know for sure now 😁

i'[m sorry..this is silly...if ur using ur pencilS in the exeat same way u use watercolors ...then ur just using watercolors....ur just using the pigments from the pencils....UR NOT USING THE PENCILS ..AS PENCILS!!!.....

I touched on that clearly in the video, and if you keep watching, I use the pencils as pencils.
