Mainly cuz they finally realized that everyone's canon sizes are very far apart from each other.
This game tackles themes around death in such an interesting way. Hearing what that boss is kinda threw me for a loop. If I lived in that world apart of me would be in that thing...that's crazy....and this games answer to prevent the human desire of death being seeked out, is to seal away the only thing that can do it. The idea that humanity willingly wants its demise. Goddamn I don't remember this game being so complex in its depressing themes.

I think this boss fight is super creepy. The fact that ALL of humanity wishes for death deep down and in turn creates Erebus is so disturbing. However, I do have a theory that Atlus is linking all these games together (P3,4,5) and is slowly building to the fact that humanity is gaining the will to live. In P5 you change the whole public's cognition. However, we still dont know if Mementos was/is the entire planet's cognitive palace or if it's just Japan. I could go on but I think it would just be way to long.
Kind of close. Even though the themes of the neo-era mainline games are different, they are interconnected in terms of psychology. Persona 3 give a concept of the evil within humanity's heart. The Dark Hour is a worldwide event as proven in the movie, though the Shadows were concentrated in Tatsumi Port Island, the place of the Shadow research. The Abyss of Time kind of reveal part of the truth of the researchers motivation to bring the fall; letting Erebus to make contact with Nyx to end all lives.
For the P4 and 5 teams, the events are concentrated on the towns/cities they live. The Midnight Channel/TV World is the domain of Inaba's collective unconsciousness/cognition, while mementos is the domain of Tokyo vice versa. However, considering how the themes, though different but interconnected, if the dark influence spreads, it might lead to disastrous results by chain reactions. In a sense, the generations post 3, making the right choices kind of ensure that the past teams efforts won't go in vain. It was kind of proven in Arena when the surviving SEES were alarmed by the high Shadow reading in Inaba December 2011, but put to an end by the Investigation Team lead by Yu.
Royal and Scramble suggests researchers attempting to pry into/access the cognition/Shadow world, even worse, might try to initate their events out of their selfish desires. This also enforces Jose's statemts of more beings watching over humankind and "they" can't humans be. What he likely mean is the past generations, the Velvet Room residents and past/current/future enemies that the generations have to face.Considering the events, it can be assumed that the P5 gen stories will continue for a while.

The upright Death card represents not just physical death, but also metaphorical death and change. It forms the boundary between "normal" mysteries (love, kings and queens, strength and sacrifice) and more esoteric ones (heaven and hell, sun and moon, final judgement). Individual humans may die, but humanity as a whole must retain the will to live, thrive and grow, as more and more passing generations continue to build it into greatness. What SEES was trying to stop was the will of humanity as a whole giving up, and letting Nyx end the world as a result, and fretting over one man's sacrifice almost dooms humanity again.

Every year, Erebus grows larger. It just feels like the seal is going to break anytime now. So many wishing for the release of death. So many wishing for it all to end already. It didn't feel like this back then. Or maybe it did?

@@shibeking1809 People always say this, but it really wouldn't. Death is the theme of the game sure, but it's one of the many themes. People harp on the idea of idea of "death" as the game's theme, but it's a lot more than that. The themes of choice, responsibility, and how you choose to live your life are even more important to the message the game's trying to get across. If the Protag came back to life it'd be fine honestly

I know people have their issues with the Answer, but man no boss has ever yanked at my heart out of no where like Erebus has. It’s such a shockingly sad, yet tragically obvious, reason why it exists. All people, at one point or another, wish for death in some way. Even if for the briefest moment, entertaining the idea of dying helped give birth to this thing. It makes me tear up every time the characters come to that realization. It also makes this interesting dichotomy between the Journey and the Answer. In the Journey, the lesson is that even though death is inevitable, we shouldn’t live every waking moment in fear of it. In the Answer, the lesson is even though death is inevitable, we shouldn’t be yearning for it so much that we forget to live. This game is something else man

I would argue P5 is about rebellion along with abuse of power, not just society
4: Something something, the truth
I, uh, don't know about that one. 3 deals with death and its inevitability, yes- but it's also surprisingly optimistic. Life's too short to mourn about death- so live your life to the fullest and, when you do pass on- don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.
4, in contrast, deals with truth and accepting yourself- it's arguably darker in some aspects then P3 is, in the sense that the truth in P4? It hurts. The truth is ugly, it's terrifying- it's all those things and more- but it's still the truth. Be honest with yourself- even if you don't like it, you still have to accept it. And once you accept it- once you accept the ugliness- you can move on and live happier.
5 is... simultaneously incredibly optimistic while being incredibly depressing once you take a look back at it. Let's break it down real quick- 5 deals with society and freedom- the corruption of society and how it's so corrupt, it needs kids to fix it. And they do! They convince humanity to simultaneously reject Yaldabaoth and believe in the PTs and restore order to society- bringing about peace and happiness-
Except not really, because turns out society just sucks and the status quo continues. Joker gets arrested by the cops and government, who, even absent Yaldabaoth's influence, still want to put an innocent man away and ultimately only gets out because of his Confidants- and it's the point that Atlus acknowledges, that society's just too huge, too large to change completely without needing an enormous amount of power. It's frustrating, but simultaneously, it's *realistic*- because society's not something you can fix 'just' by stealing hearts- and it's hugely different then every other Persona Game, where there's no real answer given as to how one ought to address such an issue- because as it turns out, Atlus can't fix society. Not unless Yaldabaoth or another Demiurge shows up.
What about P1 and P2?
I wonder if the phantom thieves killed erebus completely inadvertently? They stole mementos's treasure which is humanities palace isin't it? If that's the case humanity's hearts will no longer wish for death. Futaba wanted to die and thought she should die but after the change of heart she did not want to anymore.
Doubt it, Erebus is humanity’s subconcious will, no human realises this. The memento’s treasure on the other hand, people will admit to some degree.

Beside, The Holy Grail came from humanity's wish to be ruled by unknown power so they can lead their life without worry while Erebus came to fruition from humanity's wish to touch death, to embrace it, to know it, think of those suicidal people, Erebus born from such minds. The thing is, human fear death but they seek salvation in it too. Erebus becomes twisted because of it
Mementos isn't the Palace of humanity, just the one that belong to Tokyo's masses. And The Holy Grail is the representation of the desire for perfectly orderly society, not for death.
Put this way. Royal added a new section of Mementos in the third semester. The reaper still haunts the halls of this new section despite the theives taking Humaity’s treasure. Ergo, Erebus still lives, and Door-kun is still the lock.

or 3(for a more convoluted story line)
3.Every Persona User joined forces and enter the Collective Unconscious and there they can make a big impact to the world and using all of their strength to free Door-kun

I think that those two events took place at different times. Elizabeth fought Erebus three years after the events of P3 it's implied that she had gotten stronger. I don't remember when she fought the other two, I'm assuming you are talking about PQ? That takes place way earlier. Before Shinji even died.

Elizabeth heavily restricted herself against the Reaper and still was very close to winning, and for all we know she could have let Zeus take control.
This Erebus was thousands of years in the making, with countless people feeding him with power from their desire for death which explains its immense power.
It's so strange for me to see people switch Personas while playing. I beat 3 & 4 with Orpheus and Izangai only. I beat 5 while playing normally, and I don't know how I managed so many at once.

Kinda late but no they didnt. What the Phantom Thieves defeated was the wish for humanity to be controlled, a wish far more weaker and less vital than the wish for death. This is also why the PT could kill Yaldbaoth without any worries (since the desire for controll is not a vital desire) while Nyx cannot and should not be killed. Nyx psyche stand as the basis of the human unconscious, the moment Nyx dies humanity does too.
