  • A story for the ages.. Serena Williams, having won the 3 past majors (US Open 2014, Aus Open 2015, French Open 2015) was battling for her 21st slam and 4th straight slam to complete the Serena Slam for the 2nd time in her career. Battling through a horrendous draw and the immense pressure of history, Serena proved once again why she is the GOAT, beating Watson and her home crowd in round 3, Venus in round 4, Azarenka in one of the best matches of 2015 in the Quarterfinal, Sharapova in the semifinal and rising star Muguruza in the final.

    The crowd in the Watson match was horrendous. It's fine to root for your young "hometown" player(even though they barely cheered for her in any other match she played at Wimbledon) but to boo Serena and scream "out" every time she hit a semi close ball was just pathetic. • @akeemmartin3056
      @akeemmartin3056 Před rokem +4

      @Carrera U that's impressive. We're there any gold medalist that she beat? We're there players in every round that have won a grand slam. Or ar least from the 4th round on like serena had to accomplish here? What players did she beat that wimbledon that had single grand slams or medals? And why is this important in relation to this tournament and video?

    • @akeemmartin3056
      @akeemmartin3056 Před rokem +4

      @Carrera U the 49 slams you mentioned. We're they split between the players she played all 7 rounds? I'm unfamiliar with that slam. How many players did those 49 slams that Steffi faced in 1988 belong to? By your response you seem to be here to argue in favor of Steffi Graf when she's not mentioned nor did anyone compare the too. I just said this was a tough one. I don't know how that leads you to talking about Steffi? What's your point?

    • @akeemmartin3056
      @akeemmartin3056 Před rokem +4

      @Carrera U its only you the only players Steffi had to beat that year that won a slam or major title or medal was 1. The final she played against Martina in wimbledon was the only grand slam champion she faced that tournament. Compared to 4 that Serena had to play.

    • @akeemmartin3056
      @akeemmartin3056 Před rokem +4

      @Carrera U ahhhh i thought you said 1988. I never seen that. Or the one in 89. Was it close and tough matches? whats your point in bringing this tournament up in relation to what i said? does it change the fact that in modern-day tennis, This is a tough draw? what's your point in commentting at all with something so unrelated? Does it make Serena's draw in 2015 easier because steffi played the last 2 rounds against players that retired that year or the next? What do steffi's a accomplishment have to do with what I said. Or are you just here to argue in favor of a player not mentioned in the video?(because she retires 16 years before the tournament) again I ask, what's your point or goal In engaging with me on stating this was a tough tournament?

    • @akeemmartin3056
      @akeemmartin3056 Před rokem +6

      @Carrera U that's was unnecessary and was a waste of your time. One, because that wasn't the tennis golden era.(bring that Navratilova and everrt was about to retire) i would say that was 2005 to now because of novak, rafa, roger and Serena. The sport has never been more popular. The wta wasnt even half as athelthic as it is now for pete's sake. Even Steffi, Navratilova, and evertt has said that tennis during serenas time was miles harder then the game they played. And two, I still don't understand why you're responding to my comment if your goal was to inform gen z about that time frame. Im not gen z. And I didnt say it was the hardest grand slam win ever. Just that it was a tough win.(don't know why that bothers you so?) The fact that it lead to this useless exchange is more indicative to your issues with Serena for you to 1
      Go on you tube. Watch a serena video then serach the comments to inform others that Steffi had hard slams too. Seems like theres some mental issues you might have. What ever Steffi did doesn't change my orginal statement one bit. Especially since Serena Grand Slam haul is more impressive then steffi's.(being that it includes multiple gold medals and doubles grand slam title as well as more grand slam titles). It makes it look like you're trying to bring down a black women for no reason and I feel you choose to talk to me because my picture is of a black man. You might need to grow up some before you inform any generation about anything. Especially when no one is saying anything about eras. But just giving a simple applause and acknowledgement of an achievement of Serena's. All your comments are useless here.

    That Serena Williams is one of the greatest tennis players and a cultural icon who has inspired so many female (and male) athletes, as well as people of color, is undeniable. She will be greatly missed, but...
    Serena Williams vs. Steffi Graf
    - by the numbers
    GRAND SLAM SINGLES TITLES/GRAND SLAMS PLAYED:
    Serena 23/81 (28%)
    Steffi 22/54 (40.7%)
    # of Seasons to Achieve Slam Total (Years Between 1st and Final Major Win):
    Serena 19
    Steffi 13
    SINGLES TITLES/TOURNAMENTS PLAYED:
    Serena 74/235 (31.5%)
    Steffi 107/223 (48%)
    WEEKS RANKED # 1:
    Serena 319 (3rd all-time)
    Steffi 377 (1st all-time)
    CAREER SINGLES RECORD:
    Serena 836-147 (85 %)
    Steffi 902-115 (88.7 %)
    RECORD vs. PLAYERS WHO HAVE BEEN RANKED IN THE TOP 10:
    Serena 427-177 (78%)
    Steffi 452-91 (83%)
    # of Seasons in which player ended season at #1:
    Serena 5 (retired at age 40)
    Steffi 8 (retired at age 30)
    Both have won Olympic gold
    Both have won the Grand Slam
    Graf is the only player to win EACH MAJOR four times or more. This possibly suggests that Graf had greater versatility across different surfaces.
    On the other hand, Serena has a far more impressive record in doubles.
    So, why is the greatest player of all time argument so incredibly one-sided in Serena's favor?
    Are fans and analysts prisoners of recency bias?
    Is it because one of the players is American and the other was a foreigner?
    Is it because Serena is an extremely public figure who has successfully branded herself in the internet age while Graf was a bit introverted and shy?
    One might argue that Steffi would have won fewer titles if Monica Seles had not been stabbed. However, I would also suggest that if Venus Williams had not suffered from Sjogren's Syndrome, a serious fatigue disorder, in the prime of her career, she would have taken a few of Serena's grand slams.
    There is absolutely no doubting the cultural significance of Serena Williams as an American icon and as an inspiration to all female athletes and people of color. She should obviously be considered as a leading candidate in the GOAT discussion; however, I am truly baffled that Graf is not even in the conversation when you look at the numbers.

    Serena had to FIGHT this tourney. What used to irritate me was when players like Heather Watson wouldn't put up a fight against players like Sharapova or Azarenka but would fight Serena tooth and nail just because it was Serena. All players did that crap. Heather was playing junk tennis just to throw her game off, and it looked a fool. I didn't like her at all after that b/c why play junk tennis?

    All her achievements will forever be undermined by her incredibly poor sportsmanship! Against Stosur, Clisters and Osaka at the US Open she spat the dummy each time she was losing. Her self entitled, rude and selfish behaviour towards her opponents will forever be a stain on her record. GOAT? No way! Graf and Court were better players and much more decent human beings. Serena is a disgrace. Venus on the other hand, is a lady and a great sport!

    Wow that was not an easy draw at all! I believe 3 of her opponents were #1s and won multiple grand slams. Simply phenomenal! 🖤🤎💜🤍💚💜
