      I owned a 7.3 powerstroke and that is hard to believe anything below 10°f it wasn't starting with out a fight unless it was plugged in my 12v fires right up no issues

      They use a grid heater for the wait to start but when you plug it in it’s a block heater, goes into the coolant by the oil cooler

      Cummins start exceptional in cold weather unless you have big injectors. Most Cummins don’t even have a plug to plug in a heater. It must be ordered n installed separate.

      You only use Diesel 911 when youre already gelled up. Use the white bottle Power Service to prevent gelling.

    For all the people saying the mods done to this are the reason why it won't start. It says it's a sled puller in the description so it most likely has summer diesel in it, which is more in likely gelled up.

    Reminds me of a 335 I had, thirty some years ago. Advanced the fuel pump timing ten degrees, added a #9 button to the pump, along with a 260 spring. Truck would run with the new NTC 350 all day. It would sit there like yours does, and blow smoke rings for an hour.

    My 99 24 valve has 150,000 on her and after one cycle of the glow plugs below freezing she fires up without a puff of smoke. Bone stock and pulls 12,000 lbs like it's nothing without all that smoke belching on other folks. 17 mpg loaded, 21 mpg empty. Wish like hell they would bring the 5.9 back into production.

      I know what I have, that's why I'm still driving a 24 yr old truck. As far as what it's worth I've turned down $12,000 and $14,000 offers. I couldn't replace it for that with anything even close to as reliable and efficient. Won't be selling anytime soon to say the least

      Yep, run many many many of them in the logging woods. They keep going and going. I've run skidders with so many hours that they needed a gallon and a half of oil every single day. They still pulled logs though.

    my '01 cummins never has an issue with cold starts, sure it doesn't fire on the first key turn. However, after following the cold start instructions on the visor but depressing the throttle down to about the 1,000-1,200rpm area and turning the key. it starts up like a champ. also block heaters are an amazing thing in diesels. btw i like in houghton, coldest start i've done was in -25 degree weather.

      Red top Optimas, a 6.4 starter and cycle the glow plugs twice and my 6.0 fires right up. I've had it -9 and fired it up.

      @@jonburbridge2968 Same here I dont even plug my 6.0 powerstroke in and rarely drive it in the winter and its only once not started and that was because the batteries froze because it was so cold out. I had to get two new batteries, and as soon as I put the two new batteries in it she fired right up she didn't like it but it started way better than any Cummins that's for sure. Cummins are the worst cold starting diesels out there and this video proves it once again

This isn't your normal every day Cummins when these things get a lot of cam work done and a high timing pump they don't want to start cold or not cold. Any diesel when taken this far will do the same thing. Either way guys all this stuff looks real funny keep it up!

      Hi Michael I was just watching the video and reading the replies to. There is a whole pile of guys here commenting know F@#k all about tuning for truck and tractor pullers. With how they start and run even in the summer on a hot day, until they warm up a bit. With cam work, compression lowered a wicked timing setting , and a good chunk of over fueling flooding it out a bit. I'm impressed it even started in the winter without a circulating block heater and half a can of ether like some pullers need to get them going for a run !.

    Here in Brazil in the winter (only in the southern region) we use 2% of kerosene in the fuel tank, greatly improves the cold start.

      Back before we had to start using low sulfur and then ultra low sulfur diesel here in the states we would blend our fuel up to 50/50 #2 diesel and kerosene (which is actually equivalent to #1 diesel) depending on how cold the temperatures were dropping

    Wow.... Definitely keeps me from wanting to modify my Cummins. I am bone stock except Airdog 100 and K&N cold air on my 2001 24 valve and as long as I don't have a fuel gel problem it will fire up no problem no matter how cold the temp. I live in Denver so we do see negative temperature quite often during the winter months.

      Michael Gillette lmfao grid heater is cycle key, Everytime you cycle it till the wait to start light turns off, it warms up, and gets hotter more times you do it. I bet if he cycled the key a few times in a row, would of started no problem

      AntiqueFarmImplement Oh no, as long as you aren't running glow plugs and trying to crank it for a minute and a half it ain't nothing. Like I know with the old M1008/9 CUCV's you can't get them to start without cranking the engine for less than that, and usually after a couple tries.

    I love cold start videos but I've had like 4 of these trucks over the years and I have noticed that no one ever seems to pump the gas pedal, I live in Northern PA and by bumping the gas my trucks always fired right up, then I just kept it at 1,000 rpms for a minute and they are fine lol love the video

    its usually the trucks thats had mods like tuners and exhausts that are the most difficult to cold start. Its best to leave em stock, and take care of them.

    In the Winter of 2007/2008 in Silverton, CO my 2006 dodge ram 2500 5.9 cummins started in -25 F. Wasn't plugged in. I've cold started it in -20 temps every Winter since then. (bone stock minus 8" lift with 37's ;))Let the intake heater warm the air before starting.

    Use a micro lube that soaks into metal like zmax in the winter months this helps tremendously with colds starting and saves the motor against cold start wear and tear.

    what i find sad is this video says 5 below, in canada that -20, we start are trucks at -41.3*C now thats cold, (thats the same in F*)

      I work in a warehouse where a lot of delivery vans still use the 7.3 Powerstroke even the 7.3 idi. Unfortunately quite a few of these engines are too dependent on ether.
      All the 6.0s and definitely 6.4s are all gone. The DT466s are still running around and startup fine no matter what. Some guys are still running old school 6bts. Can't beat an old Cummins or International.

    I love how he has smoke stacks and a tool box in there making part of the bed a tad bit useless, what I do is stick a tool bag behind the seats and have a normal exhaust making my truck more practical.

    I have a 6.7 in a 3500 07.. It started at -17 without letting the heater heat.. It stumbled a little but smoothed out very quickly..

    I remember my 24V starting hard like that one winter. Bad intake heater, and didn't plug her in, and it got colder than five below. Pretty sure the neighbors were pissed, considering all the smoke. Lol

      Newer, not beat on clapped out junknstart just fine in the cold, even without a block heater. Never had a problem with the Duramax in the cold, it gets to 0 and colder for about month too. And lake effect snow, lots of it.

    New gride heater and a cord will help this thing start a hell of a lot easier mine dont even start that hard in the cold but i put a new gride heater in and keep it plugged in less im on a job site thin the new gride heater helps alot

      A diesel should NOT have a problem starting at any temperature.
      Santa sure as hell wouldn't want that problem!!!

      +Ken Doe Truck has crazy advanced timing and lowered compression thats why its super hard to start. My stock 12v always starts.
      No one cares about your school bus engine
